Hi Everyone,

Well after Apple's disappointing event (my opinion only - had been waiting for this for like 6 mths), I have now come to the final gut wrenching realisation that there will be no iPhone5 line to go stand in.

If your like me with a phone replacement required, this has meant alternatives now need to be investigated.

Android have some good phones, but the smart side won't work in many enterprise environments.

Microsoft set minimum spec's on their hardware requirements for Win7Phone, so many phones are almost identical. I have done quite a bit of research on the Optimus7, Ominia7, HTC7 Trophy, Mozart, HD7, Xperia X10 + numerous others. All have pro's & con's, but this is the best deal I have seen on a new phone in this range (Aussie a-tick approved as well).

I found this phone after checking their recent Galaxy S2 deal & Mobile City have offered free postage on this phone

Brings this deal under the magic $300 mark.

Having found Win8 //build/ quite useable, I am going to take this opportunity to do some enterprise testing on Win mobile

& yes, the 4S is what it is.

Windows 7 Mango has been nothing but praise, which is what was after WP7. I don't see your point.

        • +20

I don't like modifying systems that aren't open source. Go ahead and modify Android because that is open-source, but Windows Phone 7 isn't open-sourced so I don't see why the last point is so huge.

I mean Apple do it themselves. With every update it either becomes harder to jailbreak and modify the iPhone or renders previous methods obselete, so does that mean Apple should also deserve commercial failure?

        • +18

So Apple is allowed to do it but Microsoft isn't allowed to do it, right? So all operating systems besides iOS should be open-source right? No other company besides Apple has the magical power to create a non-opensourced system? So just because Microsoft wants to earn money they are evil? There are no doubt similarities to Apple, but competition is good. Your pretty much saying that Apple should be a monopoly and everything else should be like Android.

They are allowed to restrict stuff because they created the system. Unless your Bill Gates or a major stockholder you can't do anything about it. And if you want Microsoft to fail because its not open sourced, you can't just say Apple gets a special exclusion.

        • +8

If it's about copying Apple, then when do you put modification as your reason why they deserve commercial failure and not because they copy Apple? You just changed your answer!

A non-monopolised app store and no restrictions = open source, so if you say that open source isn't what you mean, that means you just have a pet peeve with Microsoft copying Apple. And that is not a reason for wishing commercial failure on Microsoft.

        I love mangoes. Delicious!

        • me too :P

    • +1

      Good deal!

    • Very narrow-minded.

  • +1

Wow, nice deal. I wanted this last November, but it was as expensive as an iP4 and exclusive to Optus :/ nty.

I liked this over all other Win7 phones simply because it had physical clicking home/back/search buttons, rather than capacitive ones which supposedly were very easy to accidentally press while gaming. All other specs on Win7 phones yes are pretty much identical so there's not much choice to be made between them, and this is a good option.

On bloatware, this was one of the very good effects of the restrictions MS made - minimal bloatware was allowed. I'm pretty sure all of it has to be deletable as per the guidelines, so you should be able to get rid of any you don't like. Not sure if that's reality though, didn't look into them much after release since I didn't get one :P

  • +1

Very good deal. If you're new to Windows Phone 7 and have some questions head over to http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/123?g=136 and read through some threads.

This LG handset has DLNA and physical buttons which separate it from it's competitors. And unlike Android, the hardware requirements are very stringent and this handset will be nearly identical to all other gen-1 Windows Phone devices.

    • +2

The frustration of capacative buttons cannot possibly be overstated. Physical buttons = win.

      • I initially found typing on a capacitive screen pretty frustrating but over time, I've personally found it quicker than typing using physical buttons.

Any idea what's it's like to develop for WP7? I've always been interested in it and having a "test phone" for $289 seems reasonable.

        • There's two main ways to do it: Silverlight and XNA. I have no idea how to use Silverlight but XNA was a pleasure to work with. If you have any experience using VB.NET or C# it's really easy to pick up. The problem is the emulator is pretty average to work with (same issue with Android and iOS SDKs) and the ChevronWP7 developer unlock method has been nerfed in the Mango update so you'll need to either use it without updating (kinda pointless), pay $99 for a developer account just to test your applications on your phone (to my mind, unreasonable) or hope someone comes up with a new unlock method.

I you just want a cheap test phone, pick up one of the early models like the HTC Trophy off eBay - you can get one for under $100 and it should give you a good feel of what it's like to work with, plus it's cheap enough that as long as you're not tempted to use it as an actual phone it won't matter that you don't update it to Mango.

        • +4

Quite easy to develop for with a lot of resources online as with all platforms to help you out. If you are a University student or have an .edu e-mail address you can sign up at www.dreamspark.com for a student developer account which will 'developer unlock' your phone and allow you to sideload apps and play with some neat homebrew features they've come up with at XDA.

        • +1

Some of the cross platform solutions now support WP7 eg phonegap and rhomobile.

        • thx cyss, had forgotten about dreamspark, more testing, yay

  • +2

the free shipping code for E900 valid till 16/10/2011, while stock last.

    • thx mobi, wasn't sure

  • I got my daughter one of these phones from Optus on a 12 month plan at $30 per month. Works out to around $360 and includes $180 of calls/text + 200mb of data. She's happy with it, just watching the data to see if I have spend the extra $5 per month for an extra 500mb.

    • Thx Matt, always good to hear real world use. Sounds like a good deal for a new plan.
While it's still M$, my interest is that not many people have these, so I need to know more info on them. I guess because the iPhone has been so dominant.
Always interesting buying tech. With icecream sandwich & Win8 out by the time she is off the plan, it will be a whole new set to look at.
Dual core will be standard in the value range by then and much of web consumption be done mobile rather than PC. I would just get the extra 500mb now :)
Did you get DLNA setup ?
With M$ dropping Zune MP3 devices, will be interesting to see if mobiles are all we now want to listen to music. I know I am depressed with Apples touch announcement.

    • I can't see LG Optimus on Optus site? Are you referring to the Samsung Omnia 7? http://www.optus.com.au/store/phone/samsung_omnia_7

  • +3

Windows Phone 7 Mango is so good! Reccommended for everyone, its awesome!

    • Will let you know EOW :)

but certainly everything I came across says it's quite useable, with enough tricks to have some fun with
(eg. multiple email tiles on home screen, diff pic setup, Office 365 & Skydrive integration, DLNA (though no stereo speakers), XBOX integration, XBOX TV control, XBL access, XBL live chats from phone, Skype (who owns that again), web searching direct from external phone button, & all the obvious, as it will need to be, continuous Social Networking integration upgrades.

    • Have u got Mango on this phone already ? Am still waiting for update…
Edit: Think I've got it - About, Software: Windows Phone 7.5
Was confused as was looking at OS version: 7.10.xxx and expected to see 7.5 there.

  • +2

I have been using this phone since Feb, can't praise it enough. I cannot express enough how great it is to have a physical camera button, and hardware buttons on the front mean no accidental Bing screen during a heated game of fruit ninja.

    • Edit: replied to wrong comment

    • Me too

is mango update available for this phone. currently using Galaxy S2 but i like OS7 and for under 300 might pick one up.

    • Mango update is definitely available for this phone

    • When Mango was officially released, I didn't want to wait for this phone to get the Mango update. So I update the phone to a Mango beta version which enables me to get the update to final Mango immediately. All within 1 hour to perform 3-4 updates to reach official Mango. Just Google and you will definitely find the steps.

Very good deal. A little thing to consider is the lack of front facing camera. Which makes all video call apps useless… :(

    • hrmmm, that's's going to make my Skype testing pretty sad. I'm sure I have a mirror around here somewhere.

    • Gen 2 phones should all have a front facing camera. Which start selling this/next month.

  • A colleague told me about this phone. He raved about Windows Phone 7. I am concerned about Adreno 200 as the GPU (kinda old). Since I bought Acer Liquid, I cannot buy this phone. Really tempted to get a phone running Windows Phone 7. Oh well…

  • +1

Imo your better off going for a HTC HD2, you basically the same specs except you can run Windows Mobile 6.5/Windows Phone 7(and 7.5), Android 2.3.7(latest) or even Ubuntu (possibly MeeGo).

    Comparison:
    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=2957&idPhone2=…

    • Yeah… HD2 pretty much can run anything…

    • Thanks for the comparo parker, looks like a beast (though it still has the same CPU/GPU combo).
Have you found many places selling for under double what the Optimus 7 costs.
I looked at the HD7 but couldn't find it in the cheaper pricing.

  • Lack of xvid support rules this phone out for me :(

  • +2

Great price for a great phone.
I got the LG Optus 7 from Optus a few months ago, and enjoying it even more with Mango.

  • +3

I've had an Omnia 7 for almost a year now and I love the OS. Everything works really smoothly and logically, and the social networking integration is perfect.

  • +2

Another WP7 user here, recently ditched Android :)

  • +2

Yeah I love the concept of android opensource, no rules. But the phones suffer for it. I like the iOS handsets because everything works well, I don't have to worry about memory management or background tasks killing my battery life.
Android is all power no control. I have played with this handset and liked it a lot, it's signs Microsoft are taking the mobile platform seriously, when win8 comes out I may get a win phone as a backup but I am a apple fanboi and yes I will be lining up for a i4s

  • +2

I've recently just gone back to my Optimus 7 after winning a SSG2. I was missing WP7 when using Android and upon the release of Mango I've gone back and no regrets. After owning IOS, Android and WP7 phones I'd have to say that WP7 is my favourite.

The Pros of WP7 over IOS and Android:
    * It's the best looking
    * It's the most intuative
    * It's the quickest, smoothest and most reliable

    The Negs of WP7:
    * No turn by turn voice navigation at the moment.
    * Not as many apps (thought nowadaways it has most of the major apps that I want i.e Trip View, bank apps, RWC11 etc)
    * The apps are more expensive than Android apps, similar to IOS

In terms of the pros of the actual phone:
    * Most ergonomic phone I've owned. The combination of metal and rubber gives it a solid, sturdy feel. The 3.8" is perfect for fitting in the hand.
    * Physical navigation and camera button.
    * One of the quickest WP7 available right now, though the new generation is about to be released.
    * One of the few WP7 available with 16gb memory. Once again the new generation are about to be released though I don't believe any of them will have more than 16gb (to be stood corrected).

    The Negs of the Phone:
    * No front facing camera.
    * Main camera is poor compared to SSG2, Omnia7, Iphone4 etc.
    * Screen is good though not up to the standard of AMOLED or Iphone 4 screen.
    * Batter is average, requires recharging every day.

So for $289 I personally think it's a great buy. Overall I rate it over SSG2 and IPhone 4, I'm sure many would disagree. The main thing that's stopping it from dominating is it's screen and camera. For the price however, you can't go wrong.

    • Awesome stuff.
Thx for taking the time to write that up sput.
I guess I am most keen to see apps (considering I have had ios for over 2.5 yrs & android for a while now) & enterprise integration.
Looks like getting The Harvest is a given, any other Starcraft sci-fi Diablo style games ?

  • ah its good to see even WP7 has a few fanboys in the mix

i used to own a HTC trophy and mozart but couldnt stand how locked down WP7 was. no multi-tasking, no flash support, no removable memory, it was like i was in an iphone-nightmare but without the app store (thankfully, it was also without itunes too).

to me, it will be android all the way until the remainder of the market secedes to one OS. nokia's meego would have been in the mix were they not killing it off for the inevitable failure that will be WP7 (all the restrictions of apple, but without any of the social status that draws people to the iphone in the first place).

    • The mango update for WP now has multitasking along with 500 other odd features. Flash won't be on it, HTML5 seems to be the way to go now.

Hey folks - make sure you check out my Blog - http://wpdownunder.com - It's the Number 1 dedicated Aussie site for News, Tips, Reviews info for on Australian Windows Phone 7

This deal is pretty damn good. First time a WP7 handset has been under the $300 mark unlocked from memory. Just make note that GEN 2 handsets will be out in the next 4-12 weeks (including Nokia's WP7 debut).

    Extra features in GEN2 may include;
    - Extra memory
    - Tethering Support
    - Gyroscope sensor
    - Compass sensor
    - Better Cameras

However, this handset does have DLNA (BONUS) and Mango (latest, greatest WP7 update) is awesome and free to update!

    Cheers.

  • sputnik above summarised this phone well - this is a great deal for a 16GB wp7 phone - my wife has one and compared to Mozart and Samsung we have in our house it rates highly (all WP7 here…)
