  • Id wait for something with 16gb of RAM and minimum 1650ti.

    Similar price range.

  • the ports are?

  • I have this and the only downsides are the short battery life and the screen isnt that bright.

Plays the Witcher 3 pretty well.

  • How's Lenovo shipping time? Is it still bad?

    • as per eBay listing, if you order now get it next Tuesday

    • The last deal on here for the IdeaPad Gaming 3 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/567264, I ordered on Sunday night and it arrived Tuesday morning. Had free shipping too. Was really happy about that

      • That was a great deal and I'm kicking myself for missing out on it. How is the machine from a thermal/throttle perspective?

Weight wise is it heavier than 2.5 kg?

        • I got mine delivered yesterday (IdeaPad Gaming 3). . played COD: Warzone last night which is a very demanding game but i was kinda impressed with the thermals. . the GPU at 95% to 98% utilisation was staying between 62 to 67'C i believe for like 2 hours session. . wasn't able to trace cpu temp though through MSI Afterburn. .

      • How does your laptop go with the heat?

My vostro 5490 I7 10510u arrived yesterday and the temperature on the CPU scares me.

It idles at 60-70 degrees and any processing task it will shoot up to 100 degrees. I'm not very happy with the Vostro and thinking of returning it. My vostro was a refurbished stock so maybe someone returned it for the same reason as me.

        • @Homr, I was looking at the same vostro because I wanted something 1) lighter 2) without too much compromise on performance and 3) doesn't make me look like a doofus in a meeting. I checked a review of the Vostro and one of the reviews highlighted the thermal issue with the vostro. The review looks quite superficial however it does highlight the temperature here: https://laptopmedia.com/highlights/top-5-reasons-to-buy-or-n…
Is the above true for all Vostros? Perhaps @shabaka can comment

          • @WarChief: Hey Warchief,

besides the heat issue, the vostro does look really good. Portable and very very light.

I read that review before I bought it and was thinking 51.7 degrees won't bother me. But now knowing it reaches 100 degrees on the inside I'm a bit concerned.

btw how does a laptop make you look like a doofus??

            • +1

@Homr: Allow me to qualify the statement:

Carrying an entry level gaming laptop with vents that resemble a Lamborghinis front vents, along with a weight and fan noise to match might make you look like a doofus with management staff. You can add in red colour stripes, and a dragon logo to really up the ante and make sure no one takes your feedback seriously.

The Vostro styling seemed to offer the perfect balance of lightweight, entry level gpu, weight and the dell logo to offer that serious business vibe. As you've highlighted though it comes with it's own shortcomings.

Do you think thermals are a vostro line issue or you got unlucky with yours?

              • @WarChief: Interesting, I didn't know a laptop can be used to judge someone on their work attitude. Next time I see someone rocking up to a meeting with a Inspirion I'm gonna start laughing at them.

"serious business vibe" - I like that word :D

I think theres a issue with the whole vostro line thats why they are often on "sale"

                • @Homr: should it be "an" Inspiron? @Homr

I assume there are no sarcastic elements in your comment.

Another example of what I was referring to would be the Lenovo in this ad. The laptop looks like it means business and can be an entry level gaming laptop at the same time

@WarChief: Whats your line of work Warchief? You seem like a serious white collar worker.

Wouldn't 15.6 inch be too big to be considered as a business laptop?

                    • @Homr: ICT.

15.6 is large however IMO that is a smaller price to pay than having a keyboard that is not touchable

                      • @WarChief: I've got a Latitude 7 series 13.3 from work and the latitude range is IMO the gold standard when you need business reliability. It's quiet, no thermal issues, fan noise is minimum, lightweight, FHD, keyboard is good enough for touch typing, USB C power and dock capability to name a few.

They are however expensive compared with the vostros and inspirons. I recall in one of the other posts @Shabaka mentioned that ebay is the best place to find a good deal for a latitude

                        • +1

@WarChief: why are you getting a vostro if you already have a lattitude 7?

                          • @Homr: It's a work computer and locked down pretty tight. Need to separate my ozbargain life from work

                            • @WarChief: are you buying a laptop for home use? Why not get desktop instead?

                              • @Homr: Have had my fair share of desktops. Don't want another project in my life where I'm constantly tinkering and updating items to make it better than before. It is always one more upgrade away from being a better machine.

With a laptop you are looking at limited upgrades and something that meets your needs at that point in time. With the understanding that this would have limited use after a few years
