normally these go for $1599 even refurbished
price will go back up when sale is over on 16th

this Inspiron 7490 is a poor man's XPS 13
premium feel and components on the cheap
with the existing fitout you are unlikely to require any upgrades:

  • magnesium alloy build
  • i7-10510U 4 core CPU
  • 1Tb NVMe
  • 16GB RAM
  • MX250 graphics 2GB GDDR5 for some light gaming
  • 14" FullHD 300nit 100% sRGB screen (no touch)
  • 3x USB 3.0
  • Thunderbolt 3 port with power delivery
  • Dell says it weighs just about a kilo
  • 52Wh battery
  • backlit keyboard

I reckon this makes XPS 13 redundant pretty much.

  • Hey mate what size battery does it come with?
    edit: found it, 52whr

    • +2

      52wh

  • -5

why is this one so expensive compared to the other deals? This one has an inferior graphics card

This deal makes my Vostro 5490 I got for $849 look like a bargain

    • +3

Because this is a premium, lightweight option?

There's more to a good laptop than just specs.

      • -3

Premium? Inspiron is the lowest tier. Vostro is the next tier up

        • +1

Yeah no. Entry level Vostros are very basic, you're not getting business quality at that price.

  • Isn't modern AMD better then Intel?
PS Does it have a really good screen (video editing etc) or just an average?

    • The new AMD chips are great, but a lot of the budget laptops they come in are a bit crap (Lenovo with horrible screens for example)

    • Does it have a really good screen (video editing etc) or just an average?

It has a good 100% sRGB colour gamut coverage panel.

But not quite full sized as you asked for in the forum, maybe this 15.6" Inspiron 7500 fits your requirement better, this one is also 100% sRGB gamut coverage too.

      • Thanks a lot, that's helpful. Do you think it is safe to buy those refurbished ones?

        • Yes, it has lots of good feedback, e.g.

The last refurb unit I bought (XPS 9560) was like new.

        • +1

My last one was absolutely mint.

I think there are reasonable extended warranty options if you want.

        • Can be hit or miss but you can return it within 14 days. You don't even have to pay for return postage, they pick it up from you. I got an XPS 13 refurbished (about a month ago) that had some issues so I returned it. Then I got a XPS 17 that has had no issues whatsoever and is a better laptop for me.

          • @killingtime: What was the issue?

            • -1

@Homr: Random freezes in both Linux and windows. Could not figure it out so just returned it. Xps 17 no issues

        • +1

yes. let me put this into perspective for you

let's say someone buys a Dell laptop retail. as soon as the laptop box seal is broken it cannot be sold through retail channel again.

by Dell policy all change of mind returns fill the shelves of Dell Outlet. that's what most of this is, change of mind returns.

if there are any marks, Dell condition will be "SCRATCH AND DENT". if it's "REFURBISHED" it will look and feel new.

    • this is suitable for content processing, yes.

  • +3

What is the closest option to this except with a touch screen? This is actually exactly what I'm looking for but I can't go back to no touch.

    • Which laptop you have now? I've been trying to find a decent laptop with touch screen

how about this? 3 year pro warranty! it's a latitude, they are business machines extraordinaire

      • In this case it's the integrated graphics that kills it. Currently have Dell 7359 that's like 4 years old and the only problem I have with it to date is the integrated graphics… and the bezel is really aged I suppose. This deal literally had every spec I want bar the screen.

        • Try this one

          https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-latitude-14-74…

3 years NBD warranty with business grade (you can change it to 3 years basic onsite after remote diagnosis for a ~$165.11 discount)

          Here you go

$1259 (sale price) -165.11 (warranty "downgrade", still 3 years onsite though) = $1093.89
          +$149~ for 1TB SSD upgrade (Kingston 1TB A2000).

It does have integrated graphics, though if you're not gaming, this won't be an issue.

          • @cwongtech: damn good price for a 7400 latitude
if only the screen was a bit brighter

            • @shabaka: This unit is anti-glare (matte) finish, should be fine

  • how is this different to this -https://deals.dell.com/en-au/productdetail/5ney
I understand this is a bigger and heaver laptop but looks like better spec and value for money, any comment would be really appreciated
    Inspiron 15 5000 Laptop price $1258 after 40% discount. .

    • This has double the ram, double the storage and a very similar CPU for less money.

That one has a bigger screen + keyboard and full new warranty. I'd rather have this.

      • +1

Also slightly better build quality as this one on a offer is 7000 series.

  • Does anyone know how this would be for video editing?

    • not bad in terms of i7-16gb-good colors-plenty of storage
a ryzen 8-12-6 thread CPU's should be better at this, but there are no ryzen laptops in this kind of build/screen/price range yet

you can wait till black friday, and see if decent Ryzen laptops go down in price some, however something tells me black friday is going to be an Intell sellout. I have been wrong before, though

  • -3

Keep the MX250 and give me $100 off, useless junk.

    • +5

it's rather simple. this is not a gaming machine.
if you want a 2060 there are lots that way
but not in a tiny body
and not for this sort of money

you'd be surprised how much gaming can be done on mx250

      • I wouldn't be surprised, I sometimes watch low end gaming YouTube videos and I'm impressed with what can be done. I guess I just value different things.

I'd either have a slim productivity based notebook with no dgpu or a notebook with a 1650 or better in it if I wanted to game at all. However, there are those who want something in between and I guess this is a good as it gets for the price.

My 15" slim laptop is almost 5 years old and has a 960m in it which is still 25% faster than a MX250. So anyone getting this now is having poorer gaming experience than my near 5 year old system that had a low end GPU at release.

        -Edit-
Here is an example of Notebook I think is a better deal for anyone going to do a bit of gaming on it:
        https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-g3-15-3590-lap…

        Costs $1,109
        Specs:
        - i7-9750H
        - Windows 10 Home
        - 512GB PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD
        - 8GB (2x4GB) 2666MHz DDR4 Non-ECC
        - 15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare 300 nits IPS LED
        - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5

        • I know where you are coming from, it's just market has niches for a variety of use cases
mx250 beats built in graphics hands down (384 pipelines is no joke), and for someone who only had built in graphics to date, that's a lot

they can pick up things like half life 2 or portal - the fact that they are old doesn't mean they lost their cool - and game on something that would otherwise be just a portable word processor

          that's a huge step forward

downgrade for you and maybe 15% of people out there
          upgrade for 85% the rest

yeah I have seen g3 3590, few weeks ago they were going for $879 and up on Dell Outlet. who cares, that build.. different market, mate

          • @shabaka: Check out:

            https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-g5-15-5590-lap…

            $1309
            - i7-9750H Processor
            - Windows 10 Home
            - 1TB PCIe M.2 NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive
            - 8GB (2x4GB) 2666MHz DDR4 Non-ECC
            - 15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare 144Hz refresh rate 300-nits IPS LED
            - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5

For an extra $110 and a loss of 8GB you get a significantly faster gaming laptop.

            • +2

@FabMan: yep, I know. however people buying the laptop listed here value portability and weight over gaming capabilities

g5 5590 is a 3 kilo brick that can kill a cat if you drop it

7490 is a portable magnesium laptop that you are likely to take with you to a cafe for your sunday coffee

              different market, mate

              • @shabaka: Totally, I concur

weight matters to alot of people

              • -1

@shabaka: I never considered 2.7kgs to be heavy for a notebook. My Zenbook is 2.3kgs and I find it easy to take around, but I guess we all have different levels of what is portable.

  • I need a 2in1 so that I can claim it for work. Can someone advice if this is a deal - https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-xps-13-7390-2-… ?
    or open for suggestions.

  • holy crab 3 1 units left

  • Just got the last one….

    • lucky!

  • 😭OOS

  • So. Bought it. paid for it. Money withdrawn. Then get a message it's out of stock

    Well thanks Dell.

    • that site could use improvements
it doesn't match high standards of OzBargain

    • Yeah the Dell outlet site is total rubbish. At least they don't make you call on the phone to order like they used to!

      • yes that was extremely popular haha

    • yes. until this Friday a lot of stock is sold at the price that the resellers normally pay. tl;dr bargain!

    • I would pay attention to the Latitudes. 3 year pro warranty, and these guys will last 5-7 years. Latitudes are best laptops money can buy. and right now they are going cheapo

      • Now don’t make doubt my last purchase :-)

        • +1

          haha ok I am zipperlips

  • I see lots of reviews saying this has fan issues/overheating.

    • I am wondering if there's any laptop for which people don't post reviews that it's overheating

CPU's run hot. ta da! that's the truth. welcome to reality
the solution is to learn how to control power management

my work Ryzen 3000 laptop runs hot whatever I do - that's a problem
my personal laptop runs cool and quiet because I tell it to
it also has reviews about fan noise and overheating

so the problem is not the hardware
the problem is lack of skill

      • I've never had a laptop that heats up this much like the dells and I bought bought 3 laptops before my recent dell purchase

        2006 - Acer
        2007 - Compaq
        2017 - HP 840 G3

My HP 840 G3 will max out at 63 degrees so seeing my dell reach 100 degrees was a surprise to me.

  • Just received the laptop its amazing … on minor issue i noticed is the left side key is bit pressed… not sure if i should informing the support for replacement ot thats part of re-furbised term n condition ? It works.. no problem just that key is little let protruded in compare to others.

    • odd, try contacting support

      • Ok will contact support

    • if i should informing the support for replacement ot thats part of re-furbised term n condition ?

No if its not perfect, you are entitled to at the minimum warranty service.

Can you take a photo of the issue?
