$300 cheaper for the same specs

    • +1

They are not the exact same spec, even though both are RTX2060, Helios is rated for 80W (https://www.ultrabookreview.com/27055-acer-predator-helios-3…) while the omen is rated for 100W (See review video)

The screen is also better on the Omen and just overall a better build and design, especially if you don't want the gaming look of the Helios

90W actually. It's pretty much the same performance, the extra 10W doesn't make much difference especially when the CPU on the Acer is probably going to hit higher clocks. Either way no one is going to notice the difference between 94fps and 90fps. Hardly worth paying $300 for.

The screen is also pretty much the same specs, 300 nits 72%NTSC 144hz panels, any differences you could try nitpick comparing different reviews will be down to panel lottery.

The design is different not better. The Helios 300 also has a metal build.

The helios has a 4 zone RGB keyboard vs 1 zone red backlit keyboard on this Omen.

        • 90W is when you overlock Helios to 1725MHz , in that case the Omen goes up to 110W (https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/i4ogq8/testi…)

When I said built and design its not limited to the exterior, the thermals/heat pipes/internal looks to be better designed and also has a larger battery.

Again, the RGB keyboard might not to be a good thing when you don't want a laptop that shouts GAMERS. I know you can turn it off but what the point of it then.

          • @denischto: Like I said, If you think 94 fps vs 90fps, and a less gamery laptop is worth $300, that's fine.

Nether will really have good battery life, a Ryzen laptop would be the way to go for that.

BTW, the RGB keyboard can be set to something simple like an all white backlight, whereas the HP is stuck with red, the HP is definetly more gamery in that regard.

            • @[Deactivated]: To me the thunderbolt 3, thermal and overlock headroom, SD card and a cleaner aesthetics is worth 300.

Also the Omen comes with dual channel memory and the helios is one stick of 16.

Also at 1080 I am pretty sure it is not just 4 fps difference.

Also I don't see your point in bringing up amd laptops having better battery life when we are comparing this 2 in particular. Unless you can find and AMD laptop deal with 2060.

I saw this and was trying to figure out whether I go this one or pay the little bit extra and go the Asus ROG strix with a 2070

Or the other alternative of saving a few bucks and going the Asus tuf with a 1660ti

    • You would get like 10~15% better performance from the 2070 since its 115W. (https://www.newegg.com/rog-strix-g15-black-asus-g512lw-es76-…)
Screen and thermals look good too (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-Strix-G15-G512LW-Lapt…)

Only trade off I would say is the build and material.

Cant say for a ROG but I have a friend having the Omen (2060 also if I'm not mistaken) and he said it's too hot and throttle a lot

      • Thermals was like the biggest improvement this generation in the Omens, does he have the last gen model?

        • -1

Dont think so. I think it was a 9xxx, the one is this deal has a 10xxx chip so maybe there is some changes !

          • @twain90: Intel 9 gen is the last gen Omen, the one that has the gamer look to it.
This is a completely new design and thermals was their main improvement after having suffered poor thermals for years.

FYI - HP has a practice of whitelisting their WiFi/ bluetooth cards - so you can't upgrade unless it's a HP one.
Not sure if they still do this or if there are other components that are whitelisted or if it's all HP laptops/computers.

Ray tracing in a laptop? Didn't know that was a thing (without going some huge behemoth!)

    • +1

It's just Nvidia's RTX GPU series technology. Any laptop with an RTX gpu has ray tracing (im pretttyyyy sure….)
