Telstra nbn 100 Unlimited (FTTP/HFC) + Home Phone $90/M (12 Months) - No Contract/Fee + Free Modem (Telstra Company Stores Only)

2843

I'll start by saying I hate dealing with Telstra, but the service provided has been reliable so have not had to deal with their poor customer service much.

I believe it's a deal because for $90/m (for the first 12 months) you get unlimited NBN100, phone line and calls, a new modem with 4G cellular backup, free install, no contract and 3 months of Binge.

There are cheaper plans, but they generally don't come with a modem or have free cellular backup, or Binge for 3 months.

Short version so you don't need to go though the pain I did:
I have to move from Telstra Cable to NBN as Telstra Cable is finally getting cut off. There is an unadvertised in store special that offers $20 off per month for up to 12 months on Telstra's $110 "Premium Speed + Unlimited Data" NBN100 plan. The deal appears to be available from Company owned Telstra Stores only. There is no commitment, no connection charges, and a free modem with 4G cellular backup.

It is a current discount available to all customers moving to NBN or moving to Telstra on the $110 plan. But only available at Telstra Company stores.

Longer Version:
I moved to Telstra Cable from ADSL a few years ago, as NBN was not available in my area and Telstra was the only option for higher speeds.

When NBN came and my neighbours jumped across to NBN they complained about NBN having continual outages and poor performance, so I stayed with Telstra, and only had one outage over the last couple of years.

Telstra Cable is now being turned off and I have no choice but to move to NBN.

I'm currently paying $89/m for unlimited uncapped Cable and home phone with calls. I'm getting between 93-110Mbps so can't complain there.

I thought I would try changing plans the least painful way by reaching out to Telstra via Social Media, but they just said the retail plans are all they can offer ($110/m).

I called Telstra to see if I could just move across to NBN without any changes and have the same speed and pay the same price. They said no problems it would only cost $1 more a month making it $90, I said ok happy to do it. But after faffing about for 30 minutes they read out the conditions and told me that was the NBN50 service. I told them that was not the same as I was already on 100+Mbps. They then said they could only do it for the retail price of $110. They suggested visiting a Telstra Shop as they can offer discounts the call centre cannot. This whole process from waiting on hold to giving up took over 1.5 hours.

I visited my local Telstra shop for the first time, they also said it shouldn't be a problem keeping everything the same, and again tried to sign me up to the NBN50 plan for $90. I again pointed out this was not the same. They then told me they are a franchise store and they do not have access to the discounts that company stores have and told me which stores nearby are company stores.

I visited one of the suggested company stores and was told there was a 4 hour wait to speak to a consultant. So left.

I visited another Telstra store today and was told the wait was 30 minutes, and they would call when someone was free. This was ok today as I had other shopping to do anyway.

When the appointment came they also offered to put me on the NBN50 plan, I again told them that was not the same. Then they told me it would be $110, I said that was too much and I'll go with mate or one of the others instead. They then looked through the list of promotions available on screen and found there was a $20 a month discount on the $110 plan for up to 12 months available. No install fee, new modem (same Gen 2 as I already have), no contract.

It really should not be this hard to retain a customer.

Edit: FTTP or HFC ONLY for new customers. YMMV for existing customers NBN100 using FTTC/FTTN

          • @crazyboy: So the call centres have all opened up again and you no longer get Aussie support? Wasn't the case last week.

            • @Clear: I dealt with them couple of years ago when I phone service connected to them. They are helpful but very slow to deal with. I don't use Telstra anymore except Boost (which uses Telstra network).

              • @crazyboy: All the call centres were closed because of COVID so they had to have locals again.

        • +2

There is no difference between a company owned and a licensed store in what they are able to offer. However each store will have quotas to how many discounts like this they are allowed to give out per period(be it week, month, or entire run of the below the line promotion- however it gets dolled out)

Source; I ran a licensed store for 7 years.

          • @ONEMariachi: That goes against what the licensed store manager told me, after telling me to go to a company store and telling me which local ones were company owned, they were able to provide a lower cost than he was.

I told him I was not in a hurry and had a couple of months to get it sorted before the cable was cut off.

If his quota had just ran out surely he would have just suggested coming back next week/month whatever.

            • @petestrash: It may be a specific quota for the actual run itself- or he was an idiot that didn't know about it. They use the exact same siebel, with the exact same options. The entire ethos of Telstra is One Company, and the systems function to allow any unit to do the same things as others.

I'm getting between 93-110Mbps so can't complain there.

    What about during peak ?

    • Evenings 6-8pm 93Mbps is the lowest I've seen.

    • Even during peak on Telstra FTTC I get about 106MBPS. Their networks is still the strongest and better then the rest. I haven't even had issues with support which has been surprising, fixed nice and quick and even have my own manager or consultant

      • What plan are you on? Telstra doesn't offer 100 Mbps on FTTC

        • I've had it for 3 yrs now. 100/40 plus all that's listed in this deal

        • anymore
          They used to offer before.

  • +1

Recently switched from Telstra to Tangerine. Telstra kept trying to convince me to stay by offering all these deals, none of which are even competitive with the prices Tangerine is offering. The best offer they gave was $90 for NBN50, which was still pricier than Tangerine's 100 plan at $75 (first six months). I managed to keep the Smart Modem from Telstra too.

If they had offered me this NBN100 plan, I might just have stayed with them.

    • Recently switched from Telstra to Tangerine

Has Tangerine turned out to be a Lemon?

That's the Telstra sales process: repeatedly, over and over, attempting to rip the customer off.

And once you get a good deal a "mistake" happens so that you don't get provisioned what you agreed to. After they fix that up, after months waiting for the TIO complaint, another "mistake" gets made and you are getting charged more than you agreed to followed by more months waiting for TIO.

Largest ISP in the country and it constantly attempts to rip off and defraud their customers. Privatisation of telecommunications has been a disaster in this country.

  • +1

Also, this offer is only for Telstra transitioning customer. I think new customers can only get 3 months worth of credit.

    • I asked in store before posting this, they said new Telstra NBN customer. Does not matter if not with Telstra already. Just don't think existing Telstra NBN customers can apply.

      • I understand but I was in store and read the offer from their system. Clearly stated for transitioning customers only. New customer feel free to try, they may be able to apply it.

  • +2

That's a lot of trouble just to stay with Telstra with an average priced NBN 100 plan already on discount and only lasting 12 months.

    But you do you…

    • +1

I Tried to go to Aussie Broadband when there was a $20 code that worked on plans that it should not have, but the code was pulled before I completed checkout.

ABB is $109/m but calls to 13/1300 cost $0.35ea. and no cellular backup. Current discounts would lower it by $10/m for 6 months.

      Still paying more for less.

I don't care about home phone but have an elderly relative staying with us and they refuse to learn how to use a mobile phone. They make a lot of 13/1300 calls.

  • Any option for Static IP on this deal?

    • Extra $10 a month from what Ive read. If you want static IP.

  • +2

Presuming this is 100/20 it's basically the going rate for others like ABB etc is it not? And then only for 12 months. Sure it doesn't include the modem backup but that's about all you'll miss - along with the terrible customer service.

e.g. the 4 months I've just had trying to close an account that had Telstra cable internet when I moved to NBN. They didn't do it, then "reconnected" it somehow a couple of months later and started charging again. Didn't reverse the bill when they said. Then a late fee for non payment. Then contacted by their credit department twice in one day. Truly hopeless. Sure it was reliable when it worked, but dealing with them if something goes wrong is like pulling teeth.

    • +3

but dealing with them if something goes wrong is like pulling teeth.

I would definitely rather have a root canal than deal with Telstra customers service.

      • I've got to agree with you on this, but TIO is your friend and you get good compensation.

  • So its $90 for 12 and then back to $110 for last 12.
The last 12 is the deal-breaker.

    • There's no contract, you can leave.

      • leave after 12m with $9/month penalty for their modem. Either way stay/leave average is ~$100/m.

        • don't take the modem then, you don't need it.

          • +1

            @jv: he doesn't have a choice

            • @crazyboy: I've just recently organised to go from Telstra HFC to Telstra FttC, when told that I'd be getting one of their modems I told them, "No thanks, I've already got three of them, a gen 1 and two gen 2."

He said no problem, I'll just send out the cable.

A week later a 1.8m Ethernet cable arrived in the mail.

        • cant find (online atleast) option to drop modem. Would rather not deal with Telstra customer service.

  • Were with Telstra High Speed Cable too, we've had it for 10 years.

I keep getting notices, but I'm sure I have til 2021. I'll probably switch to their NBN. I've had very few problems, or drop outs with Telstra personally.

They're not the cheapest, but always top speed.

    • but always top speed.

      not for me.

Cable speed has been shocking lately.

      • Me too.

(Telstra cable speed had been shocking for me too. Had to complain. They kept me online with their chat for 6 hours, with no resolution…)

    • Telstra on the nbn are not the best. I'd go with Aussie Broadband, Superloop or Launtel, which are much better (and are generally cheaper than Telstra)

  • One thing to keep in mind about choosing Telstra vs others is international capacity.

They may operate through different global backbones or through telstra global wholesale.

Something to consider in your decision process. It was one of the reasons I stuck with telstra (although not to say other providers are worse, or better), as well as getting a reasonable deal of course.

  • +2

Urgh similar situation and I'm avoiding it. Cable cuts off in February apparently. Paying $29.95 for 100/5 unlimited (200gb plan that isn't actually metered, plus $30 discounts for mysterious reasons [I'm scared to talk to them in case they realise]). Even this deal is triple the price for the same for me :(

    • +1

lol yes I had accumulated a host of random discounts over the years…. pretty sure none were supposed to apply anymore.

All gone now on NBN … :(

      • yes $10 for "full service phone" - which is ironic as they couldnt connect the phone without digging a $1000 trench (which I said no to as NBN is coming) so finally a contractor just told them it was connected and we all walked away happier. Then $20 for "Bigpond Advantage" whatever that is haha

    • Are you moving to HFC or FTTC or FTTN?

      • HFC

  • Thanks for the info.

Currently with Telstra cable and shopping around as well. I prefer to stay if I can get the same deal as you, but it does sound like a pain jumping through all the hurdles….

    • +2

No hurdle if you bypass all the other things I tried and just go to a Telstra Owned Shop first.

  • +3

I was in the exact same position at the end of July. NBN was finally available in my area and I was on Telstra Cable.
Decided to go through the same process OP to see if I could get same speed and price on NBN and it would have been easier to find a needle in a haystack than to get some decent resolution with Telstra. I knew how notorious Telstra's customer service was (I have 3 services with them over multiple years) and decided that life is too short to be chatting with Telstra for hours and explaining the same situation to multiple CS rep. So I decided to make the jump to Aussie Broadband and it was the best decision I have ever made with regards to selecting an ISP. I can't believe how simple and straightforward the process was. Granted I haven't really had to deal with ABB extensively but I have been very impressed with the whole process. They kept me in the loop with their excellent email communications and everything went according to plan with installation and setup despite stage 4 lockdown in Victoria. I am paying $99/month with ABB for the 100/40 plan FTTC.

    • I love Aussie Broadband but they don't have 4g backup. There were few outages recently and I decided that backup is vital for WFH.

      • Wondering if I can just keep my telstra 4g backup modem lying around for this? Do they actually turn it off?

        • you have to pay for the sim plan, minimum $15 per month

        • Yep it still works, telstra can't cut it off

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: Do you mean you have unlimited 4g modem for free? After you left Telstra?

            • @maxedin: So far yes, it still works but it's limited to 25/2 and because you arnt with them anymore you can't have the throttle/limits lifted

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: they can very easily cut off any of their services.

            • -1

@hek666: No not this, its not a sim it's hw that they haven't figured out how too atleast in thr SG1

      • 4g backup is bullshit. The SIM cards they come with have a very limited amount… can’t remember but it’s like 1-3gb and once they run out you have to complain for a new one. Telstra need to come up with something decent for me to ever consider them again, not that they are interested in my business

    • +1

Did the same as you - went to ABB.

Shame they are upping their price on the higher plans though :(

  • it's available online too
    link

    • Online price is for NBN50, not 100

      • +2

Online link says NBN100 for $90 for me

        • I'm inclined to do that right now. Does it include modem and connection?

        • +1

if you click "Critical Information Summary" you will see the plan price is $110, I thought their website price is wrong.

        • +1

This is a price error. I tried to order it yesterday and the order process reverts to $110 a month.

          • +1

@ihavecentsnotsense: That's true. The total price shows 2640=$110*24month

          • @ihavecentsnotsense: That’s after you login and they see you’re not currently on a telstra plan. This link is for changing plans for existing customers

            • -1

@OzBerghainer: I know. I am an existing Telstra customer and have tried this. Even gone so far as the order confirmation stage to change my existing plan. It reverts to $110 a month.

    • Why did you edit your post?

      • +1

I shared the link originally, then edited to delete it as it would link to my account. Anyway, shared again above ^

    • I saw this earlier and would have gotten this but its a price error, click the button and it says $110 not $90 unfortunately

  • +1

Be aware that Telstra network is down randomly in multiple locations recently

    • Are you sure it's random ?

      • You meant those are notified down? Haha I don't think so they are notified

    • +1

Telstra 4G network was down yesterday Sydney around afternoon time for few hours.
      Down Down Down.

      • +2

        Down Down Down.

It's just marketing to advertise their new partnership with Coles

  • Is existing customer eligible for this promo? If yes, anyone have steps how to get it?
Currently pay much more with telstra.

    • I am an existing Cable customer, but I don't believe it is available to existing Telstra NBN customers.

If you are Telstra NBN you could move to a different NBN provider, and then back to Telstra if you really wanted this deal.

      • Please add FTTP & HFC NBN.

Not all Telstra NBN can get the same as a Non Telstra NBN.

  • +1

whats the upload speed on this plan ? I hate how all providers are now not saying this as many have been downgraded by nbn to 20

    • Residential NBN100 on Telstra is 100/20 unless you get the business NBN100, which allows you to choose 20 or 40

    • I was told its a 20 plan, but currently giving 40 temporarily.

Better than the 5 I currently get.

  • I went through a similar hurdle, going from Telstra cable to Telstra NBN.
They messed up my order so many times i lost count.
I was without internet for 2 months right when everyone started working from home.
Telstra 4G mobile is only downloading at 4-5mbps, but luckily my sister has an Optus 4G sim which had 30-40+mbps speeds.
So i had to tether off the mobile til the NBN got connected.
Also had to hotspot the wife and the family tv to keep the little one distracted.

In the end, had to get TIO (ombudsman) involved and ended up getting $450 credit and free speed boost on the $90 NBN50 plan.

Hope it goes much smoother for everyone else.

  • Not a good deal. I was looking at NBN prices today. May as well call the deal free modem with expensive internet contract

    • Really?

Which company has better deals for 100mbps @ $90pm?

      • +1

Mate is $79pm and apparently provides better customer service (according to OzB reviews)

  • +1

Is this deal 100/20 or 100/40?

If 100/20 absolutely not a deal and also a pain if you have to ever deal with Telstra support……However , if 100/40 , may give it a more detailed look.

    • +1

100/20 for new customers and new people who re-contract, unless you go Telstra Business NBN which you have option of 100/40 but it will cost you.
