checked at closest Bunning, the tagged price for a Ryobi 18V ONE+ 4.0Ah Starter Kit was $145 but nothing left. I had it ordered online and going to pick up from the nearby store.

I have that kit, it's pretty damn decent. Packs more punch than my 18V Bosch cordless.
Annoying bit is that it doesn't come with any form of storage pouch or box. Also, the battery doesn't have charge state LEDs.

i was looking at moving to Ryobi and found the best bang for buck tool to get is the leaf blower as it comes with 5.0Ah battery and charger, pretty much you're getting the blower for 50 bucks

Yes it's an everyday price - but it's a new product that only entered the market in the last couple of weeks.
You can get copies on Ebay for less than half the Ryobi branded ones.
Yep I'll second that I got a 5Ah one for less then $50 delivered and it works great !
Are the cells good? Would not be the first time a Chinese battery severely overstated the AHr.
My aftermarket brand battery lasted good for a year, now it randomly goes from 4 bars to dead after 20 seconds on the tools. I don't have the same issue with my genuine one… ymmv

I had a genuine one die on me after about a year. Had only charged it about 5-6 times.
Should be covered by statutory warranty at worst. Just walk in store and get a replacement.
I'm now up to 4x dead 5.0Ah genuine Ryobi batteries. Minimal use, always charged on genuine chargers. 2x 2015 and 2x 2017.
If they're only going to last (potentially) 3 years then not sure they're a good investment. I've got other batteries from other brands that have never failed like this (I also have Bosch 18V tools).
Remarkable - I've got 2 x 2ah and 1 x 4ah genuine Ryobi. Had them for 5+ years. the 4ah has been charged at least 400 times and still going OK. The 2ah now doesn't last too long on the circular saw. Probably never did as it's a pretty heavy load. So I use the small ones for drill and impact driver use. I never used them straight from the charger as my understanding is that using a hot battery straight from charging will kill it.
@freesteakknives: Yep. I have 2x 4ah and 2x2ah batteries and have had them since 2013/14. They have been bashed around so much almost nothing is still readable on them and i have charged them hundreds of times and they still work perfectly fine.
Ryobi ones generally won't last long if you let them sit on the charger while the charger is always on. If you let your batteries sit on there, turn the charger off at the wall after fully charged. Apparently this is what Bunnings have been told from Ryobi reps as tips for saving the life of Ryobi batteries.

@serpserpserp: Yeah I've always followed good charging practice. Never charge when hot, never use when just finished charging. I have a 6 port super charger than all my batteries are stored in and they're on a timer which runs the charger every Friday night from 6pm to 6am next day. This means my batteries are good to go every weekend - if they're half used from the weekend before, they get topped up. If they're already charged the charger just skips over them anyway.
For lithium batteries, the storage life depends on the state of charge. If you store lithium batteries flat, they won’t last long regardless of brand.
I've watched a bunch of Youtube videos that compare the fake ones and real ones. The general takeaway is that the fake ones are crap, especially when put in a high-powered tools.
If you are keen, the best thing to do would be to find/buy an old pack and replace the 18650 cells.

Still too expensive. Like others here, I only have Ryobi because of cheap kits in the past days of Masters price-matching.

I guess time will tell whether it is a false economy. I've bought 3 cheapies in the last few months. I got a 4.0 AH one for $34 delivered. I figured that for around a third of the price of Ryobi It was worth the chance. The seller had a high rating and they are "guaranteed" for what that is worth.
Does he have 36V ones? I want to try a cheapie one and see how it goes.

I had a 2Ah from the line trimmer kit fail. Took it in to Bunnings, they confirmed it was dead but said because it came from a kit, I would need to replace the full kit if I wanted to keep warranty on the new battery…couldn't be bothered with that so they replaced it with a 2.5Ah and no warranty. Anyone else experience that or just me?
On another note, I've got generic batteries for my DeWalt tools and they've been going strong for probably 7-8 years.

Bought one of these last week - I don't need any starter pack which includes a drill driver (already have a Makita 18v drill driver), so this was a great way to enter into the One+ ecosystem.
You are probably better off buying a kit that includes a tool or 2.
But if you want just the battery and charger, this seems okay.
