  • Doesn't seem like I can add to cart - click "add" and it just takes me to a blank cart. Guessing it's out of stock already and their system hasn't updated :(

Take extra note for B key only - if i'm not mistaken SATA M.2 SSD drives only, not NVME drives.

    • +9

I have put that in bold hoping people will read it

      • +2

Hahaha I missed it! Imagine that.

    • Any recommended ones for nvme drives?

      • +2

No, most of them are too $$$.

      • Orico has one for about $40 at Mwave

      • +2

Yes about $39-49 but even the slowest nvme drives will be bottlenecked heavily by the fastest USB 3.1 gen 2 standards available.

I have one. Tops out at around 850MB/s for a slow nvme drive that does > 2000Mb/s.

Many nvme drives will exceed 3000Mb/s

        • The point of NVME is with Thunderbolt though, so you're not capped at USB 3.1

But NVME heats up so much that speeds will probably be slower than SATA after a certain amount of time. Had it not been for the novelty I wouldn't have bought one in hindsight.

  • Is the original 2015 MacBook Pro SSD a B-key one? can it be used in this product?

  • +3

    Nice!
Still holding out for a B+M key enclosure though!

    • Yup. I need M. Hoping I will find a good price on one.

  • Does this support Crucial P1 1TB SSD M.2 PCIe NVME 3D NAND?

    • +6

      From my understanding No
The comments above said it only supports SATA based M2 SSD, not NVMe based M2 SSD

      • Thank you, I am finding one for Crucial P1 1TB SSD M.2 PCIe NVME 3D NAND. they are not cheap, $55 for a Orico enclose.

        • It's about that price for a USB 3.1 gen 2 one. I have one. I have a comment up top about bottlenecking and not even reaching 50% of the nvme drive potential. But my exclosure is USB 3.1 gen 2, not Thunderbolt.

          Which is insanely expensive

          • @lawyerz: The thing is, you should know going into this that an external enclosure will always bottleneck the drive. If you were going for as minimal bottleneck as possible, you'd have the drive straight in the mobo.

            • @jjsu: yeap i knew from the start. It was a deliberate decision, was still 50% faster than SATA SSD for a reasonably priced enclosure. slower NVME SSD isn't that much more expensive over their SATA counterparts.

  • Thanks for this.

I bought a SATA m2 for my boot drive thinking it was NVMe when updating my hardware.
Only got 1 slot on my Motherboard so the SATA won't go to waste when I replace it :)

And it's gone. Went from 4 to 0 in the time I refreshed a few seconds apart :D

Bought one from eBay for $12.85 don't have chance and drive to test it out yet.

    Can this one do most? 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Aluminium-M-2-NGFF-SSD-SATA-TO-U…

    • Seems like much the same. Supported sizes are also 2230, 2242, 2260, & 2280. Guess the only real difference is the warranty. On eBay only get 30 days support and 180 days for Paypal dispute. Amazon pretty much would just refund. Still, $12.85 is a good price

      • Yeah but still didn't support M.2 PCIe NVME

  • crap… need one of these for work bum!

  • Dammit sold out. I actually needed one of these :(

    • You can easily find one on eBay for a similar price.

From a seller in China pretending to be in Australia, no thanks.

        • I bought one on 1 September, got it in 3-4 days.

How fast can this go (copying files) using an above average drive?

    • The Read/Write speed will be limited by the SSD you install and the drive being transferred to, as well as the type of files being transferred. (many small files vs big file).

But generally you should expect around 450mb/s if the transfer is to an internal SSD storage, or 120mb/s if the internal is a regular old spinning hard drive.

I've had one these for a few months now, I get ~420MBs/R and ~350MBs/W using a 500GB Crucial

  • I rather wait for a combo M+B key , i think worth the wait…..
