I am in IT, I get PC's for myself, but Apple products for the Family.
They have an issue they go to the Apple Store.
Want an app, go to the App store.The build quality is very good, but yes expensive.
They generally they just work (apart from 2020 being the year Apple introduced the Placebo Fan) and before that the Butterfly keyboard debacle. My daughter was hit with that, she took the device back to apple, and they replaced the keyboard (new model keyboard), very quick process.
Generally can't upgrade them, but they have excellent re-sale value, v's an old Lenovo, Dell or HP is pretty much throwaway despite still being very usable devices. People just don't pay much for them second hand.
Refresh is very simple. Login to the new device, then it all comes down either from iCloud or the old device directly (depends on the age of the old device).

@nightelves: Same. MacBook air 2011 still going strong. Unfortunately I can't find any reason to upgrade as it does exactly what I expect without missing a beat
@Jjklark: From what I've heard older models like yours have better build quality too. And they didn't glue everything on the motherboard so they are easier to fix.
This is the model with the "placebo" fan.
The overheating issue, isn't as bad on the slower i3 model, but would not recommend the i5.
So suitable for a school\uni person, but not if you watch you-tube, as any stream that requires CPU decoding kills the CPU (as-in gets too hot your your lap, and thermal throttles)"2020 is a crap year for anyone who wants an "Entry Level Macbook"
Really need to jump up to a mid-range Pro where they actually have a FAN attached to the CPU heatsink, but that's a hell of a lot more coin.
Also Apple's efforts will focus on development of apps and ecosystem for the ARM model CPU's, the potential re-sale of an these INTEL models could be impacted.
Bought the MBA and MBP for my daughters (one wanted more power, one wanted gold). Both very happy. This is quite a good price for the build quality and new keyboard.
MBA daughter constantly streams without issue. That said more Netflix, Prime, Disney, Apple TV+ than YouTube so encoding is hardware accelerated. YouTube I will have to ask if she has had issues, but she hasn’t said.
And who knows when ARM Machines will be available And what they will actually be like, including what software will actually work on them.
What the hell is up with that processor speed? Seems to get slower with every release
i3 is faster than prev i5. can upgrade to i5 for $100 more. but not recommended

You also get the Education discount on Apple Care, which I believe you can't get applied to this.
recommend this so much. silver is the colour you want to get as the other are painted on. and i3 is a good one as it doesn't run too hot.
They're anodized, which is a lot tougher than paint.
You can scratch through it if you really abuse it but it shouldn't come off often.
Did an OW price match last week for the 2.0ghz model and they were ok with it. They did add $15 for the shipping.
Extra savings went into buying a few dongles. Not to mention 12 months interests free via zip.
Just price matched at OW this morning. They added $14 shipping cost to WA, so $1380 in total.

Surface Pro! No way. Going through the pain of 4th replacement Surface Pro / Surface Laptop from my work as they wouldn’t replace 2018 version with any other brand laptop as it’s like to like replacement. Blue screens, unresponsive screens, connectivity dropouts and constant CPU and RAM max outs have made life painful.
