They were already stung previously as well then made an even simpler mistake. At least the last one was a hack. Who would make a generic code that gives out freebies? At least put a limit on the code. This is just plain stupidity.

      • +6

It seems instead of pouring money into TV ads they might want to hire an IT person.

      • Agree with you but we gotta hear the other side first

  • +4

    Greg, if you read this…

If your undies are as good as claimed, I'll be buying 15 pairs, and you'll have a customer for life, and I'll tell everyone (and probably show them too, knowing me).

Free pairs for 10k people could be a massive loss, or could be the most effective marketing you'll ever end up paying for.

Good products sell themselves (as long as you can get a few people to try you out).

Given the money back guarantee on first pair, the only thing to worry about is if people place multiple orders (which you could detect with IP check, address check, email check).

I'm keen to try. And if they're good. I'll be keen to buy.

    • I'm also hoping they are good, the last pair of underwear I liked was a few years ago from a website that no longer sells them. If these are as good as they seem, it will probably be my go to brand for years to come :)

    • This.. id be in for at least 10 for me and 10 for my son.

      • Yep. I was into icebreaker undies for a while but moths started to eat my wool clothes so I'm going away from wool.

        Icebreaker are nice undies though.
        Not cheap.
Exofficio are also ok, but have that synthetic stink (think polypro thermals vs wool thermals)

    • -2

mate they already have a running promo to get a refund if you don't like your first pair… Just buy one and try them.

      • Doesn't sound like you disagree with me.

        Free pair either way.

Customer for life if they're good.
Go out of business if they're not.
Those mechanisms apply regardless of this or any other promotion.

  • 231 upvotes so far, assuming that is also 231 orders… $6699 in undies and $1848 in postage costs… expensive mistake :)

    • +7

postage probably $5, item cost probably $2
but definitely way more than 200 orders, more like 2000+

      • Postage max $3.30. Large letter 250g. I reckon even that gets some bulk discount to bring it below $3.

    • +1

Are you kidding it is X 5 minimum that figure :)

      • +1

Based on those who have logged in and upvoted only - no I'm not kidding.

Yes, there would be heaps more who browse this site without an account who ordered for sure.

    • +1

(13958 clicks) 14k clicks. Yeah this is going to be a headache

  • FIWW I've received an email order confirmation.

    Will see what happens…

  • +5

i'm confused. when setting up this promotion wouldn't one assume that they would set the limit of free items to be capped at a certain number? that is easily done. Unless it is a marketing play and they just collected thousands of email and details to send promotional information going forwards… If its not the latter they need to sack there IT team.

    • .. we don't have an IT team so we have learnt a very expensive lesson!

      • +5

The use shopify. It seriously does not take an IT person to check 'Limit number of times this discount can be used in total'

      • +3

Millions of dollars in TV Advertising
who designed and is running there website??
you cant run a eCommerce business like that without IT staff

        • +1

perhaps they’ve decided to budget for TV advertising instead of an IT team 😂 seriously tho, IT professionals are underrated

      • +3

Doesn't sound like they actually learned that lesson.

    • +3

its really as easy as setting limit numbers on items of stock
      really its not that hard

  • +3

As an Ozbargainer who loves discounted and free stuff, I could Not take advantage of any deal full knowing this "may or could" potentially make the company a loss or go out of business.

Even if there is a working code posted, I cannot roll with being part of this especially when there are store reps posting it has been a mistake.

    • Totally agree. Well explained.

    • Respect.

  • 12364 clicks… jeeze louise

  • -3

I see @MagicMushroom posted Greg's response from an earlier mishap.

    • This has been posted nearly 5 times already.

      • For real? Sorry. Combination of smaller photo screen today, kids yappety yapping and pulling on my legs. With a side of spouse 'can you get me this from somewhere in the house that's totally inconvient. Plus Netflix. :) I apologise.

  • -3

They prolly need to consider suing their IT guys for negligence!

    • +4

Very likely it's the owner themselves running IT or cheap freelancers from places like India, Pakistan, etc, which good luck trying to sue them. The owner has mentioned previously there's no IT team

    • +6

They dont have an IT department…

Maybe they shouldn't do these sorts of promotions till they do. No one to blame but themselves.

      • +2

Online business without IT team? Is my personal data safe?

        • That's one of the reasons why our data is never safe.

  • I think everyone is going to get an email saying voucher code is only for selected people, and to compensate everyone gets a 50% voucher!

  • +11

I do actually genuinely want to try these. People say good things but $29 per pair is pretty far into "never ever ever ever" territory. Even with their money back guarantee there's no way I would pay $30 for a pair of boxers

    • +5

for that sort of price, you could get some very comfy ones from Calvin Klein at their outlets. Or even Hugo Boss ones at the outlet.

      • +3

Or continue buying generic Kmart boxers which are 70…80…90% the same for 10% of the price. A bit of stitched lycra made in China for $30? Pffffffff

Make it 3 for $30 and I'd consider it

      • Or Uniqlo ones for $7.95 best ones I’ve owned.

    • +3

When I checked out the code had disappeared and I ended up paying $31 for 1 pair of boxers, it was then I realised how overly expensive these are.

    • +3

That's why you buy in bulk, with some mates or wait for a discount. There was a discount a few months back and I went in with some mates and ended up paying around $15 a pair or something. They are expensive but I have never tried undies like them. Way better than CK or Bonds or anything. I still have the ones I bought from them years ago - admittedly the rear is starting to become too sheer to use but still.

      • +4

Yeah but I'm not going to take a $150 gamble on boxers, I've never tried the product, and would certainly never spend $30 to "test" whether I like them or not. If they want to get their products in my hands, and in the hands of plenty of other potential customers, then they need a more compelling option than "buy one for $30"

        • +1

But the first time you ever buy a product is a test isn't it?
I certainly get what you're saying but you can't expect free trials of a premium product like this.

Perhaps spend the $29 (or use a 15% off code from the wheel right now = $25), get your first pair and see if you like them. If you don't like them, get your $25 back. If you do, you can now wait for a good discount like I was talking about.

          • +1

@JoKing: I know what you're saying too but this is OzBargain. If they are happy to sell these at $15 in a bundle and presumably turn a profit, buying these at double the price for "no reason" makes you a sucker :p

            • @Ezekiel2320: Well that's business. A lot of companies sell bundles or bulk orders cheaper - especially in the corporate/industrial market. We just aren't used to seeing it in the commercial market. I am not sure how much cost price is for these, but I would assume they wouldn't make much off $15 a pair, which is why you have to buy so many for that to happen.

I used to wear Bonds but suffered from chaffing a lot, so when these fixed that problem I was super thankful I spent a bit more. I guess each person values things differently.

    • +2

      Checkout Uniqlo Airism

      • I prefer my Stepones over Airism because they have more "support". Personal preference though.

    • +1

Me too. Keen buy $29 + postage is a large gamble for one pair.

  • For anyone that bothered to play the game/spin the wheel, and got a screenshot, and has plenty of patience, you can contact customer service, and they might provide you with a new code. Took almost an hour, but I got it.

    • lol

  • Damn it I literally ordered a pair of these last night. Oh well code's expired now.

  • +5

fyi i actually spun the wheel, and won 'WATCH GRASS GROW LIVE'. Here's the free link for anyone else who wants to claim the prize: https://www.watching-grass-grow.com/

    • +1

What is that in the driveway?

      • +1

a Hulk costume in a blue dress!!??

  • +1

code expired, and are these the same guys as koala mattress?? who sell OK products at inflated prices and promote heavily on social media?

    • +2

Huge marketing budget = huge profit margin

  • +1

should send it out for free if we all agree to appear in their ad in our step one gear….show our junk in their trunk

    • +1

I'm in for the ad, and I have the gut to go with it.

But I'll need a good deal on a pair of socks if you catch my drift.

  • +1

I love the fact my ozb live feed is dripping with Step One ads; maybe this was the point of the code? Pretend to slip up with the code cancel most of the orders and create the buzz (3pages of comments and counting) and trigger google ads algorithms. I can’t believe they made a similar mistake as last time.

  • +2

All orders are being cancelled apprently according to CS on facebook. They told me they were 'hacked' when I asked why. They linked me to a comment on this forum where someone had pasted in their reply from the previous deal mishap

    • Would you mind posting a screenshot of your chat?

      • +2

I acctually got the code when I spun and sent them the screenshot (it was invalid when i went to use it). Their reply from the previous deal mishap was in 2019 btw. Don't feel bad for companies that make stupid mistakes. I'll add in the sc now

They also linked me directly to the second page of this deal where the comment about the previous statement was posted.

    • +5

Hacked?, same excuse as last time, just another clever marketing strategy

    • Poor form if true

  • +7

"Hacked". If they can't even admit that they stuffed up big time once again I have no sympathy for the company whatsoever.

  • +1

If anyone wants the 15% off code it's RVB3JJV6X.

    Cancellation email received:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but we had a tech issue whereby a $29 code which was meant to be unique, was created but was not unique.
The code was posted to a few coupon sites and we had an enormous volume of orders come through. Far more than our marketing budget had allowed for :(
This is our bad and lesson learnt. Unfortunately, we simply cannot afford to honour free pairs so have to cancel your order.
We do however understand that we have made a mistake and as a make-good, would like to offer you a 50% code for to try a single pair of Step Ones.
A single pair is normally $29, the code below will allow you to buy a pair for just $14.50
    H2J65HH3.
We are really, really sorry about it and know we’ve had an incident like this before, we are just trying to be creative in our marketing and do different stuff, but sometimes there’s a hole you don’t plug which we will be more diligent about.
Please accept our apologies and we like always will try to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
    Regards Greg

      Beat me to it.

    • +6

      Classic Greg move

    • +2

FYI I got the email too and my 50% off code was different than yours, implying it is unique. You may wish to edit it out before someone uses it.

EDIT: Also Greg said all FREE pairs were cancelled even though I paid $2 for mine.

    • This is our bad and lesson learnt.

      And from last time:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/446806#comment-7098959

so we have learnt a very expensive lesson!

Seems like expensive lessons happen every year there :S

    Cancellation of order email received

  • -34

    Hey OZB Fam,

Yep, we got caught again with our pants down. Since the first mistake, I have hired an IT person, what happened is simple to explain, but yes, our fault again.

The wheel was meant to generate a unique code on each spin. For some reason, for a period of time, about 20 minutes, the code created was the same one and obviously NOT unique.

I’ve read through ALL the comments and appreciate all of them and yes, you are all right, there was a HUGE amount of traffic, nearly 3,000 orders.

Yes we advertise on TV, but we don’t pay for prime time, we are not as big as some of you think and I’ve now grown a team of nearly 6 who help out in all parts.

FYI - We do offer a 30 Day First Pair Guarantee, so you can buy a pair, and if for whatever reason you don’t like them, then we will refund you. We also offer a 12-month warranty.

They are made in China yes, they are made ethically and I’ve personally visited and know every factory inside out to make sure we are making them correctly and ethically.

We do need to cancel the orders as it’s a huge amount of money to me. I am however going to offer you a 50% off a single-pair code, so you can try them for just $14.50 in Australia. You will shortly receive an email with the code contained in it.

We don’t want to do just the standard advertising and bore people, we try to come up with different ideas and promotions to keep it interesting and build the brand and as you can see, sometimes we slip up.

Really sorry about this again and I hope you can accept my apology.

    Regards,

    Greg

You are one of the culprits

Way to go Greg, Second time

It’s probably done on purpose so you can get all our data including our address and email.

we simply cannot afford to honour free pairs so have to cancel your order.

But you can afford to advertise on TV which has to be a couple thousand on its own. Thanks for taking all my personal data and time

      • +8

It’s probably done on purpose so you can get all our data including our address and email.

More importantly, Greg knows the size of underwear we wear.

        • +9

          Hey RSmith,
As mentioned in other comments, all data will be purged/deleted and will not be used for any purpose.
          Regards
          Greg

    • +1

How about some guarantees that you wont spam emails or use harvested data ?

      • +1

You have my word on this. All data will be purged & deleted. Very sorry.
        Regards
        Greg

        • -4

I have received 3 marketing emails already.

    • +10

So this 20 minute window where the codes weren't generic just happened to be while we were spinning the wheel? That's one helluva coincidence..

      • +9

        Because its bs

    • +2

      So… About my TV ad….?

    • +10

The wheel was meant to generate a unique code on each spin.

FYI When you hard code a coupon code into a JavaScript file… it doesn't magically generate unique codes.

    • -2

Thanks Greg. Don't listen to the freeloaders on here.

    • +10

For real though, if your IT guy is telling you that it was setup to be a unique code and just didn't work for 20min he's lying and you need a new IT guy.

Otherwise if this is just something you've made up for the internet, you should just tell the truth, because it doesn't make any sense…

Also your undies are good but please stop spamming me with ads

    • +3

Are you aware you maybe in contravention of the Gambling Regulations 2015 by not honouring prizes to genuine winners?
Also by confirming orders and taking customer details you may have entered into a contract; one that is not a 'pricing error'.

    • should have enough courtesy to send individual emails to every one apologizing for the muck up. Rather than every one trying to find this post which has been hidden due to numerous negatives

  • +14

As they are going with this rubbish excuse, I will never buy from them again. Can't keep making the same mistake, wasting our time for free advertising and collecting our data (why can't I change my vote?). Scum move.

    • -1

Maybe if you weren't so impulsive haha

    • -11

Was an honest mistake, we don't operate like that and I hope you can understand Descartes.

      • +8

Yeah honest mistake for the second time. It’s starting to get old and scummy now

      • +6

        The evidence would suggest otherwise.

      • +2

Wasn't a mistake, poor form for data harvesting and free marketing.

Hopefully step one gets banned from here after this

    • you would have never bought from them full price in the first place.I don't think they need your business
