Do xiaomi still make this laptop? When I looked at there china site I only saw a model with intel cpus and an mx350.

    • +8

It's literally brand new so yes?

      • +1

Not sure why downvoted. I'm just saying I don't see it on their chinese site. I usually just buy it from their china site or taobao as its china did it for the k30 pro and the 1s scooter.

        • do you use like a shopping agent ?? e.g superbuy, basetao etc..

          • +6

@john smith123: Nah I just send it to my families members address in shanghai then they forward it to me. I buy pretty much everything from china now including all my furniture. I ship using a freight company via sea mail that goes to my local chinese convenience store. Superbuy is a rip off imo.

            • @gottacatchemall: which freight forward company do you use? Maybe you can type Chinese here too..

      • Brand new doesn't mean production hasn't ceased.

    • I've seen videos saying they make both AMD and Intel laptops (just like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, etc).

    • +1

Its there. I just checked. Its sitting 2 or 3 items behind the intel version. I was pretty tempted to buy it from Banggood until I saw the China price.

      • Can you link me thanks as I'm looking to grab one.

  • Anyone know if ram is upgradable?

    • +1

From what I can see, there are different configs out there but the RAM does not seem to be upgradeable.

    • +14

      No

      Cons
      no webcam
      no key illumination
      SATA SSD
      RAM not upgradable because soldered
USB-C power connection with problems with external monitors

      Chinese Windows

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-RedmiBook-16-Ryzen-5-45…

      • +7

Ehh SATA SSD isn't really a con. NVMe SSD is a pro. But no Webcam… that's a dealbreaker.

        • +1

"Xiaomi has economized on the M.2 SSD from Samsung and has only installed a cheap SATA SSD. This noticeably limits the data rates. In comparison to fast SSDs, like in the MacBook Pro 16 or also in the Huawei MateBook D 15, the benchmark results are very weak."

          • +8

@shaybisc: There's almost zero real world difference.

        • -1

Is no webcam such a big deal? Who doesn't have a smartphone—from Xiaomi, nonetheless!—with a front facing camera and all the webconferencing apps one would desire? All the reviews I saw of Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer, ASUS laptops complained about the poor webcam quality.

          • +2

@wisdomtooth: That's just a silly workaround. Even if you don't use the webcam every day it's definitely going to be used.

      • +1

The fact it has an ssd instead of hdd, is a pro.

      • You forgot, slow crippled RAM

      • No Displayport
        No HDMI 2.0
        Slow RAM.

  • +6

Chinese version of windows, so will basically need to reinstall. No biggie, and probably something id do due to my privacy paranoia, but something to be mindful of.

    • -5

I'm always curious. What would the Chinese government do with your personal info?

      • +15

        Profiling

      • +22

What would any government do… nothing until you're a person of interest, then all your history is at their disposal to use against you!

        • +10

I will do whatever they want me to do if they don't show everyone what type of porn I'm into.

        • -1

That's naïve if you think they do nothing with your data from the average person. The west will make money off you; sure whatever. China however, they don't just want to sell you a new TV.

          • @incipient: So what would China do to your average person's data?

            • @michaelTito: Censorship. Platforms they have deployed globally fingerprint stuff, like an image of an article about the Uyghurs, they know that fingerprint is bad, and if someone else sends that image to thier friend in China "hey look whats going on" that image gets blocked before it even makes it in. No conversation happens. Essentially western use of Chinese platforms reinforces thier censorship regime. This is also not tin foil hat stuff. It happens now. There is experimental evidence of this in action.

              • @incipient: any articles on this seems interesting to read

              • +4

@incipient: Yep, even my Chinese friends won't even speak about government stuff over any apps with fear that could be taken for saying too much. They fear that all apps are being watched. They are not even game to use VPN as some have gone to jail for using one.

              • +1

@incipient: I don't have any friend in China. I don't have any friend in general. How would this affect me if I decide to use the Chinese version of Windows?

            • +1

@michaelTito: Nothing that the CIA (or other government intelligence agency) wouldn't do. If they really don't like you, you'll most likely end up in some place like Guantanamo Bay. If you're lucky you'll probably just end up in prison or on the streets (homeless).

              • +1

@El Psy Kongroo: I really hope they like me after going through my computer data. I dont wanna end up in Guantanamo Bay that for sure.

      • +6

Censorship is a big one for them. There was a good wechat analysis done. They process all of the data they see from oversees users, fingerprint it, and can delete the messages/content before it even makes it into the country.

      • They'd 'share' your info with the CIA.

      • who the fck wants to be monitored by the (profanity) CCP

        • I rather the American government monitor me. That way I feel like I'm in a Hollywood movie.

    • +3

I think you can add English language to it without reinstalling.

If you have privacy paranoia then the version of Windows you want to acquire is Windows 10 Chinese Government Edition as it is a special build of Windows 10 Enterprise with all of the telemetry and tracking removed due to the Chinese Government not trusting the USA.

      • +2

I'd much rather be monitored by the CCP than by the US Empire. What are they gonna do? "Censor me"?? In Australia?? Not like Facebook, Google, Apple, Twitter, Microsoft and the Aussie provincial govt already do?!

Is this place a scam or legit? Also same for the brand - never heard of it

      • +34

Never heard of Xiaomi?? You must be new here XD

      • +11

You never heard of Xiaomi? On Ozbargain?

Redmi is Xiaomi sub brand for budget stuff. Banggood is legit. However these laptops cut a lot of corner and i would rather buy Lenovo for similar price but with warranty.

        • +1

Lenovo cut more corners on the Ideapad than on this one. At this price range, the one thing laptop manufacturers skimp on is the screen. This one is 100% sRGB; Lenovo's ideapad is 54%.

      • +1

        Legit.
Same question for the brand? I don't understand. It's a brand

      • +8

Banggood is legit and Xiaomi is a massive Chinese tech brand (well actually they make nearly anything).

    • +5

As well as the Ozbargain favourite 34" UW monitor.

    • +2

Is there a reason this post wasn't combined with this one? It's same retailer, same product with different specs. And same poster.
      Genuinely curious.

      • +1

Thought it was better this way. 2 ≠ products, 2 ≠ prices, 2 ≠ posts.

    • +1

Please include gst in title, the app will.chwrge you gst in the final step.

      • +1

On mine the app says $891.21 incl GST

    • +1

      Nice, another Macbook Clone lmao

      • If it ain't broke…

        • macbooks are pretty broken

          • +1

@nuttapillar: The internals? Yes. But the aesthetic, the touchpad and the rest of the outside are pretty damn fine.

    • +1

This or the Lenovo Thinkpad E15 Gen 2? I am tossing between the 2. What do you think?

      Pros:
16" screen, slightly bigger and better screen.
      2 USB-C ports

      Cons:
      No backlit keyboard
      SATA drive instead of NVMe.
      No local warranty

      • +2

The biggest con is the non-upgradable 2666mhz ram with poor timings. But I think i'd take this for the better screen.

        • Yea, forgot that one. 2666Mhz ram vs 3200Mhz ram.

      • similar pricing with no local warranty for a brand without a stellar reputation, too risky imo

        • That is a major con, I agree.

    • Seems the SATA is replaceable and supports NVME which is a plus…

      • Can you confirm this? I can't find anything about this on Google. The question is also what speeds can you get after you replace it with a NVMe drive? NVMe speeds or limited by SATA speed?

  • $980.33 after tax and shipping.

    • Where do you see that? I put it on cart and ready to check out at A$891.21.

      • On the app right? App includes gst. Should add the loop hole in the description

      • Unfortunately my app adds gst!

        • +1

Change your location to Australia in the settings

  • Using the app includes the GST. Somekind of bug on their end

    • Or their AUD rate already includes GST.

  • Is the ram at least dual channel?

  • +1

If it had upgradeable ram this would be real good. Screen seems a lot better than the Thinkpad E15 gen 2 which was a deal breaker for me.

Oh just saw the Ryzen 7 version, damn now I'm really tempted

  • +3

    16" laptop without a numeric keypad ? :O

    • +1

      same with apple lol
