  • well 240hz ips is gone, 8core cpu is gone…

  • Is it worthwhile getting the 2-year premium support (costs $200)?

    • +2

Absolutely YES, it will pay for itself years down the road
Or put it this way 10% total cost to insure for total 3yrs

      • Sorry stupid question but when can you use this and what does this do?

Like I heard that warranty doesn't cover everything especially if you open it up to do upgrades yourself etc so what is the warranty for mainly sorry just wanted to get some really straightforward answers.

        • You can do RAM or a HDD
If the motherboard/graphics dies from heat

  • Everything looks pretty good except for the display for 17" - not bad but not that good either.

  • +2

Time Spy benchmark, result is 7198

  • +11

Recieved my unit today (ordered before eBay deal).

    Can confirm the following:

    1. This is a full-fat 2070 Mobile with a boost clock of 1455MHz (Max Q has maximum boost of up to 1305 MHz) so this question can be laid to rest

    2. There is a spare M.2 drive for expansion if you need to add another storage drive (no 2.5" bay as this has the 97Wh battery)

    3. It is BIG and HEAVY but it is perfectly portable and i don't think i will have many issues taking it to the few places i have planned.

If you have any questions, please ask, i'm happy to help perspective buyers.

    • Does the screen look washed out?

Are you able to enable gsync?

      • +2

Screen looks great (by my standards) and has good colour representation. Dell tend to use good displays and this is no expection.

No g-sync on this model which sucks (unless using an external g-sync display). This is the only major downside for me as it really makes you choose performance for 144hz with no tearing or graphics quality.

Overall, an amazing deal for these times.

      • My G5 SE looked washed out compared to my XPS 15, at first i thought there was something wrong with my unit, but it looks like that's just the type of screen they use for gaming laptops.

        • I had the G5 SE before, the screen and colour on this G7 is so much better.

          • @kml22: 4600H with the 60Hz screen? I have the 144Hz one on my SE and the specs look the same as the screen on the G7, so will see I guess.

            • @F1ProjectOne: Yes the 4600H and 60hz screen, have to return the laptop because it keeps on black screen and rebooted itself.

              • @kml22: I find it interesting that the 4600H from the ~$1300 deal all seemed to be plagued with these kind of issues while the 4800H from the $1584 deal seem to be totally fine. Mine is running well while gaming.

    • Is RAM expandable ?

      • Yes it is, 2 slots, up to 32gb

    • How loud is it under full load?

      • +3

Very loud, use headphones. Just remember this is an i7 and a 2070 in a laptop. Loud is good, you need it for this kind of perfomance.

        • Thanks mate, only going to be used for the occasional game.
How is the battery? had a chance to see what sorta life you can get out of it yet? (mainly just for basic use, not gaming use, i wont game on battery)

          • +1

@j-scrizz: I would love to provide long term experience but at this stage i have just stated using it.

The best way i can estimate it for you is, imagine this: i had an XPS 13 with a 56 Wh battery which lasted aroun 6-8 hours with high screen brightness on Intel graphics. This laptop has the larger screen but also has a 97 Wh battery. By guestimation, using the Intel graphics mode, it would last close to 5+ hours with basic use.

        • Mate, do you know what temp the CPU gets up to when gaming using the "Cool" profile?

    • Hi Mate,

      I plan on hooking this up to a 1440p - 2K monitor.
Do you think it will run most games at high/ultra settings at that resolution?

      Thanks

      • +2

Yes it should run most at high/ultra but don't expect much more than 60fps. Just google 2070 mobile/i7 benchmarks. This will pretty much be the same.

        • Legend! Thanks mate.

Also, Bit of a noob but will this kind of SSD fit? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/554840

512GB is far too small for my library of games, I do have an external WD My Passport SSD i can hook up via USB C but not sure if speed will be impacted.

    • How's battery life for general use?

    • Is the lid metal or plastic? Thanks.

    • How long did delivery take from Dell?

      • +1

It shoudl take about 2 weeks or less. My G5 SE took 17 days from China. This laptop seems to be stored in Sydney?

    • is it a full m.2 spare drive? or do we have to buy a small HDD?

      will this one fit?

      https://www.centrecom.com.au/kingston-1tb-a2000-sa2000m81000…

      • +1

        This one should definitely fit

    • After a few more days with it mate, have you had a chance to game on it? Any thermal issues? From the limited info on the internet their seems to be some issues (though this was the american model)
any info would be appreciated :)

      • +1

It definitely gets loud, so be prepared for that. Thermals are OK. When playing COD at full quality and high fps, the gpu sits at about 85c. No thermal throttling from what i've experienced but i feel that it gets just enough cooling. What issues did you find?

        • Thanks for the reply mate, just reading about FPS drop issues due to thermal problems from some youtube videos. Thats good news you haven't had any of those issues.

  • how long is this deal on for?

    • Sale lasts a week, but the listing shows 90% sold with 180 units, so possibly not for long! It did, however, sell out yesterday and they added more, so who knows.

      • Thanks, ordered one :D

      • How do you see how much % is sold out?

        • not sure? maybe ebay changes things as it sees fit?

          says 234 sold so far?

  • +8

The ebay listing has now been updated to show GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 8GB GDDR6 Max P

    • +1

      Good spot.

100% Official now guys. We get the full 2070. Super great bargain now.

    • +3

I was happy to take it either way, with the hope of max P. Now it's official it's a bloody ripper of a deal. I don't reckon anything will come close to this spec and pricing. So glad I didn't buy a gaming rig 2 weeks ago.

  • Is this overkill for video editing and no gaming?

    • Better off with the ryzen 4800H for video editing.

      • Because it outperforms the i7-10750H?

        • Yes it does, specially for things like video editing.

  • Also the delivery time has been updated. Bit of a longer wait now.

Estimated between Thu. 27 Aug. and Fri. 4 Sep.

    • Ahh stuff that, rather wait for the new lenovos and make a decision, as that should wrap up most ryzen 4800h models for this year.

      • +1

Lenovo will be nowhere close to this price I believe. Best deal I have seen was $1600 for a 4800H with a 1650 or 1650 Ti. Then it increases exponentially if you select better screen or GPUs. If main usage is gaming, CPUs don't matter as much and this is the better deal. Could be another story for video editing.

        • I do agree, this is a fantastic deal actually.
You're right lenovo will be easily $500-$600 more.

Only issue will be for me is thermals and weight.

The G7 are far too heavy IMHO aside from the fact I just want throw AMD some love given the new architecture and power draw benefits.

    • i got 27 August and 7 September, so times are blowing out a lil haha!

  • +1

Hi Guys - Just purchased one with 3yrs warranty for $2211. Just message Dell via ebay listing and ask for a custom listing that includes the extended warranty your after. They sent me a custom listing within 24 hours. Used this listing and added the discount code. All good can't wait for this beast.

    • This is what I needed - I've been on live chat on the Dell website and the rep told me I can only add warranty after.

  • +1

Saw 4 left in stock 5 minutes ago and it keeps dropping. Logged in and had to change to another credit card for payment. Error. Sold out!

    Hope Dell they restocks it.

    • +2

10 more just been added due to some cancellation.

      • Thanks but I missed it again. Fell asleep at 8:30 and woke up at 1am only to find that the 10 restocks sold out between 9pm and 10pm.

  • This happened a few days ago where they ran out of stock. Hang in there they should restock the eBay listing shortly is my guess.

  • Now it has been established its a GTX 2070 Max-P

    This article is interesting.
    quote
"Max-P is not an official Nvidia term like Max-Q, but laptop manufacturers sometimes use it anyway. It stands for “max performance,” and was made up to identify non-Max-Q laptops. A laptop with a GeForce RTX 2070 Super mobile chip that uses the full 115W would be a “Max-P” laptop"
"Full-power mobile GPUs will often be found in 17" laptops, whereas 15" laptops are more likely to go the Max-Q route."

    https://www.pcgamer.com/au/whats-the-difference-between-gefo….

What is the Charger with this laptop?

    • +1

A massive 240w supply. Its about 50% bigger than my iPhone 11 Pro Max!!

      • oh hell.

        • It is thin and not too heavy though so sorry i sounded so extreme haha

      • Hi, have you tried to open the back cover of the laptop? It looks like there are 4 outlets but on the few CGI pictures of the internals I have seen there seems to only be 3 heatsinks, so this is weird…

        • I have opened it up - GPU has two outlets and CPU has 1. CPU also has a slightly smaller fan.

  • Did anyone try to open the back cover of the laptop? It looks like there are 4 outlets but on the few CGI pictures of the internals I have seen there seems to only be 3 heatsinks, so this is weird…

    • thermal performance won be good on this laptop, otherwise no one buy alienware

  • Ten more back in stock just now

  • Rookie question, do any laptops still have CD-RW and/or DVD-RW? Or can you buy something to plug in for us apparent dinosaurs? ;)

    • Passing by to say no, not integrated - best bet is to get a portable optical drive like this.

  • Would this drive be a good choice for the g7 2nd slot?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/554955#comment-9068162

Use will be for file and game storage.

If not, please recommend me a suitable drive.

    • +1

Yes that is a good choice I am considering this as well for the 2nd m.2 slot.

  • I can confirm that it's back in stock at the moment - just pulled the trigger on one

  • Frustrating. I sent them a message hours ago asking for a link with warranty as it says to do. No reply and they're sold out again. Argh.

    • shoulda bought it. standard warranty is fine

      • Indeed. Hindsight and all that ;(

  • +3

Interesting to see that there is 210 upvote on this listing and Dell sold 210 G7 :)

  • Well couldnt find any current deals on 2tb NVMe drives. So i went ahead and ordered this one for $411.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B0829DZH2W/ref=ya_aw_od_pi…

150 reviews and 5 star rating. A bit of googling suggests its a decent drive although personally I had never heard of the brand before. Was tempted to grab 2 and update the one it comes with. But the investment was too big considering I personally havent heard of the brand.

    • It is a very unknown brand but I watched a ssd m.2 nvme video comparing a bunch of ssds from the high premiums to stuff like sabrent rockets and what I barely remember was the sabrent rocket actually performing really good for the money compared to like Samsung pros which I think was top overall but the rockets kept up pretty tightly but I think it does get cheaper but not sure have not really looked into their prices much was just benchmark binge watching one boring afternoon.

  • +1

I spoke with dell on the chat about adding an additional ssd

I asked them if I am allowed to install it without voiding the warranty. They said no it has to be a dell technician. I said ok, how do we go about organising that. They said sorry this cannot be arranged…

  • +4

    Back in stock

    • yep nows our chance!

    • Pulled the trigger. I was about to finish work and checked for one last time and saw 10 in stock again. Would have missed out for the third time had I took the 1 hour commute home.

More than 10 available and 6 already sold within 10 minutes.

      • bought one myself as well :)

  • I got one, thanks OP

Is it best to buy an additional power cord from dell?

Or to source a cheap one on eBay?

    Thanks

    • All power bricks are the same just need to get the same specs as the original all the specs but obviously less chance of getting the wrong one from Dell but pricier.
