Truecaller: Caller ID, SMS, Spam Block & Payments Premium INR ₹529/Year (A$10.19) (VPN Required)

81

I've mentioned this "deal" on the Youtube Premium thread.
If you create a Google account with a primary Indian payment profile, you can use the same account to buy apps or subscriptions on Google Play Store. Some apps are a lot cheaper if subscribed through an Indian profile.

If you have the app installed, you have to uninstall it, change the Play Store to the Indian account, and install the app. Once you open the app, the prices will be in INR.

Truecaller is just one example.

There is currently a 7-day trial if you want to try it before making a decision. I've found Truecaller very useful to block sellers and spammers.

I couldn't find the RRP in Australia, it seems to be $15.99/year in USD.

The Premium Gold is INR 5000 (or AUD 96), or USD 149 (my Australian account says AUD 299 as the maximum in-app purchase, so that's probably the Premium Gold price in Australia).

*I've previously used the Urban Free VPN extension (Edge) to create an Indian Google account.

We have to pay out of pocket for Shopbacks mistake of giving all out information out?

  • +1

That's about AUD10.19/Year (₹529/Year) for those too lazy to google.

    • Thanks, title updated. I had added the information but deleted by mistake when updating the post.

  • Probably won't work for iOS

Be aware, Truecaller work by harvesting your contact name and numbers and tells others who the person is..

    • I think a lot of people done realize that all their contacts get added to TrueCaller's database once you install their app.

Yeah hate this thing. I never new this until someone told me how they found my real name using my phone number. I had to then sign up on there to change my name.

If you want to use it then don’t allow access to your contacts

      • well you can have an old phone with Truecaller installed without any contacts.. this way you can find what you need without sharing your details.

Do Google Pixel phones have a similar service built into the phone for free? I know 'Hiya' service is bundled with Samsung phones which work about… less than half the time.

    • Samsung phones which work about… less than half the time.

      Sounds like a Samsung product.

Also, be warned that even as a premium subscriber, you will still be presented Ads to take up a loan.

  • General account question: So I can have 2 google accounts on my phone and they can work simultaneously with the store and apps? (ie. i don't have to remove my aussie account)

    • +3

Yes, that's correct. If you have more than one Google account, you can choose the account on Play Store, before searching an app. For example, Hulu or HBO apps are only available in the US. If you search them using your AU account, they won't be found (if you are searching from your computer, you will see a message saying the app is not available in your country). You can quickly alternate from your AU to the US account and you will be able to install Hulu or HBO apps. Depending on the app, you might still need a VPN to access the content, or a payment method from the US. I believe Hulu requires a credit card from the US (changing the address only, as people are doing to get the Youtube price from India, won't work), and an IP address from the US during streaming.

Using your IN account, you can install Hotstar app (and subscribe), but you need a VPN (IN) for streaming.

      • Awesome, thanks, will give it a go

      • Regarding hotstar app, do you need to have indian mobile number for otp ? Looking at hotstar Disney bundle

        • +1

I haven't tried, but I believe if you have an Indian Google account you can download the app and start the subscription through Google Play. If that works, you don't need to confirm phone number. You do need a VPN active while streaming.

  • Very interesting app. Thanks OP.

$10 per year is very reasonable and something I can think about buying.

The $60 per year normal charge for "real" Aussies is a total rip-off.

  • if you read the list of permissions True Caller needs and wants it is as good as paying them to take all your and contacts information

The app can't identify the number if it doesn't have access to the number, and it has to match your contacts to show who is calling if you use the app as your default call manager.

You can deny all permissions, and keep using your default Android app, but I don't know how useful would the app be if you do that.

Paying to sell your own personal data hardly seems like a bargain to me. Recommend a hard pass for the sake of your data and everyone in your contact book

  • As an alternative I've found Should I Answer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mistergrou…) to be great at blocking spam calls, very few get through and it's so accurate (no false positives from what I've found) that I just set it to reject suspected spam calls and not even notify me (I can still manually check in the app).
It's also free on Android (available for iOS but requires a subscription).
