I don't see a bargain - just self promotion. That price is about $20 more expensive than the Wavlink one that often gets posted.

A UGREEN version with a similar feature set can be had for $62.99 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Charging-Ethernet-Compatibl…

    • There certainly are cheaper brands available, I never said we had the cheapest or best around, just one of the better ones and cheaper than we've been able to find for this exact model elsewhere. We're sorry you don't feel it's a bargain offer, but you're entitled to your opinion on the matter same as anyone.

How do you qualify yours is better?

        • +1

For starters, it's StarTech - they've been around for the better part of 3 decades. While I can't vouch for this specific item or the seller in question, I can vouch for their quality in other StarTech adaptors I have used in the past.

        • StarTech are a well known and, in our experience, very reliable brand that's been in business for over 30 years. It's a brand we trust to sell to multiple clients. StarTech have always provided excellent service for us in the event of a failure or issue with a product as well.

I don't think I can really add more than that as I'm an employee so any particular benefits i may tout, you and others are more than likely to ( quite fairly ) view as biased to try and make the sale. All i can do is encourage you to look into StarTech and the item in question, check reviews for it and the like. If it's for you then it's for you, if it's not then I'm sorry we couldn't help you this time around!

Our company has been purchasing and using that exact U-green model for a couple of years now. Best investment we've made and we have around 2,000 MACS.

I've also been using the UGreen dock as well - have three. Well, I bought two, and then when one of them seemed to overheat randomly, UGreen were quick to send me another one without much issue. I appreciated that.

  • how is this better than the ones on Amazon?

    • No idea, I've never used the ones from amazon so i can't make a fair comparison, and to attempt to would be unfair and biased of me.

      • personally, I would choose either one of those $30 ones from Amazon or if you want better quality, just bite the bullet I did and buy a WD19TB or similar

TBF a lot of those don’t provide power.

I'm in the market for something similar and this one is not a bargain, and barely seems like a discount…

Startech stuff is usually good but seeing as the OP and even the picture of the box doesn’t even say how much power is delivered and max throughput is 5GB/S I would say no at this price.

an oversight on my part in the listing, thank you for bringing it to my attention, just straight up forgot about the limit on how much it can pass through. I have now fixed the original ebay listing and my post here to reflect the new information. It's a 60W Max.

If you have a laptop that has a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) compatible port and you want a dock for it, I highly recommend you take care to carefully evaluate your options and look for a quality offering, rather than focusing on the cheapest option.

Current (2020) laptops have far broader PD compatibility than older generations - go back just two or three years and many PD certified devices would only accept power from a tiny number of hubs/docks (usually only those from the same brand). For example, the Dell D6000 'universal' USB-C dock actually only works with (ie provides power to) a small number of third party laptops. I know because we purchased a couple and tried them on a range of laptops, most of which wouldn't charge from it.

It's also important to thoroughly test any USB hub or dock to ensure that it handles connected devices and power correctly - I have spent literally thousands of dollars over the past two decades testing and qualifying USB hubs, docks and PCIe adapters. Most aren't capable of providing full speed throughput and the majority aren't even reliable (they drop out, disconnect and flat out stop working as soon as you push them too hard). If you want to test devices like this for yourselves, get a good high-speed USB flash drive or SSD (I can usually make most cheap hubs fall over just using my SanDisk Extreme Pro), make sure you can get reliable, repeatable performance reading and writing large sequential files (I often use ISO's or movie files) to and from your laptop or PC, then see if you can hit the same throughput connected to the hub/dock. Connect a number of external USB HDD's to various ports, then read and write to them at the same time - if there's a weakness in the power circuitry you'll soon discover it.

I personally now have the Targus DOCK180AUZ (https://au.targus.com/products/usb-c-universal-dv4k-docking-…) which cost around $300, but is usually at least $50 more at retail. That's a lot more than entry-level USB-C hubs, even with charging, but I needed a robust device that would ensure compatibility and reliability for my laptop connecting to one of my desktop systems with a 4K monitor, keyboard, mouse, network and a few other peripherals. After trying a number of USB-C PD devices, the Targus dock has been perfect with my Lifebook U939.

I would take Startech gear over UGREEN every day of the week. UGREEN isn't a particularly poor brand (coughBelkincough), but Startech is very reliable. It's like Kia vs Honda. Personally I am a bit disappointed by how much Startech stuff is in Australia - it's nothing like that expensive in the USA, but it costs way too much to ship it over most of the time. Mind you, I could say the same for most IT products - we get royally screwed by importers and national distributors here (there's basically a 30-40% markup from greedy Australians who feel entitled to charge insane margins just because they move product from one place to another). The companies themselves don't charge Australian buyers any more than any other distributors, we just have a less competitive market so margins are fatter than is reasonable.

Anyway, be careful, test with your specific device to ensure compatibility, and run it through its paces to ensure it won't fall over the first time you expect it to do some heavy lifting.

Does not seem to be a bargain to me. A retailer could say anything about themselves but in the end, the only thing we care about is price and quality. At this price point, there are many other options.

It’s bizarre to have negs because it’s compared to a different brand. If you could get the same StarTech for $79 shipped elsewhere, sure.

    Don’t upvote, but why neg?

    • +2

I kinda agree, if it was a bad product, bad seller or bad price (others sell the same for less) then by all means, neg. But not when comparing apple with orange. It's like someone posting a Samsung Note 10 for 30% less than market price, and people saying it's a bad deal because they can get some Redmi/Dooge/Udmigi Android phones for 1/3 of the price…

  • Does this do HDMI 4K@30Hz or 4K@60Hz?
