I've got a dedicated server running plex and an Nvidia Shield as a player
I watch a lot of movies and TV shows over 5 years+ on plex and never get problems with any media even 4K HDR atmos (ie. 50Gb files) so just wondering if hardware acceleration is necessary

I only run one stream too, it's just a basic little server on my gaming PC. Would be nice to use my RX 5700, because my CPU struggles on some larger files. This is just 1080p too.
you don't need it because you're running a shield, which handles a wide range of video/audio. when you're using clients on things (eg. old TVs) without all the codecs the server needs to transcode, and having hardware transcoding helps a lot.

I use plex quite a lot, I am more than happy to throw them my hard earned but I can't quite figure out the benefits of a plex pass. Anyone care to fill me in?

For me, Hardware-Accelerated Streaming was the difference between my content stuttering and being smooth.
From memory the Plexamp app (which I'm finding fantastic on my PC and Android phone) is only available to Plex Pass holders
Hardware transcoding, TV channels (xTeve) and free mobile apps for all managed users is what i get out of it.
For me, one of the main things was the parental control - something Kodi and others are not good at.
Only mythTV was equivalent, of the ones I've used.
Plex was very easy to prevent kids seeing what they shouldn't.

Plexpass is worth it at the discounted prices. Wouldn't pay full price but it's worth it for the Plex Amp app. I'm leaving Google Play music and going to use Plex for my music. Youtube music is a trainwreck.
It's disappointing that plexamp is unavailable for my users tho.
For keeping pics etc, whats the difference as compared to google photos ?
How its different to Netflix for movies ?
This is stored locally, google photos the most advanced out there, you can search and tag , change dates, check your photos from Maps etc. don't use this much for photos in plex , but if you have chrome cast you can connect your google photos to show up on your TV.
Difference from Netflix , this you can have your personal collection and share to your families/Friends. With Netflix not everything is available on it.

Instead of getting Plex Pass, invest in a Nvidia Shield. Then you get hardware transcoding on your media server for free and a great overall player.
Better value for money I reckon.
And let's be real. The only reason people have Plex Pass is fot hardware transcoding.

I have been waiting for years, Why can't they just put it on sale, I bought a single month a couple years ago and regret it because their system seems to think that I would pay again if not the full discount.
Hardware transcoding would be so nice but Plex Pass even discounted is so goddamn expensive!
