$20 for Referrer and $20 for Referee after First Purchase | 86400 Increased Referral Bonus

2411

The neobank 86400 have increased their sign up offer for the current month to $20 for both parties.

EDIT: Bonus extended for all of October as well.

I've banked with them for the past 12 months, so here are some random thoughts:

  • App is convenient, but not as detailed as Up bank
  • There is no web app, but that hasn't been an issue for us.
  • They have joint accounts if you ask for them which is a bonus (and currently unique among the neobanks)
  • The interest rate is 1.6% but has fallen in line with the other neobanks. However you can have multiple 100k accounts where the bonus is applied.
  • In order to activate the bonus interest, you only need to deposit 1k per month and that is a simple requirement to meet.

Answers to a lot of the questions in the comments can be found here:
86400 FAQs

How the referral program works:

Where do I enter the code?
- Once you've downloaded the app, make sure you enter the invite code you received on the 'About you' screen during the sign up process.

Invite codes can be found in the "Random" code generator button at the bottom of this post.
- You can add your own code by clicking 'edit' on the right side of the generator

I've signed up - what next?
- Put some money into your account by making a transfer from any other Australian bank account. You'll find your BSB and account number in the app.
- Then, go treat yo'self (i.e. make a purchase) using Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay or your 86 400 Visa Debit card by 30 September 2020.

That's it! You'll receive your $20 bonus in your Pay account within a couple of days.

T&C for current promotion below:

"The Refer a Friend offer will run from 1 April 2020 to 31 December 2020 and is available to all 86 400 customers.

The Refer a Friend offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer (unless we determine otherwise).

“Friends” who were previously 86 400 customers and closed their accounts within the past 12 months are not eligible for this offer.

Only settled card purchases are eligible to meet the bonus criteria. This means we must wait until the card payment has been settled (no longer showing as "pending" in the friend’s transaction history) before the referrer or the friend become eligible for the bonus payment. The card purchase and transaction settlement must occur by 31 December 2020.

Eligible customers and “friends” will each receive a payment of $10 each into their Pay account within a few days of fulfilling the bonus criteria.

September double bonus offer: “Friends” who join on or after 1 September 2020 and fulfil the bonus offer criteria by 30 September 2020 will each receive a payment of $20 into their respective Pay accounts (instead of the standard $10 bonus).

There are always a few people who will try to game the system, so here are some fair play conditions.

We retain the absolute right to refuse to pay or cancel a “refer a friend bonus” payment without notice to you. The reasons for us to refuse or cancel a payment may include, but are not limited to, if:

● we believe that your access to the 86 400 app is or may be fraudulent
● we believe that you have threatened the security of 86 400
● we believe you have breached any of our General Terms
● we believe you are acting in bad faith
● we have locked or closed your account
● your account contains unpaid charges or is overdrawn

We also retain the absolute right to stop the offer at any time and to change the conditions or incentive of the offer."

    • Thanks, that was interesting.

I was not able to add the card to Google Pay after opening the new account just now, and all my existing cards in my Google Pay were removed somehow. Called 86400, I was told that they have issues with Google Pay and I have to wait until the physical card arrives (and activate the card) before I can add the card to Google Pay. Not a Up fanboy, but I have to say Up has a lot better and well-polished app.

  • Just signed up, the app looks cool. Thanks OP and enjoy your $20!

  • +1

How easy is it to close your account? Done via the app?

  • +2

OP is making a small fortune on this one with everyone choosing to refer to him! Good work!

    • +4

I think there is a max of 10 referrals - I'll post again when they are saturated tomorrow. I suggest people divert to the random referral now.

      • You made a lot of "friends" :)

      • +1

It's crazy, this is a website for saving money, yet all the time I spend on here actually costs me money, you sir ozdoc have hacked the system and made money from a deal!

        • +5

Had to put up with all the drama from that first comment though…

          • +1

@TitanFather: Just had a look at that, seems you won round after round. I appreciate the deal and may sign up a bit later even if it’s just for the $20!

Also doesn’t seem that there is any rule saying I can’t after signing up invite my wife and make $60 out of this deal as a family? Hard to neg that.

            • @cc23: We did that when the bank first opened but referral was only $10 so it was a mere $30.

      • +2

Seems like you're in luck on this one!

To celebrate our 1st birthday, for the month of September we’re doubling the bonus you and your friends can earn when they sign up using your code and make a purchase using their debit card or phone.

Better yet, we’ve removed the limit on the number of friends you can refer!

        • That's unexpected! Where did you see that?

          • @TitanFather: Quoted from an "August feature update" email they sent out today.

            Enjoy your bonus!

            • +4

@sircrumpet: Thanks to the OzBargainers that used my code.

              Shown: 372 times
              Bonuses: 63 x $20 = $1260

Definitely the peak of my OzBargain career.

  • I just signed up.

Do you have to wait for the card to start purchasing? Is there any other way to enter the details into your phone and use the phone to purchase without being sent the card?

    • Apparently you can do it instantly

      Starting spending instantly
Don't wait for the plastic, add your card to Apple Pay or Google Pay
      https://www.86400.com.au/pay/

      • Andriod no go for me. I called and they said only apple works straight away. I will have to wait for the card.

        • +1

Not sure that's true, a mate on Android was able to provision and purchase instantly.

  • Anyone know what the minimum required android version is for the app? I'm getting a device is not compatible msg when i try to download

    • Says Android 7.0 or later in the FAQ.

  • can we do online shopping using this account ?

    • yes, once your card arrives, or immediately with apple/google pay on the web

  • keeps declining my medicare card - anyone else have this issue?

    • Does your name on the Medicare card match exactly with the name you've put on the app? I had no issues with my drivers licence.

    • Check out the common verification issues page

      https://www.86400.com.au/faqs/common-verification-issues/

    • I also had trouble completing signup on the spot, using either driving licence or medicare. The message said something about waiting for an SMS before I can proceed with the signup (within the next 24 hours). The next day, SMS came, I was still having trouble. So I rang up, and the chap contacted another dept, and on the spot, I was able to proceed. He said there is a step, they needed to manually allow it to go through. Quite strange, never had issues with other signups before.

    Thanks OP!

In theory, if you use eftpos on Apple Pay, instead of Visa, the transaction should clear quicker, hence the $20 should appear faster

edit: nevermind, it looks like the eftpos functionality requires you to first activate your physical card, and then add it to Apple Pay

  • Thanks OP, just signed up

  • applepay says need to verify ???
    What does that mean

    • I was just about to ask if anyone else got that message. I just noticed a comment above saying you need to activate the card first before setting up but the email from 86400 says “you can set up Apple Pay instantly”. I guess you can add but not setup. I deleted it as I don’t like seeing the badge icon haha OCD much. It’s how I know I need to action or read something!!

      • ApplePay can be setup ‘instantly’ from the app but it may take up to 24 hours to provision the card. Check back tomorrow

        • Too late I had already deleted it from the Wallet and now I can’t add it again. I called up and the lady I spoke to said I’m the first one to say it didn’t work. She gave me a support number 1800857959 and they can’t activate without a card number. Sounds like there is no option to add to the wallet again so I’ll just wait until the card arrives.

      • +1

I called up 86400 to activate my Apple Pay. They said because you haven't activated the physical card yet, you have to activate Apple Pay over the phone. It only takes a couple minutes to verify your ID then launch the app to recite the 6 digit token.

If your physical card is already activated, then you should be able to activate Apple Pay through the 86400 app.

    • +5

You can actually add the card to your wallet and it will show you the last 4 digits of the card you will recieve. Then cancel this go to the app and activate / verify your card with these digits and then u can set up apple pay just fine without any wait.

      • This worked. Thanks for the tip!

        • +2

Thanks heaps. It worked instantly. I originally called up help centre and the girl told me to wait 24 hours. Clearly she didn’t know anything.

      • -2

I couldn't do it with my card. No activation key or something. Anyway had to wait for my card to arrive.

  • Does the purchase have to be in store, or can be online as well?

    • +3

      Either.

      • +1

        Thanks

  • You my $20 op
    :)

  • Adding card to GPay doesn't work for me. The experience with 84600 is much worse compare to when I signed up to UP.

  • when do you get the $20? Do i have to make any transfers or purchases to get it?

    • +1

You have to make one purchase of any value as I understand it to get the $20. The $1000 transfer is just for the bonus interest rate.

On that subject, what are people paying with the debit card? Haven't received the physical card and having issues trying to make bill payments with just Apple Pay.

      • +1

I just bought something really cheap from woolworths

        • With the physical card or Apple Pay at checkout I assume? Looks like a visit to Woolies might be on the cards then.

Any suggestions for an online purchase or payment? Cheers.

          • @squarepants: Yeah with Apple Pay at the checkout.

Deliveroo has Apple Pay in app, if you're hungry and I'm pretty sure Adidas has Apple Pay in their app as well

          • +1

@squarepants: You could buy a $5 Wish eGift card online at Cashrewards at a 5% discount.

            • @bluesky: Only credit card payment. No apple 💰

              • @coolc: Good point, if you don't want to wait for the card. Mine took just about one week to arrive in Vic.

  • Thanks Op, signed up. Will wait for the card to come through and then make a purchase for the $20 bonus

  • OK. I signed up and got an email with BSB / Acc numbers. So far so good. Deposited some money. However, after a day or 2, I still can't log into my App. It says phone them or verify a debit card (which I don't have yet). It feels uncomfortable that I've deposited money but can't even get in to see my balance or get any sort of confirmation that the money is held in trust by a bank. Other than that, the sign-up process wasn't too bad, and the product will definitely fill a need.

    • +2

Do not worry. I have had money with them for months. It will be there.

    • +1

Cust reps are very helpful. Just give them a call. Have rung them a couple of times, and hardly have to wait before getting someone.

      • I've almost never had to wait beyond the welcome message. My partner and I have called them a few times to sort out joint accounts and there were never any issues.

    • Yeah, cust rep wait time is low today. Called to sort out PayID assignment, hardly waited at all.

Was closing my uBank account - waited 20 mins, then another 20mins to close.

  • +1

They are starting to pay out bonuses from those who signed up on day one. You should receive a notification in the app as the $20 arrives.

  • ref only need to deposit 1k per month , does it have to stay in any of the accounts for more than a day to qualify ? does your monthly ending balance need to be increased by 1 k or can you simply transfer 1 k in and out and still earn 1.6% for the whole month?

    • +3

I'm pretty sure you can transfer in and out without issue. I'll try now and let you know.

Edit: Just checked, funds in and out for 30s and the bonus was activated for the month.

  • Thanks Op

  • Has anyone received their ATM card yet? I signed up on the same day this deal was posted here but have not received the card yet. As a result, I still cannot activate my account or make purchases.

    • +1

      same here

    • +1

Didn’t receive the card yet, but I have added the card to Apple Pay and received a notification to activate.

Activated and made a transaction with Apple Pay, received $20 next day

      • Awesome. Looks like this way only works with Apple Pay. Android users will have to wait for the card I guess.

      • Is not it risky to activate without card as if it get stolen ?

        • No balance :)

      • Just wondering what transaction you made with Apple Pay? Trying to figure out a use for it without spending on unnecessary stuff.

  • +1

anyone got the card yet ?

    • +1

      yes received yesterday

    • Received mine today.
      Inner SE Melb

  • +1

    nice card and packaging.

  • Has anyone received the 86400 socks?

    • +1

They are pretty good in both summer and winter

    • How did you get the socks?

      • +1

The piece of cardboard they send with the card has a message saying if you post a picture of the card and "tag" them then they will send you free socks. I think this can be done either through instagram or Facebook. Ive just done it through instagran and sent them a private message

        • Can do on Twitter too and like you said private message.

    • @ozdoc I joined a day before they started the $10 promo last year. Spoke to 86400, and they sent me a merchandise pack instead. Made me happy. They are still a good bank to me a year later.

  • FYI - received this email today. So maximum amount that can receive bonus interest is 150k down from 300k. Should only affect a small proportion of users.

We’re letting you know about a change to your Save account. Effective Sunday 1 November 2020, the maximum balance on which bonus interest is paid will change from $100,000 per Save account to $50,000 per account, to a maximum of $150,000 per customer. This change will help ensure we can continue to offer a competitive savings rate to all our customers.

    • I guess its time to swtich to ING.

      • Only if you have more than $150k in there. The rate stays the same.
        ING is only $100k limit.

  • How long did it took to receive the debit card in mail? I registered on 11 sept but still haven't received it.

    • My experience was only a few days and that was in Tasmania. I'd call them to check.

      • I did call them. They said I would receive it by this week. My concern is, I won't be able to meet their 30 sept deadline for the bonus.

  • For new members- Please ensure you add it in apple wallet or google pay as its too late for the physical card to arrive. I just did a purchase with apple wallet as Sept will be gone by the time the card comes in the mail and the referral bonus will revert back to 10$.

    • That is the first thing I did but google pay show me an error and asks me to contact the bank.

      • Same here. I called them (86400) and they said it was an error/bug on their end, so nothing we can do until they fix it.

        • I still haven't received my debit card. I guess I wont get the bonus.

          • +1

@Iluvfreebies-freeDel: I suspect if there has been a delay and you contact them about it they'll either approve the bonus late or send you out a welcome package (with some nice socks).

            • +1

@TitanFather: I did contact them, they issued a new card and asked me to wait 8 days. When I asked about the bonus, they said they have to speak to their manager about it. I don't want socks, I have enough socks at home.

              • @Iluvfreebies-freeDel: Still haven't received my card either, but they said they will honour the promo bonus as it's not the fault of the customer (Aust Post delays). Campaign has also been extended and the Google Pay fix due this week.

                • @woozie3: They told me the same when I called yesterday. Don't mind the delay as long I get the bonus.

  • +7

    Offer ends 31 October 2020

    • That is nice.

    • +1

Updated post - thanks for the heads up.

      • +1

        Additional condition:

The card purchase and transaction settlement must occur within 30 days of the friend opening an account.

  • +1

From today, you no longer have to choose between having money available to make payments and earning our market-leading interest rate.

That’s right, you can now make payments directly from your Save accounts.

So whether you need to schedule your rent, BPAY a phone bill, send some money to a mate’s PayID, or direct debit your electricity, you can now do it all from your Save account. By skipping the internal transfers, you’ll continue earning interest on your money until the exact moment it’s needed.

If anyone still asks why 86400 is better than ING, this. It is now like a Ubank account without sweeps!

    • This is an excellent new feature. Will use this for all direct debits.
