This is a great player for Dolby Vision support which is lacking on the Blu-ray drives of the next gen consoles. Recently posted on ozbargain for $279 and this is cheaper again!

Does anyone actually buy Blu-ray these days when most stuff can be streamed?
I still buy them for live music concerts. Most movies aren't good enough to warrant purchase.
I do only if its for the collection eg fast and furious, avangers etc
Yeah I do when JB has 20% off 4k movies, most stuff you stream is very compressed and low bit rate sound

4K discs provide the absolute best audio and visual quality. Streaming does not.
They're pretty good if you have a giant 4K TV. Streaming quality is bad and only getting worse e.g. Netflix is lowering their quality again. I watched a Netflix movie and was suprised how poor it looked on my (not giant) 4K TV.
I do ๐ฌ
Sigh, . . the usual "…does anyone still watch/buy physical media…"
While it may be a serious question for some, the following explanations are why most people still do prefer physical media:Five Benefits of Owning Movies on Physical Media

edit: thanks to rougewolf and his deal today.
Can I play US / AU Blu Rays on this .. and freely switch between the two?
UHD 4K Blu-ray is region free.
For the older 1080p Blu-rayโs you need to get the hardware modded to switch between regions I believe.Currently I have an old player that was region free DVD and for Blu-Ray I could switch it - that I think could only be changed 10 times then it locked.. I have left it to US, I also have a combo HDR/Blu Ray player that I then left alone as AUS so I could play everything. Now I have a 4K TV I'm keen to get a single device for disc playback if at all possible - ran out of HDMI ports awhile ago and power board sockets are looking way too full too to keep everything around or connected at least (never used the HDR really).
Sigh, they don't make it easy to be a legit media collector.

Might be worth it to consolidate your players to a single device
Almost every player just needs to have a code put in to make it region free. Basically like a cheat code done from the remote. Many sites which have the list of models and codes to input.
is this REgion A playable?
Great price. Paid way more :)
thanks op.
Better to buy this rather than a shield for streaming?
I see it has a USB port and streaming apps (is prime there?)Ethernet port too for streaming off my NAS
Upscaling tooNo Prime. Has fewer apps compared to their older Blu-ray players. Can take a pic later if want, but from memory there's Netflix, YouTube, ABC iView, SBS On Demand, Mubi, Berlin Philharmonic and a couple others. Local streaming is basic DLNA, with no subtitle support.
Other question is long term support - the apps aren't going to be maintained indefinitely. Suspect the Shield will be the better bet in that respect, but who knows.
thanks buddy, shield it is :)
bring on the black friday sales
Not a bad price! Probably due an upgrade.
Seems weird it doesn't support HDR10+. I don't currently have a use for that, but it reduces its future proofiness for sure.
It has Dolby Vision, which is a competing standard. Most devices support one or the other, but not both. I have an LG tv, and therefore no use for HDR10+.
Will this play back ATMOS and DTSX tracks via usb connection?
Can you play mkv files through an external hardrive hookup?
Apparently it does do mkv via usb but cannot do ATMOS via mkv
