I was just referred to a branch for ID check. Seriously this bank are backwards

  • I am not sure if this has been asked. I have some transactions done at Coles, Coles Express and some other small shops didn't earn me cashback. I emailed HSBC and it took them a few days to reply me. They just told me these transactions were not eligible. Well, I just tap and pay at Coles, Coles Express, etc. Did this happen to anyone else? Transactions I did at Bunnings were fine.

      Were they under $100?

      • Yes they were all under $100. And quite a few transactions with a few of them around $98. And my cashback hasn't reached the cap yet. Now they told me that they were not eligible. I asked Coles how does VISA Paywave work and was told just tap and pay. So I am confused.

I am curious if anyone else in the same boat? Or have I done it incorrectly? Transactions at Bunnkngs all worked.

        • I had the same problem in late October 2020. I spent under $10 at an Asian supermarket using tap n go but didn’t get any cashback, I contacted HSBC and they said my transaction was not eligible because I didn’t use tap n go. I replied back saying I did use tap n go and asked them to do further investigation. So it took them more than a month to contact me again and gave me back the cashback. Also, I noticed that if the transaction description doesn’t have the code ATMA896 it wouldn’t have cashback. Please check your transaction description.

          • @fkwong: Ok thanks. I didn't pay attention to what was the description of transactions. I have done hundreds of dollars (total) at Coles, Coles Express, etc. I want to find out too.

            • @apple0604: I suggest you should contact HSBC again if you are sure you used tap n go and spent under $100.

              • @fkwong: Yes, I am absolutely sure I used tap n go. I will contact them again. I am just a bit fed up with them at the moment.

          • @fkwong: I just checked that there is no code ATMA896 in the descriptions of those transactions which missing cashback. So this must be the reason. But I only ever used tap and go.

            • @apple0604: Definitely something wrong with HSBC system.

              • @fkwong: I believe so. I got upset about their attitude. Wouldn't want to listen to me.

                • @apple0604: I felt the same. But we followed the rules, so they should fix their problems not just blaming the customers.

@fkwong: I've been having the same issue with Coles, Officeworks and BP so I've been studying my transactions that haven't been getting the cashback and have noticed a pattern. The transactions that say VISA do get cashback while the transactions that say EFTPOS do not get the cashback. This seems to imply that only transactions processed through the VISA network get cashback ('Credit' instead of 'Savings'). You will also notice the payment terminal saying this after you tap your card.

After some more digging it seems that only recently within the last year that Eftpos introduced their own tap and pay implementation which means transactions won't always use the Visa network for tap payments anymore depending on the merchant. And surprise surprise, Coles has switched to using Eftpos by default now: https://mozo.com.au/debit-cards/articles/shop-at-coles-you-c…

We will probably see more and more merchants switching to Eftpos for tap transactions as they have lower processing fees than Visa/MC which means this can only get worse for us. Whether HSBC are aware of this or not I have no idea.

            More info here: https://www.rba.gov.au/payments-and-infrastructure/debit-car…

            • @wangasm: Thanks for sharing your finding. You are right this would be bad for us if more merchants switch to Eftpos network. Would you consider reporting your finding to HSBC and hoping they would do something about it?

              • @fkwong: I have sent them a message through my online portal, will update when I get a response.

                • @wangasm: Noted. Thanks again.

                  • @fkwong: Yeh like apple0604 I just got a generic reply to make sure I'm using Visa paywave and to check the exclusions. Not much else can be done it seems.

                    • @wangasm: Never mind, not much we can do. But they really should let people know. After all we don't have control over merchants changing their payment processing system.

              • @fkwong: I am sure HSBC is fully aware of what Coles has done judging by the email replies I have received. They advised me to make sure Coles using the VISA Paywave when processing payment. How can customers have a say in that? This is not something we can decide or choose.

The only way I can be sure (now and probably subject to change) is to use Google Pay or Apple Pay. But I much prefer to use my own card. So I have stopped using my HSBC card.

In the mean time, HSBC shall honor the cashback as we did Tap n Pay unless they explicitly make clear about some merchants switched to eftpos payment method. But this is only my opinion.

                • @apple0604: This is your solution. use Apple/Google pay. I have only ever used my phone for tap and go purchases and have never had an issue with cashback anywhere usually shopped.

                  • @txb: Yes, I figured it out too. But right now I have quite a few gift cards purchased last Dec, Zip 10% offer. So I have stopped using my HSBC card.

            • @wangasm: Maybe try using apple/google pay as they use Visa/Master network by default

              • @chanhoz: Yeh I tried Google Pay just before and got the cashback so it's a good workaround for now. I do prefer using my physical card but I can live with this.

  • is a lotto purchase in store not part of an eligible transaction?

    • They should be, but as discussed above some stores are forcing tap payments through Eftpos (instead of Visa) which do not give cashback.
In your transaction details does it say Eftpos or Visa?

      • it says

4053 VISA AUD LOTTO AND CO540361
        AUA88850420ATM

has it been processed as a visa card?

I was assuming that maybe gambling transactions arent counted

        • +1

Yep that is a Visa purchase, but you are right this might be classed as a Gambling transaction which is on the exclusion list.

          • @wangasm: thanks for that, not really a big as it was like 20c
but good to know for future!

  • Sorry probably a dumb question but is cashback eligible if I use apple pay or google pay for online stores?

  • Anyone knows if thr debit card works on Samsung pay?
