Seagate Iron Wolf 12TB
As per the title, this seems to be a reasonable price for a Seagate Iron Wolf 12TB (ST12000VN0008) drive delivered (and one of the few decent deals in the eBay 21% off sale lineup) which is approximately $41.6 per TB. Whilst it is tempting, I think I'll go for one of the recent 16TB shuckable deals, but this is a good option for those who really want that Iron Wolf drive.

It appears you can save more if you buy multiple drives as well ("Buy 2 for AU$619.36 each, Buy 3 for AU$613.04 each") which you can then use the same 21% off coupon up to a maximum saving of $300.

Seagate Iron Wolf 16TB (updated 2/9/20 6:45pm to reflect small price drop)
For those who want the 16TB drive (ST16000NE000), they are $828.71 from Futu_Online as well with the same coupon code. This is a much more expensive $51.79 per TB. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Seagate-16TB-IronWolf-PRO-NAS-HD…

If you can wait 2-3 weeks on shipping, you could for $270 (works out to be $33.37/TB) get an 8TB Western Digital Ultrastar DC SATA HDD - 7200 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, 3.5" DC HC320

I just got 2 myself last month, it's such great value if you can handle the noise haha (mine lives in a cabinet)

    Shuck these prices

Yup, literally half the price. I posted a deal for the 16TB which possibly has the exos drive but it still hasn't shipped from amazon UK.

I didn't post this because I know someone will say Amazon US/UK is cheaper. For AU shucking stock, I found this to be the best bang for buck (Officeworks price match valid for 2 more days): https://www.umart.com.au/Western-Digital-10TB-Elements-USB-3… - $31/TB for AU stock is great.

They typically run at 37 degrees in a 918+ whereas a WD Red would be 31 degrees. I would install these in a home NAS (provided it's not baking in a cupboard with no air-flow). They run too warm in the standard enclosure.

  • If you can give up 2TB, you could always shuck (its easy to do, don't worry) something like 10TB Seagate Expansion

I just bought one the other week and it had a 10TB barracuda pro inside which is a very nice drive.

    • IMHO the WDs are much easier to shuck… the Seagate was far messier (although I did get an Exos X16 10TB in mine!). Coincidentally I also ordered the Amazon UK 16TB deal since I'm not in dire need for space but at that price, it was so tempting to just have the capacity.

The only reason why I'm looking at 12TB or larger is because if I want to expand my SHR, it needs to be 12TB or larger (my current pool is 3x12TB). That being said, whilst this seems to be a good price for AU Iron Wolf 12TBs (given the last decent deals were around $495-$500 anyway), it's still far more expenisve than the shucking approach.

  • tbh I don't think this is a particularly great price, either historically or right now. Keep waiting.
