Have been following the purple HDD for some time and they've just been reduced below $70. Plenty of stock for pick up nationwide.

    • That's a really good price. 2TB on eBay are generally priced between $115-120.

      • eBay prices always seem to much higher than retail stores. I think sellers take into account eBay, PayPal and shipping fees for the sales price on eBay. Even though they make you think your getting a good deal by offering free shipping. Prices haven't changed much on the 2tb. Still around the $98 I paid for the 2tb purple from MSY back on the 11/1/2020.

1tb doesn't go very far when it comes to surveillance.

    • Depends on the set up of course. If you have only a few cameras recording 1080p then it’s probably more than sufficient for 24/7 recording.

I have a single camera in my setup doing 1080p and looking back my footage goes back 2 months to 16 June. Given I’d probably be happy with 2 weeks worth of footage myself, I could probably get by with 3 - 4 cameras with a 1TB drive and still be able to have sufficient history to deal with any incident or cover most holidays.

That said, the costs here for 2TB aren’t much more so I’d still go more if I was in the market for a drive.

    Good deal
Bought this 2 months ago for $110

  • how do these rate as general purpose NAS drives?

If you use a COW filesystem, like ZFS, just fine.

If you use them as regular Journal file systems, "probably fine"'; but the thing that makes them video drives, is that the firmware is set to just move on, and continue the write speed, even if it hit an error or bitflip; where a normal drive would repair the sector using CRC.

Zfs scrubs would mean this is no problem.

Ntfs or ext4 or such would risk writing corrupted data.

      Small risk, but it exists.

      • Can WD Purple be used as a replace HDD for a Topfield PVR or do I need to buy an AV drive?

        • Yes. I upgraded my Topfield with a 2tb WD purple back in January 2020 and its been running fine. The WD purple is an AV drive. Designed to run 24/7.
