This sounds A Lot like a sockpuppet

    • Does that mean you think I am a rep from the site?

    • +1

I doubt Affordablelaptops would sockpuppet, they have a pretty good reputation on Whirlpool

That said, this is the normal price for their laptops so I don't think you would consider it a "deal", of course spec to price ratio of this beats high end Asus/MSI etc

Now this sounds like sock puppetting!

        (I kid)

I think your site name is misleading..

Oh well maybe its not a good deal. I dunno I couldn't find any laptops anywhere else with a 2760qm, 6990m, 1080p and 8Gb of ram for under $2000 anywhere else.

Edit: actually yes I did @ logicalblueone.com.au but they charged for delivery so I posted this site instead.

    • DELL XPS 17"
      Full HD Anti glare
8 GB Ram ( upgradable upto 16 GB)
      1.5 TB HDD (7200k rpm , 750 GB * 2)
      Blue ray writer
      2 years onsite warranty
      Geforce GT 555M
Costed me around 1500 dollars with 30% deal last month. Discount is not available now, but Dell have such discounts after every 2-3 months.

Secondly this is standard price on metabox for a 17".

Dell win on every other components besides the Gfx card (for the price). Depends what you really need the laptop for.

        GT555M to run BF3? Meh.
        560M Gtx? Maybe.

But again, not everyone buy a laptop with i7, fullHD screen, good gfx to play BF3. They use that to go on Facebook, check out bargains at ozbargain etc.

        • -1

I played bf3 on 555m and it was working fine

Asus G74 on Ebay goes for ~$1500 with 12-16GB of RAM (I forgot which), i7 and GTX 560m. and the design is miles ahead of the metabox

    • +2

Yeah, but you may want to look at the dealer's reputation in Whirlpool (seems like they're selling refurbished units as new). Check it out.

And the ASUS one comes with glossy screen, whilst you can customise this with matte one (to some people, this matters)

This metabox will probably cost 5 grand with all the options selected. There have been much better deals from Dell.

    Not really a bargain here.

or if you want to go with GTX485 for $1798

Mmm… slightly off topic, but after specing up a P170HM to match roughly the Alienware m17x, the price comes out at $3,144.00 (assuming Alienware is non-matte screen). The Alienware m17x is $3,399. However, if you're used to using the 13% coupon code (and knowing you're on OzBargain reading this, I'd be remarkably surprised if you didn't!), the price comes down $2,962.98 - quite a saving indeed.

Hey mate, yeah fair enough. I wasn't trying to get the best of the best when deciding which laptop to get. I actually posted this before buying one myself and I ended up going with the smaller P150HMA which should give me a pretty decent gaming laptop for $1779. In the end I just felt like I was getting more bang for my buck by stepping back to 15.6".

Also figured that if I decide I want Bluray on it I will just remove the dvd drive myself (and maybe sell it) and buy a Bluray drive at MSY or wherever I find a bargain. Same goes for the RAM. According to their reps on whirlpool its ok to change parts yourself, it doesn't void your warranty. They just say that if you plan on upgrading the gpu or cpu they'd prefer you to send it back to them to do so you don't kill it.

      • Yeah, don't get me wrong - I like the idea of removing parts (I was considering the very same before I ended up going for a Lenovo T520) that you don't need to lower the price, I'm just unsure of the brand. There are some good reviews for the laptop but very few and far, and generally not even for the same model. There are alot of negative reviews though, but I wouldn't take them with a grain of salt simply because they start either arguing over the weight, blandness (which scores points in my book anyway) and have never "really" owned one (and thus comparing the spec and overall look and feel to the rest).

I'd be interested to hear your views on the laptop when you get it and start using it. At the moment, my only feasible alternative to the ThinkPad series (which has served me well since the 390E (Pentium II)) would be a MacBook Pro with the aluminium shell, or perhaps even the Acer Ethos 8950 (although the 17" would kill me). The rest seem to be built so cheap these days that I'd have one destroyed in about 5 minutes at home… particularly if one of the dogs decides to surf another laptop down the couch arm onto the floor. >.<
