Easy to get started with a ready-to-use TRÅDFRI smart kit which contains the wireless dimmer and 1 E27 LED light bulb (large base) with warm-white light (2.700K).
This kit is already pre-paired, so all you have to do is screw the light source into the lamp socket and then start using your smart lighting.
Default luminous flux: 806 lm
Default colour temperature: 2700 K
Power: 8.9 W
Standby power consumption: 0.5W.

I wanted a few more of the $11.99 dimmer switches and found a Tradfri smart bulb bundled for an extra $3 :)

Requires Zigbee hub. Ikea or otherwise.
I have these working with home assistant and a CC2531 zigbee dongle.

NOTE this dongle does need to be flashed with the latest firmware before it will work properly with these switches.

Dimmer switch is a rocker type.
Top Half - Press for On, Hold for increase brightness.
Bottom Half - Press for Off, Hold for Dim
Note - For home assistant see https://notenoughtech.com/home-automation/ikea-tradfri-wirel…

  • Good deal sucks bulb is warm white only.

Anyone have experience linking to Philips hue bridge and whether the ikea stuff caused problems?

    • No issues here. Had both IKEA and Hue connected to my Hue hub without any issues

    • Works fine once conmected but the syncing process can be really frustrating. You have to flick the lights on and off a number of times at exactly the right speed

    • I tried and gave up. Maybe I had a dodgy bulb or maybe I wasn't doing it right.

      • +1

I used the app iConnectHue to add the light and it took a second to pair, even faster the Philips Hue to Hue Hub, no problem with dimmer as well.

The light from this bundle is quite yellow.

The deal seems to be a normal price, it's there for last 2 month or so

    • actually last 6-12 months.

      • Yes hardly a deal when this is the normal price. It's a good price for the combo (the switch by itself is about $12) but not a deal.

  • +1

Its been at this price since long.

  • Anyone able to connect tradfri lights to Xiaomi gateway v2? Keep getting stuck at the reset light phase…

  • Are you telling me I could potentially get rid of my Xiaomi Gateway for $2.50 with that dongle?

    • Yes but you’d need a PC to plug it into running all the time and software emulating a bridge.

      • Or in a Raspberry Pi running home assistant?

        • I use a RaspBee (similar to what you linked too but attaches via GPIO) with Home Assistant. I have to use the RaspBee software (some German thing, I forgot what it’s called) to expose and link the ZigBee accessories (Philips Hue) to Home Assistant.

        • If you going to use home assistant as only main hub, I would suggest upgrading it to intel nuc or save up for one. Much quicker automation and stable and smoother web gui. Plus it allow you run other addons and services one on device.

          • @[Deactivated]: Never had an issue with automation or UI on the pi so far. Been running for over a year. But I have considered moving it over to my QNAP… Just haven't gotten round to it.

            • +1

@NigelTufnel: I mean, personally same but I do find loading of web gui much faster on intel nuc compare to raspberry pi. Well that depends how many elements you have installed and setup.

              • @[Deactivated]: For Home Assistant, one big performance improvement is to move the database backend to another x86 computer. The default database SQLite and the microSD memory card is a major bottleneck. The core execution on Pi actually runs with reasonable speed.

But of course if there is already another x86 computer running 24/7 then might as well run HA on the same box with virtualisation.

          • @[Deactivated]: Home Assistant seriously improved the speed in versions 111..113 .

OP says you need a hub and you can use one but don't need one if you just want to use them as stand alone remote controlled lights like I did.

I got a pair when they were $12 to replace the hard wired switch for the two lights in my front living room. That room has only one light switch and stupidly it's by the front door so from my kitchen/living area you would have to walk through the front room to the entrance foyer just to get to the light switch. Most rooms like this would also have a switch on the wall at the entrance to the room from the living area of the house and it would have cost me 100s to get an electrician to install one.

So I put two of these IKEA kits in for under 30 bucks, paired the switches to BOTH bulbs, and put the switches on both sides of the room where they should have been all along. Now the two ceiling lights go on and off from either side of the room and have dimmers as a bonus. Being able to grab a switch off the wall and take it to a lounge chair is another handy bonus.

  • Ikea Perth has a different kind of "dimmer kit": 1000 lumen E27 lamp plus round twisting dimmer.
Not as good as the rocker switch, to me, but brighter bulb.

The yellow ones are only $10 the pair ($15 for white switch). 903.569.44 (not on website)
Also Zigbee, bulb pairs to Hue bridge with touchlink. Any way to link the dimmer switch to Hue bridge?

Motion sensor is reduced to $12.50,

E14 400 lumen is half price at $7.50

How to pair Ikea tradfri bulbs and remotes to Hue bridge, has worked well for me - https://redsilico.com/blog/ikea-tradri-remote-with-hue-hub

      • Thanks ndenham.

So the Ikea remotes cannot be connected to the Hue app, and so Google etc, but only talk directly to the bulb?
Which means I can use both voice control, and physical dimmer switch on the same bulb. (got that working!)

But that is not so good for the motion sensor, as I'd like to add some smarts, e.g. to do different things depending on the time of day.

        • Yeah it's never been clear to me but my understanding is that the dimmer doesn't really talk to the hub after you pair it. I think you pair it to the hub so that when you pair it with the bulbs they can remain paired to the hub.

I haven't used the Tradfri motion sensor because the reviews of them were relatively poor. I've had better luck with the Hue ones (and the smart things one).
