zhenjie's RM Williams FAQs:

Q: Can I trust Blowes Clothing
A: Yes, they've been an official RM William stockist for decades. Their service and shipping are head and shoulders above Nungar (another popular retailer who sells RM Williams cheap year-round).

Q: What's the difference between the Dynamic Flex Craftsman vs the Classic and Comfort models?
A: The Dynamic flex has a combination leather/rubber sole and a very supportive removable insole. You can use orthotics in these boots if you have them. The Classic Craftsman has a leather outsole and insole. The Comfort Craftsman as a rubber outsole and fixed 'comfort' insole.

For me personally, the Dynamic Flex is the most supportive and comfortable Craftsman around.

Q: What colour should I get?
A: The Chestnut Yearling is the recommended colour for your first RM Williams Craftsman boot. It offers the best versatility in most people wardrobe; you can dress it up or down. Ultimately the choice will come down to your aesthetic.

Q: What size am I?
A: RM Williams is in AU sizes, similar to UK Sizing. Usually 1 full size down from US sizing/Brannock sizing. It's best to get fitted instore if you can, as a whole cut Chelsea boot will bit differently to normal shoes and boots. It takes into a lot of variables like your instep, shape & width of the foot, etc.

The F width is standard, similar to a D width US shoe. The H width is wider, similar to a US size E/EE width.

Q: OMG, why would I pay this much money for boots when I can get $50 ones from Rivers
A: It's all about the long term investment. RM William boots are Goodyear welt constructed, allowing you to resole and recrafts the boots when required. The Dynamic Flex soles should last a few years of decent year, mine is 3 years and still going strong, due for a resole next year ($160, cheaper if you use 3rd party cobblers). There are many examples of people wearing RM Williams even after 50 years.

RM William boots also hold their value, unlike other brands. Second-hand pairs can sell for $150-$400 depending on their condition.

Q: Are RM Williams boots truly Australian?
A: Yes, the Craftsmen line is made in South Australia. The RM Williams brand has recently transferred back to Australian ownership, under Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest's investment company.

Q: Older RM Williams were built better back in the good ole days!
A: Perhaps, but the current Craftsman boots still represent excellent value, quality and materials, especially at this price.

Q: What makes this such a good deal?
A: The lowest you'll usually get RM William's Craftsman Boots for is $445 + shipping from Nungar Trading Co. Nungar is known for their poor service and long wait times. RM William Factory Seconds retail for $450 at their outlets, and usually have defects and issues. The Colour, Size and width selection available make this a very good sale (the best I've seen in decades).

Q: Where can I find out more about RM Williams and good quality boots/shoes?
A: The RM Williams Appreciation Group
Welted Shoes Australia Group on Facebook
Reddit /goodyearwelt for those going down the rabbit hole of quality footyear.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2020

Good price, I picked up a pair of comfort craftsmen recently but tried the dynamic. It feels strange, so definitely try it on in store before buying.

    • Might get better after wearing it in.

  • Dang! Been wanting a pair for ages but haven't had time to go try them on for sizing!
    This seems really well priced!

    • -1

You could buy a few pairs and resell it on the market. $400-$450 for new unworn is not an uncommon price on FB Market and Gumtree.

    • +2

I followed sizing instructions from the RM Williams website using a piece of paper, pen and a tape measure. Worked out well. Measure twice, buy once. If in doubt about sizing (because you're on the border of sizes with you foot measurement), you can always go one size up and wear thicker socks and make it your winter boot. A pair of these make excellent winter/damp weather shoes compared to everything else I own. Also great for summer. For me, I literally wear these or a pair of thongs all ready round. Also Blowes are excellent with service, I'd even give them a call.

FAQ is well written, have an upvote from me on that alone

Thank you. I enjoying blogging/writing about Australian menswear - even better when you can save that $$$ and support Australian companies.

  • +1

Can you return and get refund if you are ebay plus member? Don't know if the size is suitable.

    • I have plus, but it looks like this seller is buyer pays return postage.

      • Oh right, thanks! Damn, I pulled the trigger already. I hope it fits for me…

        • +3

My foot is 26cm long and I wear 7.5G
IMO shoe companies should just switch to cm sizing. So much more accurate.

          • @do-ob: I just measured and I am like 25-25.5 cm….I ordered 7. I guess it's safer to go slightly bigger like 7.5 than not fit in, right?

            • +1

@lyoo01: One of the advantages of the Dynamic Flex is you can swap out insoles for another to fill out the volume if you did purchase too large.

However, it's better to get the right fit if you intend to wear these for years to come.

              • @zhenjie: Thank you for your reply! Yes, I heard about that too. I think it would be safer to get a slightly larger size as I can swap out the insole. :) Thank you!

    i want comfort craftsman :(
i dont want to settle for a pair of dynamic flex :(

    • +2

Nungar trading company always sell them at a good price

      • That's if you can get them to respond to you, ended up cancelling an order with them and going elsewhere.

    • +2

I have both. Prefer dynamic flex. Should try both on in stores and see which you like better.

      • I tried all 3 of them and comfort craftsman is amazing. dynamic flex is great for senior citizens because you can put your orthopedic cushion in there, but I don't like the one it comes with. I prefer not to pay full price for the comfort craftsman, but that's the one I really really want.

    • +2

The Dynamic is not an inferior model, but I dare say it will be more supportive to most people.

The Comfort Craftsmans according to RM William reps is still the most popular model - but it's been available for a lot longer than the Dynamic Flex.

      • -1

I never said it was inferior, I just don't prefer it. if I am going to buy one, I want it to be the one I want, or else I will be settling for something else only because of the cheaper price. I love the price, but not the fit of the dynamic flex. the comfort craftsman feels amazing when I tried them on, that's the one I really really want.

    • +2

      Buy comfort craftsman then.

      • and/or a SA Cricket Ground membership?

        • Mike Cannon-Brookes will prolly give you a free Atlassian/Jira account if your desperate!

  • +3

i have both craftsman and dynaflex…wouldn't call the dynaflex "settling".

    both are comfortable.

  • In case you can't select a size in stock, looks like they're open to orders:

"During the eBay Coupon Sale, if we sell out of your size please choose the N/S option and message us the size you need.
We have more sizes arriving over the next two weeks and will be able fulfill orders as they arrive."

  • Is it worth it?

    • +1

If you want quality footwear that lasts for decades, yes.

Also, it depends on what you want and are willing to pay.

      • buy it 2nd hand?

        • +4

At this price, you may as well buy new.

The downside of buying second hand is the footbed has already shaped to the previous owner's foot, this is more prevalent in the Classic craftsman which has the leather sole. The dynamic flex has a leather/rubber sole so it's less affected by this.

I have a few second hand RM Williams but I got them for a good price and budged a resole/relast for them.

          • -1

@zhenjie: That's good mate, I don't mind as long it is comfortable, currently wearing $50 shoes, can't imagine how much of difference it is.

            • @Yaren24: Honestly just wear them and they'll speak for themselves.
I've had mine for a year now and they're by far the most comfortable and hard wearing shoe i've ever had.
Do yourself a favour and get a pair. Far better than chucking out $100-$200 shoes every 1-2 years.

        • -1

ewww, I would never buy 2nd hand shoes. that's like using 2nd hand unwashed underwear, lol.

  • Made in Adelaide?

    • +3

Yep, all Craftsman models are made in Adelaide, SA.

  • +5

absolutely…better than my previous pairs of aquilas, hush puppies, etc…

so comfy started wearing them casually to supermarkets over sport/casual shoes (nike, adidas, etc) (probably not a good idea), but goes to show the level of comfort

    • +2

Agreed, same! Have become my go-to as well… starting to wear them more often than trainers!

  • Is it finally time to get eBay Plus and use that $50 voucher?

    • What are you waiting for? :-D

  • +4

It’s hard to find sub $400 prices for the classic designs/colours, so this is a good find OP! Signed up to EBay Plus just for this

    • +2

Have found sub $400 before, but not sub $395! So agree, great find OP

      • +5

And rarely available in the core colours, sizes and widths.

  • If only I knew my size damn

    • Head into one of their stores, they're more than happy to size you up even if you dont by directly from them as at the end of the day they're still getting the sale

      • I would but I have none near by and the deal seems to expire today,

Owell I'll prepare my self for next time

      • Didn't have time to go to a store, so I just used their size guide and hopefully my measurements are within!

        • i had to go ~1 size down according to the RM williams sizer (from my running shoe size of 10.5), when i got them i swore they were too small, wore them for about a month and they stretched about .5-1 size.

would rather go a little bit too small than too big. The yearling leather has a fair bit of give

          • @Drakesy: Thanks for the info, will head into a store sometimes this week and see.

  • +2

Damn expensive trip to OZB. I just rage quit OZB. :P

  • Got these from the last ebay plus sale. Blowes Clothing were great, they didn't have my size in stock but let me order and sent me my pair when they were ready. Was still under week from order to delivery.

  • Plus shopback app $5 and 2% cashback.

    • Excludes Coupons?

  • For some reason the code is not working for me. I do have ebay plus.
“This code can’t be applied to your order.”

  • ive seen girls wear it lol freaky

  • Decided to pull the trigger. Got two parties this weekend, so hopefully I can show them off!

Even decided to sign up for Ebay Plus just for this.

  • I cant seem to select F (or H) for the width, am I missing something?

    • +1

If your size is OOS, select N/S and you can tell Blowes what size you're after later.

  • Do the narrow width ever go on sale? I wear Comfort Craftsmen 10.5 in narrow, definitely couldn't go the regular but keen to check out the Dynamics.

    • +1

Not often because they are rarely stocked outside RM Williams stores, and even in most RM stores they are MTO (Made to Order).

  • Absolute steal! Great find OP

  • Would these last more than 4 pairs of hush puppies? I still can't justify the price. A pair of hush puppies is around $60-$80 and last about 2 years for me.

    • +2

They're marketed as shoes for life (provided you take care of them)… it's just a matter of getting them re-soled

    • +1

They probably will, but it's not just cost per wear (which is very competitive in the long term). You need to factor in the comfort and quality you get with each wear.

This is subjective, but they also look a hell of a lot sharper than Hush Puppies. They polish up and condition better than Hush Puppie leathers too, so you have boots they will last longer, and look better doing so too.

    • +1

They'll last 20 years if you're good, plus they're made to be resoled so long term wise well worth it.
Plus they're by far the most comfortable shoes you'll ever wear.

      • +4

For reference, my first pair were purchased 12 years ago (for $399…and I thought that was expensive!) and they were my daily wear at work for the next 8 years until I got a second pair, when I started alternating them. Last year I had them resoled for $135 when there was 15% off repair work, and that was only because I was in a RMW shop getting some cushion inserts when the shop assistant noticed I'd worn the soles down past the stitching. Even though they weren't floppy or leaking she advised that I get them done since it was cheaper at the time and they'd need it soon anyway. It took only a couple of weeks to get them back; they even re-coloured the uppers and tightened up the elastic a bit where some stitching had started to get loose, all at no extra charge. It was like getting a new pair of boots that already fitted my feet perfectly! A bit stiff at first because of the new (and now thicker) sole, but otherwise the same pair I'd been moulding to my feet for more than a decade. Definitely 'shoes for life'.

        • Thanks for the feedback everyone. I missed out but will buy a pair next time.

  • I wonder if this price drop is partly because LV sold them out to Twiggy..

    • +2

It is quite possibly the best move keeping the brand in Australia.

  • certain sizes are sold out now! was a steal that price and i was contemplating between this and Bared shoes, but in vain to get these.

    • +1

"During the eBay Coupon Sale, if we sell out of your size please choose the N/S option and message us the size you need.

We have more sizes arriving over the next two weeks and will be able fulfill orders as they arrive."

  • -4

Looks expired — showing as $520 to me.

    • +4

      Follow the simple instruction.

      • -1

"Unfortunately, this code no longer works. Please continue with your order." Maybe it's because I'm not signed up for Plus yet, but that's not what the error is saying. Is it still working if you have Plus signed up?

  • +1

That's an amazing price, thought I got mine for cheap. I like the dynamic flex sole, felt weird at first but actually pretty thankful for the bit of extra support and grip compared to the craftsman, been wearing mine 6 days/week for the past year. I suggest trying instore first for sizing.

  • Ordered N/S, going to store later to try the size before asking the seller to ship

  • +3

too late. was just trying to checkout and the code expired…. not meant to be!
