Telstra nbn 100 Unlimited (FTTP/HFC) + Home Phone $90/M (12 Months) - No Contract/Fee + Free Modem (Telstra Company Stores Only)

2843

I'll start by saying I hate dealing with Telstra, but the service provided has been reliable so have not had to deal with their poor customer service much.

I believe it's a deal because for $90/m (for the first 12 months) you get unlimited NBN100, phone line and calls, a new modem with 4G cellular backup, free install, no contract and 3 months of Binge.

There are cheaper plans, but they generally don't come with a modem or have free cellular backup, or Binge for 3 months.

Short version so you don't need to go though the pain I did:
I have to move from Telstra Cable to NBN as Telstra Cable is finally getting cut off. There is an unadvertised in store special that offers $20 off per month for up to 12 months on Telstra's $110 "Premium Speed + Unlimited Data" NBN100 plan. The deal appears to be available from Company owned Telstra Stores only. There is no commitment, no connection charges, and a free modem with 4G cellular backup.

It is a current discount available to all customers moving to NBN or moving to Telstra on the $110 plan. But only available at Telstra Company stores.

Longer Version:
I moved to Telstra Cable from ADSL a few years ago, as NBN was not available in my area and Telstra was the only option for higher speeds.

When NBN came and my neighbours jumped across to NBN they complained about NBN having continual outages and poor performance, so I stayed with Telstra, and only had one outage over the last couple of years.

Telstra Cable is now being turned off and I have no choice but to move to NBN.

I'm currently paying $89/m for unlimited uncapped Cable and home phone with calls. I'm getting between 93-110Mbps so can't complain there.

I thought I would try changing plans the least painful way by reaching out to Telstra via Social Media, but they just said the retail plans are all they can offer ($110/m).

I called Telstra to see if I could just move across to NBN without any changes and have the same speed and pay the same price. They said no problems it would only cost $1 more a month making it $90, I said ok happy to do it. But after faffing about for 30 minutes they read out the conditions and told me that was the NBN50 service. I told them that was not the same as I was already on 100+Mbps. They then said they could only do it for the retail price of $110. They suggested visiting a Telstra Shop as they can offer discounts the call centre cannot. This whole process from waiting on hold to giving up took over 1.5 hours.

I visited my local Telstra shop for the first time, they also said it shouldn't be a problem keeping everything the same, and again tried to sign me up to the NBN50 plan for $90. I again pointed out this was not the same. They then told me they are a franchise store and they do not have access to the discounts that company stores have and told me which stores nearby are company stores.

I visited one of the suggested company stores and was told there was a 4 hour wait to speak to a consultant. So left.

I visited another Telstra store today and was told the wait was 30 minutes, and they would call when someone was free. This was ok today as I had other shopping to do anyway.

When the appointment came they also offered to put me on the NBN50 plan, I again told them that was not the same. Then they told me it would be $110, I said that was too much and I'll go with mate or one of the others instead. They then looked through the list of promotions available on screen and found there was a $20 a month discount on the $110 plan for up to 12 months available. No install fee, new modem (same Gen 2 as I already have), no contract.

It really should not be this hard to retain a customer.

Edit: FTTP or HFC ONLY for new customers. YMMV for existing customers NBN100 using FTTC/FTTN

    That was quite the adventure

I stopped reading half way through but still give an upvote just for the effort of writing the complete story.😄good deal nevertheless.

      • I have had exactly the same issues Telstra so not helpful but I want this deal you have $110 with free modem and $20 off how do I find the store to provide?

    • +34

I've said this in another Telstra thread but this offer is only for Telstra cable customers migrating to nbn HCF or FTTP.

They get $20 off for 12 months on the $110 Premium internet plan bringing the price down to $90.

If they offered this for new services you scored but it wasn't designed this way.

Either way if you're on Telstra cable and your future technology is NBN HFC or FTTP and youd prefer a call back let me know and I'll arrange one.

I'm not in sales so I don't get any commission but like OP mentioned there is a wait due to our call centres and the covid dilemma. Frankly I just want to help.

I’m in the middle of this exact scenario at the moment. Had the service connected about two weeks ago. Unfortunately it wasn’t provisioned correctly when changing from 100mbps cable and I’m now on 50/20. After over 24 hours of back and forth through the app based chat speaking to 5 different people in different teams, I’m still being told it’s not possible.

It’s okay if it wasn’t possible in the first place, but I was told that’s what would be done by Telstra before connecting. If it wasn’t the case I could have chosen a different provider and both my time and the time of Telstra’s huge team of people wouldn’t be wasted.

I wish everyone luck getting it right the first time. Would recommend doing things in a store if possible for highest probability of smooth processing.

        • You signed up for NBN100 thinking that you would get it but instead got NBN50?

What is your NBN Technology? HFC? FTTN? FTTC? FTTB? Satalite?

          • @Turd: Hi Turd,

I completed a standard Telstra ‘move’ which apparently maintains the same level of service with the same plan type at a new address. When moving from 100mbps on Cable at the old address, they’ve put me on a 50 plan at the new one for the same price.

I’ve got FTTP so could theoretically get up to the gigabit service from ABB.

            • +1

@Millikano: Ahhh Unsure why they think 100Mbps Cable = 50Mbps FTTP.

              Are they stupid?

Move to different provider or at least get back 100Mbps speed with same price. (if they let you)

              • @Turd: Agreed.

I will keep trying. Thanks for reading and understanding.

      • +1

Thanks for your help when I was in the same circumstances.

      • I'd love a callback. I've been trying to secure this deal for a month, but no one wants to budge from $110/mth. I finally just gave up and ordered the 3-mth special that's currently on the website ($20 discount for 3 months) which is due to be provisioned on Friday. If I can get the discount for longer I'd be very happy.

      • Telstra actually offered me this plan because I am on 100MB cable which is disconnecting soon, but they are also going to give me $5 off the $90 making it $85. I went to telstra store to see if I could take up this offer and the store said they can't give that offer and I should wait for Telstra to move me to that plan.

      • Hello,
I’d really appreciate a call back.
I’ll try to DM you… but I’m new at this!!

I did miss the Capital T though, so I apologise for that to Turd.

        • Nope not necessarily, I’m FTTN on this same Telstra deal (nbn100 unlimited). I get a 82MBPS download speed. I just recontracted 2 months ago 🤷‍♂️

          • @pauliau:

I’m FTTN on this same Telstra deal (nbn100 unlimited). I get a 82MBPS download speed. I just recontracted 2 months ago

I guess your original contract was from before they discontinued the sale of 100mbps FTTN plans? I think even if you can't get a huge speed increase like yourself it's still worth it for the better upload speed.

            • @Agret: Um I think a 32-38mbps speed jump is definitely worth it over the 50mb plan (for the same price!)

        • I recently got the 100 plan on Telstra FTTN, had to fight for it though.

        • Upvoted because of the helpful info Turd gave in later posts

And… also because every subsequent post could be construed in both either a derogatory reference or addressing the user by their screen name.

          Gotta love the OzBargain wit.

    • Dumb question, I have FTTC. Why am I eligible for nbn 100 on Superloop but not nbn 100 Telstra? Is it because Telstra is preventing me from getting nbn 100 or is Superloop taking me for a spin, or something else?

      • +3

Telstra policy, not to signup people on to NBN100 unless they are on FTTP/HFC

Thanks Turd. You the real shit.

          • @dsar: Hey! don’t take a dump on my family..

            • @ccrap: No shame in being no.2!

      • If I recall it's a choice by the ISP, a lot of the major providers (Optus, Telstra) got slugged by ACCC a couple of years back from the number of complaints from FTTN/B/C customers who had signed up to 100mbps plans but weren't getting it, despite continuing to pay for it over a period of time.

Action was taken based on the complaints, but at the time we had to notify customers (past and present) that they were entitled to refunds of the difference between what they paid for (100mbps) and what they were realistically getting (25mbps plan I believe). The issue mostly stems from the fact that FTTN/B/C is a total crapshoot in terms of the last mile connection quality. FTTC might be a bit better, I think the tech came in later? At the time most of our issues were with FTTN/B customers

Because of this we basically stopped offering the 100mbps option for FTTN/B technology customers at the time given that a large percentage of them could simply never hope to hit 100mbps

Source: worked at an ISP at the time and had to deal with some of the remediation required

      • Because they know that the copper that they have installed into households over the years is substandard and always has been

    • ‘This deal is for FTTP and HFC connections only.’ Just made your statement a bit more legible, Turd.

Comedy equals telstra plus time as the Marx Brothers used to say.

  • +8

No contract but you have to pay for the modem if you terminate less than a year?

    • I've seen that written here before, but did not see in the papers I signed today.

      • +3

100% you will need to pay off the modem if you leave without the time period.

Telstra isnt gonna give you something for free, that's not their MO.

        https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

There are no Early Termination Charges if you cancel your plan. However, you will need to payout the remaining cost of your Telstra Wi-Fi Modem (if you received a modem included in your plan) if you cancel your plan within 24 months of connecting, and any outstanding Hardware Repayment Option repayments will be payable in full.

        • Once I get my NBN install date confirmed I will get the contract emailed then and I'll double check.

        • 100% you will need to pay off the modem if you leave without the time period.

You don't need the modem if you're on HFC or FTTP.

          • +5

            @jv: You are 100% right.

However Telstra like to spin things and their PR has marketed their "modem" has the best thing that's ever happened since sliced bread. So they can sell a over priced product to you. Have a look modem is worth about $20-$30 new at most on ebay.

Also the older Gen1 modem's are pretty good actually (esp for $20-$30) root it and it's got all the features unlocked and hardened, you dont want a Telstra Air wifi or Guest wifi do you.

            • @Turd: Guess the gen1 "modem" is the router Technicolour DJA0230?
Any guide you recommend to root/tweak?
Currently on Telstra Cable and need to transition to NBN. Would maybe keep using this one on Telstra NBN or ABB

          • @jv: You do need it to use their VoiP

            • @DoesntEvenMatter:

You do need it to use their VoiP

              I already have VoiP

              • @jv: Well this deal is with a home line and is only available with their modem/router since they won't provide the Sip details

            • @DoesntEvenMatter: I already have VoiP,

              This plan includes VoiP.
              Local calls included
National calls to fixed line numbers included
Calls to standard Australian mobiles included
500 13 number calls per month ($0.40ea after that)

Can't be unbundled to save money.

              • @petestrash: I've been on this plan for the last 3yrs now since I got FTTC with 100/40 unlike the 100/20 you get now, first 2yrs I had free foxtel now too and I think I have some other version of it now for free but don't use it

          • +1

@jv: Still need the modem for the 4G cellular backup…

        • Can you return the Modem if you leave within a year and original condition?

        • Telstra isnt gonna give you something for free, that's not their MO.

That's something I'm expecting from them… I got shipped NBN gear from Telstra many months ago (without asking) whilst I was still on their cable package. It was a smart modem + Telstra branded HFC cable adapter. So I'm waiting for them to ask for it back since I've not taken up Telstra on the NBN but haven't heard anything yet

          • +1

@aragornelessar: Keep that modem, I assume it's the older DJA0230 modem, it's very good when you hack it and make it work. Ive got 3 of them, and use them for parents etc..

$240 for 24 months. It takes $10 off that for every month you stay with them. If you leave after one month you owe them $230.

The "deal" above + IQ4 Platinum x 2 rooms for $224 per month.

I didn't really think it was a deal because I'm not a fan of Telstra + I thought this deal had been around for a while?

Edit - Didn't need to go into a store either…..just get the right person on the Telstra app.

The "deal" above + IQ4 Platinum x 2 rooms for $224 per month.

Wow, that's more than twice what I pay with Cable and Foxtel.

            • @jv: So post the PDF bill on here? I'll wait…

              • @jimbler:

So post the PDF bill on here?

                why?

It's not a currently available deal.

It's a grandfathered bundle with extra discounts applied to stop me nagging them.

      • I thought so

      • The modem is included at no extra cost if you stay with them for 24 months. Price of modem is $216 or $9 a month. HOWEVER, if you are transitioning to NBN and already with Telstra the modem is entirely free as they have to provide you with an NBN compatible modem. If yours is already one of the smart modems they won't/shouldn't send you a new one.

        • Modem has to be included in the offer and they cannot exclude it. That was they told me few months ago.

          • @yht: Nope, not correct. For new customers they include it unless your adamant, if they say you have to and you intend to leave before 24months, get them to leave a comment that you don't want modem. Easy to get it credit if they ever charge you for it.

            • @drmantistoboggan:

Nope, not correct. For new customers they include it unless your adamant,

              Why?

All you need is a router.

              • @jv: Don't know. Guess they want people to think they have to have it, so they can charge a cancellation fee if they leave early. Way to keep customers locked in now that their plans are casual. But definitely optionable. Saw a tick box when they did my parents order.

              • @jv: They can’t easily troubleshoot your connection if you don’t use their router. As customer contacts are a major cost driver, it could be beneficial to just provide the hardware at no cost as it means you’re more likely to use self help and cheap chat help options to get clarity around the nature of your (connection) issues.

        • Telstra sent me a new modem when I transitioned to NBN even though they had already supplied an NBN ready modem when I switched to them for ADSL a year before.

          • @imp: Did you end up going to Telstra or another provider?

Did Telstra charge you for the modem?

They love forcing users on to their NBN thinking it's less hassle, less downtime etc etc.. Great for the older Foxtel loving folks I guess.

            • @Turd: No charge for the modem. Had to send the original one back though (prepaid post).

              • @imp: Interesting.

    • I returned my modem in a Telstra store and they didn’t charge me for it.

  • Thanks OP!

I was going back and forth with them yesterday and they weren’t able to offer any deal at all.

    • This was the same offer they offered to me that i accepted to migrate to NBN. They also put in a $30 one off credit.

It's not a code, it's just a talk to customer service nicely for this offer, If fail try again or different time/day.

Telstra is losing customers by the droves and will do anything to keep users on, but will happily rip off new customers who dont give a two shits about discounts.

      • Thanks, i kind of figured it could be either the code or a hint to go to a store :-)

      • Customer service won't give you this.

It is strictly Telstra company stores only.

          • @Turd: It's not false in my case.

I was asking in July and got nothing.

Maybe they now they also offer better plans, but it shouldn't rely on who you speak to or multiple calls to find someone to help.

At least this is consistent and available in store.

            • @petestrash: If you fail with asking, try again another day with a different person. Keep trying until you get what you want, otherwise move to different provider.

        • Telstra has moved their customer service outside of Australia. It's very hard to deal with them. Pay Telstra rip off rates and still have to deal with the slow and pathetic customer service. No thank you.

          Better to stick to ABB/Superloop.
