$50 off iPhone SE (2020) 64GB $699, 128GB $779, 256GB $949 @ JB Hi-Fi

193

My Price Hipster alert was triggered, indicating a drop in iPhone SE 2020 models at JB HiFi. $50 off all models, the first price drop since launch I believe.

Showing $4.99 for tracked postage or free click and collect.

I'm guessing price beat available at Officeworks (at least on the 128GB and 256GB models) until they wise up on this and price match.

Same pricing as the Big W eBay Plus promotion from back in June: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/541654.

    Or $549 on Voda

  • Hey OP, what is this Price Hipster you speak of? Does it just monitor a certain model or item? I like the sound of that.

      • Thanks.

I was having a look, just wanted to get some user input on how good/reliable it is.

        • +1

Have found it useful and reliable. Generally setup product alerts for when things purchased on my Coles MasterCard drop below my purchase price so I can claim price protection.

          • @Jad: Is this price protection on all Coles credit cards or only some?

            Is there an annual fee?

    • Compared to Pixels that cost almost the same but are sluggish already?

      • You're going to need to be more specific, but again: I wrote "next year's" models. We'll see some performance numbers for next year's high-end in a month or two, but that can readily be extrapolated into mid-range expectations.

Apple appear to have not pushed the process advantage of TSMC's 5nm due to thermal concerns.

        • +7

Making authoritative comparisons with next years releases is an utter dick move, also completely at odds with what we’ve seen historically.

            • +2

@jasswolf: First para: “let's more precisely define the expected performance”

              Expected is not is.

I don’t much care to be honest, can only benefit the market to have some competition but it’s just so tedious getting these authoritative takes from projections.

              • -2

@0jay: It's an announced microarchitecture, as far as speculation goes it's pretty concrete.

                Enjoy your handwaving arguments though.

            • +5

@jasswolf: So you're telling me that chips that will be in flagships 12 months from now will be as fast as a midrange phone I can go buy right now?

That's hardly a problem with the SE2020, that's the biggest positive.

              • -1

@freefall101: Unless you use your phone to constantly export videos without any regard to camera quality or media/game consumption, this is a bizarre mid-range pick the second you step outside of the Apple ecosystem. It fits fine within Apple's business model, but it's a silly product.

What use cases it does have, will be wiped out by next year's mid-range, through the architectural changes I have outlined. That will take time to seed into the market of course, I'm just pointing stuff out for people who actually browse the comments for this info. Said mid-range phones will not technically outperform it, simply match it where it counts, while offering a better screen.

Some people keep abreast of this stuff while bargain hunting and look for it in the comments, some people purchase for others or advise others. Some people jump into an argument with an underdeveloped concept of what should be in the comments.

                Which are you?

                • +2

@jasswolf: Some people link to SoC benchmarks then say the SoC doesn't matter, why are you talking about it? The screen on the SE is fine, the chipset and support is amazing. The phone is not the screen, nor is it the SoC, it's the package. People in the comments don't want to hear "wait a year to get a phone with the same SoC power".

Dude, give it a break. Next years SoC isn't life changing enough to be a factor in decisions made now.

                  • -1

@freefall101: I agree, it is the whole package, so paying a $200 premium for an experience because it has an Apple logo on it is really dumb.

        • +2

Why not just compare this iPhone with some random phone that will be released in 10 years time?

          • -1

@solidice: Because I'm not operating at the level of a cartoon character…

            • +2

@jasswolf: Yeah you kind of are.

              • -1

@0jay: BRB while I fix my irony meter… the needle just blew off entirely and spun through the neighbour's backyard.

                • @jasswolf: How bout y come back when you’ve calibrated your hubris compensation armature.

                  • -1

                    @0jay: [steeples fingers]

Imagine commenting on the pridefulness of others after basically squawking 'no' a dozen times about a relevant commentary despite supporting evidence.

Get back to whatever class you're skipping, it'll do you good.

    • +1

I guarantee you, the people that are buying this just want their home button and don't give a toss about the rest.

      • -1

I realise that, hence dropping my small paragraph into the ocean of nonsense that surrounds tech discussion in most consumer circles. :P

    Vodafone deal is much better.

    • previous offer showing as expired, can anyone confirm?

I got this phone. I must say the battery life is shite!

    • +2

Perhaps get a warranty assessment? I have this phone and battery is similar to any other smartphone i.e. 1.5 days with minimal use or 18-24 hours with normal use.

    • I was worried about it but mine lasts 2 days, with spare often. I have a bunch of stuff turned off, like location services and Bluetooth. And set it up for privacy such as turning off Siri. I use it throughout the day for web browsing and email etc. I’m happy with it.

  • 256 GB?

  • -1

Looks so-outdated by today's almost full screen phones.

    • Yeah probably true but I like being able to hold it and not accidentally touch the side of the screen. And the size is good for holding one handed.

Not sure about the sellers credibility though?

  • OW are matching the price now.

  • where is the $50 off shown, just coming up as normal price.
