D-Link D-Fend AC2600 Wi-Fi Router $98 @ Harvey Norman

220

A solid router, seems to be a good deal from the ridiculous RRP $499, around $199 mark in the other shops.

Choice gives it a 3 star rating. The speed for both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz is mediocre

    https://www.choice.com.au/electronics-and-technology/interne…

    • Yep average router at best. You have to ask yourself why it's so cheap :-)

    • What does choice say is the best for gigabit? I've never had a choice membership so I only have random comments and reviews to base decisions off.

      • I don't think choice has tested Gig speed. What recommendations have you been given?

        • Aussie says to use Google Nest Hub thing.

          • @AustriaBargain: Nest wifi is right up there for Gig speed performance. I don't like that you have to spend a fortune to get ethernet ports on the nodes.

            • @Twix: I was hoping I wouldn't need the nodes. But I can put off a new router for now.

              • @AustriaBargain: If you need them or not depends how big your property is.

      • DO NOT buy this router (dlink defend) if you are on Gigabit speeds. I am on the Aussie BB gigabit plan and I bought it. I needed an antivirus, plus I had no intention of using its wifi. Due to my network set-up this sits in the garage and connects all of my ethernet ports in the house, whilst my orbi connected via ethernet takes care of wifi inside the house. When I connect this router to my network the max down speed I can achieve is 130mbps. This is on a wired connection straight to my desktop. I connect an old Telstra Technicolor router and my speeds go back to 940mbps down.

I plan on calling Dlink tech support tomorrow to see if there is anything i've missed. If this is the best it can do, its going back to Harvey Norman for a refund.

Cybermen aren't known for being that quick.

(Ok yes it's a stretch lookwise, but that bar design really reminded me of it)

Perfect timing, was just looking for a router today for an NBN connection. Thanks!

    • +1

which type of connection you getting anyways.

i think this mostly good for FTTP FTTC HFC

      • HFC connection. Just need a bog standard router with VDSL, for $100 I'm not expecting much so setting expectations low to avoid disappointment.

        • +1

seems good price defiantly thinking about getting one as well.

        • +2

          HFC is DOCSIS.

VDSL is FTTN, FTTB & FTTC.

          • +1

@Twix: HFC connection should comes with a Aries box for NBN, then it just a simple network cable to your access point.

HFC connection. Just need a bog standard router with VDSL

          HFC isn’t VDSL.

Read a review about this router before pulling the trigger. Seem to be shitty~mediocre product (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/528247#comment-8613572)

I’ll be getting that for my FTTP house as well, I only need a decent internet router (just normal surfing, FB and youtube) without going over $2-300 for a mesh network or a gaming router.

      • Deco M5 deals are posted here all the time. What FTTP speed are you paying for?

  • I was looking at this a couple days ago but ended up going with the TP-Link V600, loving it especially for plex around the house. Strong FTTN performance too. Got it for $188. Obviously depends on whether you want modem/router or just router.

  • would this be better than my old Netcomm n300 nf7 that is sort of playing up and I can't sometimes get good steady signal (video/zoom) upstairs? I am on ozbb 50/20 FTTP. No gaming. Thanks guys :)

      get a used Asus RT-68U on gum-tree for $80 -$100 or a new one - https://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=ac68u&spos…

D-Fend is buggy and coverage isn't the best. What is your price limit?

      • $100 would be good. I dont game but nowadays doing zoom calls and often the video/signal upstairs or in the backyard is poor quality. My NF7 is 5+ yrs old from previous provider. Might go for the secondhand asus as per above, seems to have a great renome :)

Mercusys Halo S12 $89. Minor negative is it's limited to 100 Mbps throughput.

Deco M5 has better coverage and can handle 1000 Mbps throughput if you can stretch an extra $90.

@Twix: thanks mate, will look into those, appreciate your help :)

        • Someone is selling one in the classifieds. You might be able to make a deal with a fellow OzBargainer.

          • +1

@Cousin IT: thanks mate, only checked today, sold now, but thank you for the tip :)

    • Maybe start with the modem that comes with your isp and see how it goes. ASUS In general works great for me, great speed and coverage.

    • If your netcomm's connection with the line is peachy, then go for a Ubiquiti AC Pro to handle your Wifi.
Be hard to find something that performs as well for the price.

  • How would this compare to my AC1900 Netgear Nighthawk router? It does cut out sometimes… I think it's seen better days

    • +1

      Probably no better.

  • Moved to Asus AiMesh and never look back.

I have this router, and annoyingly it drops out a couple of times a day.

It says “the webpage can not be reached”. I need to reset the connection (on computer) to get it working again.

    • Is it just it's wireless that is an issue?

    D-Fens!

Careful! This router may stop working and run amok.

      Great movie!

  • It doesn't look like it has VPN client capabilities.

    • I found having the VPN client on the modem can be a problem. Initially set up my ASUS 86u with VPN client, works great when it test it. 1 login all the devices on the network. Few days later I start getting complaints that some websites refuse connection. So I eventually turn it off at the router and install individual VPN clients on the require devices and turn on/off as needed.

It is a pain, I rather have the VPN client on the router. Not sure if there is a work around.

If you need content filter for the kids, this seems like a pretty darn cheap solution. Why complain about the performance, it's still faster than needed for a simple home internet setup

    • Why would you buy a mediocre product for the use of one feature? When you can get that feature for free online. More info here and here or search for Content Filtering DNS.

  • That's one ugly looking router… looks more like a water tank.

  • Got this, its great, good upgrade over my Archer D9, much better range.
