they're flat fours or flat sixes
i dont think subaru have ever made a V6 or V8….
the point is that flat fours have a shape where the heads are close to the wheel wells/fenders so they are harder to work on and have higher parts count
coupled with mandatory 4wd then you get much higher maintenance costs than a comparative inline fwd four but hey, get rid of the car at the 5yr mark when the warranty goes
