Id love to give this a + but the X570 TUF has been on special at $299 quite regularly so a B550 at that price point i wouldn't recommend to anyone

That's not mATX though…. there's really not many x570 mATX options

This is a good value option for those needing mATX & AX WiFi. Also it's almost $50 less and comes with a free copy of Doom.

  • Wouldn't you just get the B550M Mortar for $239 at SE? It's arguably a better board and it has an M.2 E-key. There's even one with Wi-Fi built in.

    • Maybe, if you're sure you'll never want to use on board graphics. The B550M Mortar seems to be the only B550 board I've seen that has HDMI 1.4 rather than 2.1.

      • WTF priorities! 2.5 gig lan but HDMI 1.4?!

        • At some point you may want to turn it into a HTPC at which point you may wish you had HDMI 2.1 on that old motherboard.

    • Think that deal is about $250 if you include shipping costs, and that's without the WiFi. Also does not include the Doom promotion.

      • The Mortar gives you a $30-$50 USD Steam code depending on what CPU you buy it with.

B550 without a PCI-E 4.0 slot? Not exactly a deal at that price then. And before "there's hardly anything that uses 4.0" why wouldn't you just get another B550 with that, or a 450, because the PCIE 4.0 slot is the only real change between 450 to 550.

Edit: The board does indeed have PCI-E 4.0 and it also has USB 3.2 ports, rather than 6x USB2 listed in the comments.

JFYI B550 has PCIe 3.0 from the chipset, PCIe 4.0 from the CPU. That's what makes these cheaper than X570, as the chipset is less complex and thus easier to produce. There are potentially 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU, but they are utilised for various things like M.2 NVMe drives (usually 4x lanes to the M.2 slot). Most boards should support 16x PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU to the first slot, or two 8x lanes to two PCIe slots. Some also offer multiple M.2 NVMe slots, where they share lanes with the PCIe expansion card slots. If M.2 sockets are hung off the PCIe chipset they will suffer from additional latency, so it pays to investigate how the manufacturer has hung everything together.

Of course, in order to get PCIe 4.0, it also depends on the CPU. If you drop the wrong CPU in there no amount of wishful magic is going to give you PCIe 4.0, so make sure you understand the implications of your component selection prior to purchase. Also be aware that B550 is not an upgrade path for 2nd gen Ryzen, those CPUs won't work.

  • Well don't need PCIE4, B450 only $170. - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-TUF-B450M-PLUS-GAMING-AMD-M…
