Holding out for the 27" OLED 4K monitors coming out this year

  • seems even 5090 may not reach 480 fps on QHD in AAA games
my 4090 only reach around 200 fps on 2K COD or Diablo 4 at highest settings

    • true, but ye this one when factoring all the discount is the same price as their older model (27GS95QE-B, currently on sale for 1156$ at MWave). For the same price you can get the newest model :D!

      • or could get the older model for what price?

        • I mentioned in the brackets - (27GS95QE-B, currently on sale for 1156$ at MWave)

    • A newbie question, can humans see the difference up to 480Hz?

      • modern games are so fast paced that at 120, 240 and even 360 hz the character you are aiming at on your monitor can have moved from your aim by the time you shoot. my aim is too shit and reflexes too slow these days but i'd of loved something like this 10 years ago. also ironically 10 years ago was a better time for getting 360fps.

      • +1

Yes. Its diminishing returns usually after 360hz. But from 165hz to 360hz is really noticeable to my eyes. Especially on OLED with very low response times. Its only really noticeable in games like CS or Valorant, or overwatch and the like. I used human benchmark to test my reaction time between monitors. Using my 165hz i got an average reaction time of 220ms, which is pretty average. On my 360hz oled, i average 148ms which is somewhere in the top 1.2% of reaction time.

        • Interesting. The frame time at 165Hz is 6.1ms. The frame time at 360Hz is 2.8ms.

          That's only around a 3ms difference, yet you're 220-148=72ms faster!

          Am I missing something?

          • @RedHab: Im not too sure about the technicalities between frametimes and human reaction times, and whether its really applicable to the perception of it all. but yes they're the statistics i got between the two monitors when trying to benchmark my reaction time. There's other things like sleep etc which can effect this so its not by any means a realistic measurement neither.

But i do believe that the difference is noticeable to the human eye between the refresh rates at least, say if you went from 144hz to 480hz. A human can definitely perceive that difference, and you will gain a decent advantage in super competitive games like CS or Valorant. but from 360hz to 480hz, it would be very hard to notice in comparison.

            • @OWALL: Thanks for sharing that. I need to read up a bit more about it. I've never seen anything higher than 144Hz personally, so can't comment.

  • This Cashback deal is not valid together with:

Vouchers or Promo codes not featured on our platform

Cashback might be rejected, but who knows.

    • Ahh, I think the discount was a generic discount GEARUP10 attached to the EDU account, so hopefully it does work, if not 1295 for a newly released OLED is a good deal nonetheless :)

Call me a non-gamer but wouldn't the 42" lg c4 @ ~$1200 be a better option if you have the desk space?
I haven't used over 165hz personally, but anything 120+ feels more than sufficient even for sweaty competitive gaming

    • +1

It depends on the scenario i guess, I have a dual monitor setup with another 27inch, doesnt make sense.

There's also features on the gaming monitor that aren't on TVs like Freesync Premium Pro.

If you play competitive gaming (Valorant, CS 2 etc), 120 FPS is not enough.

The TV also comes with all the bloatware.

If you just gaming on console, Id say ye go for the TV, but PC gaming, makes more sense to get a PC monitor.

This monitor was a decision by the marketing team, when to the average consumer there's not a whole lot of difference between one OLED and another so they need to find some number to make bigger.

I remember reading something about our ability to actually perceive a difference in frames caps out at about 75hz (although I've seen as low as 20hz), the ability for the brain to not actually notice the transition in frames at all is an open question but it's probably 200-300hz (thus why 120hz feels nice and smooth, it defeats the caveman part of the brain that is on the lookout for spiders or something).

      • +1

I'm sure there's differences between individuals, but the 20hz claim is ridiculous

        • As in the ability to perceive a difference in the images, not that it can’t tell that it’s a really slow frame rate.

We can notice a difference between 60hz and 120hz in terms of smoothness, but you can’t pick a difference between individual frames.

          • +1

@freefall101: Your claim doesn't really make any sense. If you manage to line up the frame timing between 60hz and 120hz of course you can't tell the difference, because they're the same image, in the same way you could theoretically get the same frame from a 30hz monitor.

The main reason for having a super high frame rate is the reduction in input lag, which is pretty easy to distinguish between 60/120, not sure I could tell the difference between a solid 120/165, but I suspect I could pick between a 120/240 monitor pretty easily.

            • @DeToxin: I think it’s like most nice things - you notice the difference much more when you go back. I upgraded from 120 —> 240hz several months ago and it felt like a very slight upgrade at the time. Now if I limit my frame rate to 120 I can really notice the difference straight away.

Some of your targets in modern FPS games move so fast that at 120 and even 240hz the delay in updating the frame is enough that the character is no longer where you see them. 480hz oled is also pretty damn close to flawless motion clarity. almost back to the CRT days. outside of gaming i notice a pretty big difference between 120 and 360hz scrolling through huge datasheets and what not. it's nice being able to actually skim info while you speed scroll rather than having to stop just to read text.

Thank you! I was surfing for a deal just like this for the past week and was about to pull the trigger on something far less cost efficient. This deal is perfect, i made an account just to thank you. I don't really know how cashback works but i'll take the $1,295.19 monitor anyway! Thanks!

    • Same :D I was about to purchase the ASUS XG27ACDNG, thats going for 1299, fairly new, no discounts from what I see.

But ultimately I prefer LG matte oled panels as I got a bright room.

I think also ASUS PG27AQDP uses the same panel and thats selling for 1799.

  • This might be the cheapest 1440p 480hz oled display, great find OP. If I didn’t have the 3225QF I’d be getting this.

  • Wait is this deal good?

I always say 1440p on 27inch is perfect, anything 30inchs is 4k but OLED is crazy at 480hz as well. Someone help!!

    • It was a good deal! cheapest price for this panel! But its out of stock now! bl D:! LG caught on!

      • This is what I get for waiting, lmao. Damm

        • Its back up for preordering but shopback has 6% cashback!

          • @Zabuza: Sadly it will be pretty close when I go holidays since it "starts"shipping out on the 17th and 11 day delivery is the eta. In any case I could probably send it to families place but can we still get the EDU VIP discount?

            • +1

@iLikeSales: I believe the edu 10% off discount on top of the VIP 10% ends on 25 feb i think.

  • Sad no edu email. Unimelb's alumni email service doesn't work :(

  • OOS so sad. This deal is probably going to be the cheapest OLED of this spec range.

    • +1

Indeed, i think the other brand with the same panel that are selling in Aus is

      ASUS PG27AQDP - $1799 at retailers

Acer Predator X27U F3 - Not in Aus, selling for 1200 USD
Sony Inzone M10S - 1100 USD, on Amazon for 2500 lol, emailed sony support few weeks back, they only answered me that the headphones are available to purchase and didnt even answer me when I replied back about when the monitor was coming.
      AOC AG276QKD - Not released

      • Only issue I see with this monitor is WOLED instead of QD-OLED, although I believe it isn't worth paying substantially more when the spec range is at this price.

    • Its back up for preordering but shopback has 6% cashback!

      • Will shopback track these promo codes?

        • its 2% now i think, they went from 10 > 6 > 2 in 2 days lol, and tbh i dont know yet, they havent shown it tracked yet on my profile, it just says clicked for me in shopback, i submitted a report with proof of screenshot i had shopback as green when i purchased.

If it gets declined, doesn't matter i guess, this is a newly released monitor from LG and this is the cheapest price you can get for this Panel. The same panel for Asus is selling for $1799

  • +1

Thank you! Just preordered, it's a little disappointing that they don't offer a 3 year burn in warranty like pretty much every other manufacturer but fingers crossed it should be fine!

Shopback cashback hasn't tracked yet :'(

    • Where does it say about no burn in warranty?

      • +2

The only thing I've really found is this thread on Reddit that shows the warranty card in Australia which looks the same on their website (in that it excludes 'image retention'). They do offer 2 year burn in warranty in the US but not sure if that's confirmed here or not

        • Interesting, thanks mate.

          • @shano: It's mentioned on their site, found here - https://www.lg.com/au/support/warranty-terms/

Services for which you will be asked to pay
(number 8) This LG manufacturer's warranty does not cover:
Image retention (or image sticking) resulting from prolonged display of a fixed image on the screen.

But ye good luck LG fighting this with ACCC, this is a premium product, I expect this to last longer than an IPS monitor based on the pricing. I'll be pushing this angle. 1.5k vs 200$ monitor.

All praise that guy who took panasonic to court and won after his 8 year old tv became defective :D!

Peters v Panasonic Australia Pty Ltd (Civil Claims) [2014] VCAT 1038

BTW got the monitor today, the screen width is similar to their tvs, very very thin, was scared to carry it as the bezels are thin. Picture quality is so awesome! One thing to note is the text quality is worse than IPS monitors, so what everyone says is true. After playing with the settings, sharpness at 55 with Cleartype on in microsoft settings. helps alot. Eyes got to get use to it. But since my 65% gaming/videos 35% work, I'm fine with it. Got a second monitor which is LG IPS panel and works great for any text i need to really read :D

            • @Zabuza: Hi mate, I was wondering if you are able to create custom resolutions on this monitor? While keeping it at 480hz? I know it has forced DSC and its the one thing that would make / break it for me.

Also is there a specific resolution corresponding to the 24 inch mode of the monitor? if you scroll through all the resolution options does anything look like almost 1440p, like the same ppi but a bit smaller? Cheers

              • @99muppets: hmm i dont think so, ive checked the monitor settings, didnt see anything. Is it under a specific thing?

                • @Zabuza: the 24 inch mode is in the monitor OSD somewhere, not exactly sure where, but the resolution stuff is just in windows displayt panel :)
