Should not be regarded as canon, like the rest of the sequel trilogy. Hopefully soon this will be confirmed by Lucas.

    What a terrible movie.

    • To Disney's credit, I'm having a hard time picking out which film in the sequel trilogy is actually the worst because they're all so bad.

I suspect that Rise wasn't the direction JJ originally wanted to go, but Rian Johnson forced his hand and he had to make the best of a bad situation.

That's why it's a bad idea to give each film in a trilogy of films to different directors and writers. If they have creative differences, someone has to fix a mess they inherited. Or one of them gets to watch the next guy butcher their work.

be interesting if in 15-20 years time the sequels get a sudden appreciation like the prequels have enjoyed lately, despite being objectively terrible movies also

      • why do you say prequels are getting sudden appreciation?

First two of the sequels were pretty good. Its really just the last one which was pretty bad.

TBH I didn't mind prequels but watched it when I was easier to impress.

        • Because he's right, there has been a change in popular consensus regarding the prequels. Personally I think you just have to be the target audience for the movie, they are aimed at youth afterall. I loved the OT, I didn't mind the other trilogies but I appreciated I was no longer their target at 40yo.

          • @[Deactivated]: It's interesting that in light of the lacklustre new trilogy that there has been some revisionism around the George Lucas prequels being not so bad.
You see a similar kind of revisionism with Dubya, who during his period as POTUS was regarded as a hick. But when compared with Trump is now regarded as a statesman-like figure.

            • @bogan:

in light of the lacklustre new trilogy

              not sure that works. :P

if you want a better way to entertain yourself for 2 hours, it's cheaper to get a pair of boxing gloves and just punch yourself in the face.

    • Have you seen the price of boxing gloves?

      • i don't know, but they are worth more than this movie.

Disney and Abrams totally and successfully annihilated the Star Wars name where the Sith could not. The only shining light in these drivel is rather good spinoff 'Rogue One'.

George Lucas, please come back and realise that you are the lone rightful owner and creator of the franchise.

    • He isn't the lone rightful owner, he sold out. Star Wars can be you be done right at Disney, they've proven themselves more than once with The Mandolorian, Rebels, Rogue One. They just need the right people at the helm.

    • Why replace one hack with another?

    • Jaja Binks. Midichlorians. Han shot first.

      Just saying.

      • Vader: Noooooooooooooooo…
