[NSW] Free Entry to Australian Museum (Sydney)

2590

After a year of renovation, we’re thrilled to announce that on 28 November we will welcome visitors, members, volunteers and friends back to a transformed and free Australian Museum.

General admission will be free!
To celebrate our reopening, general admission to the Australian Museum will be free for adults and children for a limited time.

General admission includes entry to all permanent exhibitions as well as Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year.

General admission is not timed and visitor calculations have been made for each area of the Australian Museum, meeting the 4 sqm regulations. COVID-19 marshals will ensure limits are not exceeded in gallery and exhibition spaces.

Entry to our major exhibition Tyrannosaurs - Meet the Family requires a paid timed-entry ticket, and capacity is limited.

Took me a while to find that this is the Sydney Museum

    • +2

This is the Australian Museum, Sydney Museum is on Bridge Street.

  • +11

    How much is it normally?

    • +5

Based on a quick Google Search:

$15 for Adult, Free for children under 15.

    • +3

No idea who downvotes genuine questions… +1

Any idea for student fees as well @RichardL ?

      • +19

usually people downvote whnn they see jv and skip to next section. If they bother to read what he said, they will downvote and skip to next section.

        • Based on a quick Google Search:

$15 for Adult, Free for children under 15.

or the other reason could be that if RichardL can find it with a quick Google search, so can jv. It would take same amount of time as it took to post that comment.

@Pricebeat: Actually JV asked OP for this and as per post rules, OP should have posted it in first place. JV don't want to go to Museum thinking Free Entry is a bargain and later realising that it was free all year long. Its not the Museum which matters, its the free entry.

              @ChipsChicky:

JV don't want to go to Museum thinking Free Entry is a bargain and later realising that it was free all year long.

Is that why we have instructions on shampoo bottles?

JV don't want to go to Museum thinking Free Entry is a bargain

Guess jv doesn’t like bargains lol

              • @Pricebeat: lolz … maybe jv is more cautious than shampoo companies … jv believes in its better to be late than never.

                • +3

@ChipsChicky: Dont think its a bad idea to publicly ask. In fact, it saves other people to trouble to search themselves. JV saved me the trouble to search. Probably saved a large portion of 1790 clicks from searching…

                  • @Koipanda: ya totally agreed … indeed i upvoted him first time … i never thought i would do that one day.

        • +1

Woah… JV has seriously commented 73444 times, that's crazy

      • +3

because its lazy. instead of Googling and offering an answer he expects someone else to to it.

        • +2

Shouldn’t the normal price be in the OP?

        • That page literally opens to the information he has asked.

  • Free entry still ticketed? I can't imagine an unticketed event during these times.

    • How to get the ticket ?

    • +1

Ticketed entry for Tyrannosaurs exhibition. General admission is free and includes entry to all permanent exhibitions as well as Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year.

      • as well as Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year.

Careful you don't accidentally go to the "Australian Geographic Naturist Photographer of the Year", if you are attending with your kids…

  • +1

but can you just walk in for general admission or you still need to register to get a ticket first?

    • -3

      yes

  • is there a way to put a reminder?

    • +5

      Hey Siri/Google/Alexa, "Set a reminder…"

      • Genius.

    • +3

click the reminder link and click "On the Start date" or set a custom one. https://i.imgur.com/eAu40C9.png

      • Thank you, i didnt see it on the page earlier

      • Been using Oz for years and never even knew about this. Thank you.

  • +9

Last time it was free there was a long line, if you value your weekend time with your family, it would actually be a bargain to pay for entry to avoid the queue.

    • +5

This. Also I'm not sure if it is a good idea that we still have some local COVID cases.

      • +3

        !!! SUPER SPREADER EVENT !!!

    • Very true, and $15pp is pretty cheap too. Not to mention it helps out the museum who have done it tough because of Cv19

  • In time for the Tutankhamun exhibition?

    • +1

They postponed the exhibition due to covid. Bummer.

      • Real bummer. Was looking forward to that. Guess I'll just have to wait. Hope it won't be disappointing.

  • -1

    Entry fee now removed.

  • +5

Meanwhile British Museum is free all the time. We have much to learn.

    • +4

Easier to be free when you’ve stolen significant items from other countries’ cultural history.

      • +1

Not easier at all. All the artefacts at the British Museum have been preserved and restored. The contents of the British Museum were donated and not stolen by them. What is fact is anything found by the locals was destroyed or sold. If it wasn't for these archeologists we would have a lot less to look at and admire. Tutenkamun would certainly be a non event, I have seen the exhibition at the BM and found it brilliant.

  • How good are museums?

  • +1

This museum is great but I think I’ll just go on another day and pay the $15 entry. The previous free event was good but lines were pretty epic! Go as early in the day as you can handle.

    • +1

Even worse was that 12 months ago they promised members would get the first chance to see the refurbished museum (i.e. before the general public), and now they not only renege on that, but they also turn around and let everybody in for free. Guess I won't be renewing my membership next time around!

  • Costs to go see a Museum? lol

    • Where do you live where museums are free?

      • +2

adelaide costs nothing to go inside. Entry is free. There may be a charge for some special exhibitions. Museum Members receive unlimited free VIP entry to all exhibitions. The Museum is open every day from 10am–5pm, including weekends and public holidays.

        • But it's Adelaide where the shops close on 5 on Sundays …

There may be a charge for some special exhibitions.

          So not free, then.

          • @kerfuffle: all basic exhibitions are free. And here what paid gets you if you wanted to pay its not much https://www.samuseum.sa.gov.au/membership But yes you enter for free walk around no need for membership. Always been free for donkey years.

            • @mobbie1996: It's SA - The government pays people to move there….. The NSW Museum is a little bit different to SA's……

      • Newcastle

  • -1

They don't even half of it when it is free 😁

  • They should make this a week long free entry.
The lines and COVID restrictions are going to make this a terribly experience.

    • Right on time with heatwave today.

  • +1

Is this FREE entry offer only on 28/11 or from then onward? Can't make it on 28/11.

  • -2

Would rather watch someone watch paint dry.

  • +1

Keen to check it out and take some photos 👁, thanks OP!

  • I'm in. Didn't see any lines but quite few people inside.

  • Was ok

  • +2

We spoken with a security staff there, he claim the FREE entry is up until next year June. So there are still plenty of time to plan your day how ever you like to visit.

Experience was ok but I am more impress with South Australia museum ones when they are always free and yet offer a lot more to see.
