      • They vary, but the earliest use by date we had was 30 July. Most in August

  • Do they sell business class meal or economy class?

    • It would be economy.
Business class meals aren't in trays, those items are in a big tray to individually serve.

      • +2

LOL! was hoping they sell business/first class meal too

  • -4

If they are only selling it now I wonder when was it made. Must be nearing an expiry from a year ago? Otherwise, why would you keep producing it with covid in full swing for months.

    • +6

Caterers don't make airline food a year in advance. They generally make it on the day or the day before the scheduled flight.

  • Donation to those in need might be a better idea?

    • +1

      huh?

      • I meant if people would purchase for Gate Gourmet to donate to people in need it would be great.

    • that's come into my mind too, but these meals needs to be microwave to be served!

    • +6

It is - did you do it?

      • if they have a campaign then yes I would.

  • +1

Well, I work near there so going to give it a shot. Thanks OP

  • +2

Portions are ideal for weight loss.

If you just have one for a meal.

  • +2

It's times like this I wish I had a second freezer

    • +2

until you look at your power bill..

      • +2

But the money saved on feeds would cover it. Think of the feeeeeeeeds!

        • oh i know i'd love a second or even third freezer. if i had the space and the money to buy the most energy efficient ones i would

    • Useby dates only give you 2 months supply max

  • the meals i had on my last Qantas flights were surprisingly good.

better than all the maccas i've been wolfing down lately.

    also, nostalgia

Available until stocks fly out the door..

    ugh. lol

  • +1

FYI, in case you didn't know, your taste bud is less sensitive at high attitude, hence airline food taste shit

    • -1

Doesn't explain the texture, the size and general appearance. I'll stick to home cooked meals at $2 per person. I understand the poor business trying something to stay a float, but chosing to eat it when you aren't captive several thousand meters up is beyond me.

Wonder if it comes wrapped in the usual more layers of plastic than the cast of Baywatch?

Only entertainment would be pulling up in ya Falcon, announcing "this is your captain speaking and we are currently traveling at 2 and half feet, the stewards will bring you your meals shortly"…kids would do the usual and mush it everywhere.

    • I watched on TV before that they make it saltier as your taste bud is less sensitive. Could be too salty to eat on ground level? Some people even says food taste saltier on new 787 where air pressure is optimized, less pressure.

Public Transport in Brisbane to factory:
Bus 590 stop is 15min walk away.
Bus travels between Toombul & Garden City

(As route is 5min walk from my place - an easy choice.)

    • Free travel for those with a Seniors GoCard!
Or jump on bus without a GoCard - drivers will let you travel free at the moment due to the virus precautions.
These are usually quite empty buses off-peak.

    • Left home near Carindale @noon, will be back by 2pm after picking up at 1. Was a free ride on buses with 6 passengers🚍

20 packs just fit in 1 woolies cold bag

  • Gonna need to see what meals they are before commiting…

  • +3

Looking at the pictures, seems they are only providing the main dish. For some reason I thought it was the whole tray.

    • Thanks. Didn't realise. Kinda kills the value if I might need 3 of them for lunch

  • The fact that they can't name these meals is concerning…

    • In what way?

      • -1

To name something, you need to be able to identify it. "Can't", not "don't".

  • +6

Wondering whether something like this could be added to the annual ozbargain charity, whereby money contributed goes towards buying meals at $2 a pop and can be given to the homeless/needy/disadvantaged.

Helps a local business doing it tough, while also helps those in need?

I’m sure someone with more time than I could co-ordinate? Could even raise funds through the ozb community to buy a couple thousand of these and then distribute, somehow?

      • Mmm… ok.

I used to think just like you, until you realise the world isn’t so clean cut. Not everyone is homeless because they ‘don’t’ get a job

  • Can't believe they put both a dolled up, nicely plated version next to the picture of what you actually get.. The ones in the tray look absolutely horrible!

  • How much freezer space do I need to store this stuff…

    I don't usually buy 20 frozen meal at a time….

    • You can buy 10 meals for $25.

  • +6

Could someone share photos of the actual meals? Wouldn't mind keep some for quick work lunch, just not sure how big is the portion

    • First available pickup is on Monday.
With 9k clicks & rising, this popular Deal may end before photos are available!

    • Interested know how it tastes like!

  • +7

Thanks OP! I actually love airplane food :D

  • With the current recession and everyone loosing their job, this is good.

  • +8

Now I can bring my own food on Scoot and Jetstar "Do you mind heating this up for me quickly? Thanks"

    • +1

They might think that you nicked it from the galley.

  • +1

    Perfect for those missing travel…

  • +1

I dont even mind the ole airline mains, but i absolutely hate airline breakfasts…

  • Mine says ready for pickup but they don't open on weekend! It must be frozen not made fresh.

    • I don't think they are making fresh meals with flight capacity at around 5% .
Unless they like making huge losses that biz generally don't like to do .

    • It's ready in the freezer!
Check your pickup day next week.

    • Assorted Frozen Meals in ready to heat packs.

It was made fresh some time.

  • +2

ha gold, you don't need to park at the airport, they are in Mascot a couple blocks away. (Sydney)

  • i would be brought the $40 pack but the pick up hours in brisbane are shocking..

  • -3

Everyone is assuming it’s cattle-class meals because Ozbargainers only travel cattle class. That’s all we know… cattle class. How do we know they aren’t first-class meals? For example, the 20 meals could include such dishes as Filet mignon, Coq au vin, Kyo-kaiseki or Snd Míng Jiā Zhēn Zhuàn, and each meal complemented with a bottle of red or white wine. Who’s to say they aren’t first-class?

    • How do we know they aren’t first-class meals?

      We've already discussed it - it's economy
Business class meals are apparently plated from a larger dish.
Economy is disposable - gets small individual plastic tray serves. And like most travellers - chucked out when we reach our destination!

See the photos in the Deal (of food crammed in black plastic trays) instead of living in a fantasy.

It's just an alternative to cheap frozen meals from Aldi etc.
And it's only the meal serve, no extras like wine, cutlery, etc.
      Very economy class!

  • Just ordered the 10 meals for $25 here in Perth, willing to give it a go because why not.

  • These meals are frozen economy meals that were originally destined to be loaded on Virgin Australia flights. This is for longer flights to and from Perth, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and the like. Batch produced, portioned into foil or plastic oven proof containers then blast frozen. With no international flying taking place and domestic aircraft not serving hot meals they have frozen stock that needs to be moved on by retail, find a new commercial home or get dumped.

    • +2

Likely so. Still a reasonable price.

This happens with manufacturers & even supermarkets - too much stock, not enough demand or lack of storage space.

So much used to be dumped, but now is diverted by food recovery services like Ozharvest. Often better for businesses to recover their costs like this.

Was talking with Ozharvest when over a tonne of frozen deserts needed to be quickly cleared to make way for more expensive items at a Woolies distribution centre. Deserts ended up destined for services feeding the needy - but not great nutrition.

      • +2

People don't always realise that deserts can be incredibly cold places, especially at night ;)

            @INFIDEL: I call it autoerror…

            • +1

@strangeloops66: Organising a deal with a business a week back, I replied that their email hadn't been received - had checked Junk folder.
But was corrected to Kink folder! I don't know what the manager thought about that!

              • @INFIDEL: We all have a kink folder, don't we?

                • @strangeloops66: Shhh!😂

                  • @INFIDEL: Thank goodness for passwords, is all I can say.

There's something decidedly ironic (possible incorrect usage, but who cares? Alannis didn't) about an email client correcting Junk Folder - most of my mail goes to that folder - in favour of Kink Folder!

                    • +2

@strangeloops66: Luckily humans have enough intelligence & adaptability to understand the information from the context, rather than the literal meaning of words.

We can find the unexpected use of words humorous. Take that computers!

But if we go on like this… Someone will tell us to get a tool film room!

                      • @INFIDEL: Sometimes it's not the auto-correct that's the problem, sometimes it's the swipe keyboard because some word patterns are remarkably similar.

Like the time I was traveling overseas and sent a pic of the place I was staying along with a message back to the wife:

"Stayed in little hotel in the basement."

You wouldn't guess it but the keyboard pattern for "hotel" is very similar to "girl" on a small screen and inadequate pauses on letters.

                        I swipe a lot slower now 🤣

                        • @4wd: Embarrassing!😂

Yes my above "errors" were just keyboard alternatives to my presses on the phone's screen.

Despite checking before posting, some strange words slip through.
                          Sometimes, it's just human error😢

Emoji suggestions are helpful for some words:
                          Desert 🐪🌵
                          Dessert 🍨🍰
                          How didn't I notice that😉

Airline food, well look on the bright side buy the entire food from them and start a YouTube channel airfoods.

And taste all the foods you ate and vomited up, I'm sure the viewers will love it.

  • +1

If I lived closer to the airport I would have definitely given them a try. Great deal for frozen meals.

    • +1

Like the Kerrigans in The Castle!
But at $2 or $2.50 per meal they'd probably say Tell 'em they're dreaming!

  • purchased 10 meals with $25.
    let's see on Wednesday

  • Upvoted the deal but I can't imagine what quality/macros will be in the food for $2 bucks

  • +2

I am thinking of getting some today for my 10 step virtual holiday.

    1. Buy the meals 2. Push our lounge chairs together, really close 3. half heat the meals and serve them on tiny trays 4. Make the kids wait to go to the toilet 5. Drink too much 6. Have the kids kick the back of my chair 7. Get someone to recline the la-z-boy chair into my knees 8. Play some crap music 9. Watch an old travel show 10. Throw a few thousand dollars out the window.

    Virtual holiday right there.

  • God I miss flying so much. Now I can recreate that sensation with these.
Just need to find somewhere to box myself in and voila!

    Hi everyone!

    I picked up my combo pack (10 lunch/dinners + 10 breakfasts)

    I received the following:

    Lunch/Dinners:
    Rigatoni Pesto Pumpkin x2
    Thai Yellow Curry x2
    Beef Bourguignon x4
    Lemon Chicken x2

    Breakfasts:
    French Toast Mixberry 125g x5
    Pepper & Cheese Omelette w Mushroom 230g x5

French toast breakfast is insultingly small, less than one normal slice of supermarket bread with a few berries. The omelette looks of decent size though.

    • +2

      pictures please

      • Would be good to see!

    • +1

what is in the Thai Yellow Curry? Any meat?

    • Which city is this?

  • +2

I think I drew the short straw. Only got 4 flavours in a 20 mixed bag. 3 of which are meatless. 2 expires in 2 days and a third expires next week. Probably have better luck putting $40 on the pokies

    • +1

      Best before or expiry date?

    • Which city?

    • +1

Why do I get a neg?? Not allowed to express opinions here?

      • What meals did you get and from which city?

        • Mango Chicken
Tom yum fried rice + kailan (veg)
          French toast and berries (tiny)
          Pepper omelette with mushrooms (veg)
          From Sydney

Fried rice was tasty even though it is vegetarian. Haven't tried the chicken yet. Saving the little meat that I have!

          • @BargainsLurker: Thanks! Tom yum fried rice sounds nice lol, but sucks that you got so many veg items.

      • +1

This is Ozbargain: best not to ask "why?" Have an equaliser ;)

  • +3

I picked up a combo pack in Syd today. Based on the packaging, they were all meals prepped for Virgin Australia.

Earliest use-by I had was 22-Aug, with most expiring in early September.

    Lunch/Dinners:
Thai Yellow Curry x3 - vegetarian
    Beef Bourguignon x3
    Chicken & Mushroom Stew x4

    Breakfasts:
    French Toast Mixberry 125g x5
    Scrambled Egg & Ratatouille 270g x3
    Tomato & Mushroom Frittata 185g x2

    • Might be a dumb question but how did they pack them for pick up? Did they put them in a box/cooler of some sort or is it just the case of go to freezer, find your order and load into your own bag/box?

      • The latter - they took my name, went away to get my order and came back with tied up bundles of 10 frozen meals in a plastic bag.

I live very close to their office, so had no problem transporting these home as they were.

        • Good to know! I just placed my order for pickup this Friday so let's see how it goes.

    • You can set pick up dates in October, wonder if the meals will change.

  • +19

I bought the Lunch/Dinner pack only and also got 3 x Thai Yellow Curry, 3 x Beef Bourguignon and 4 x Chicken & Mushroom Stew. I reckon they're good value for $2.50 each. Use by date is Aug and Sept. I can't picture myself eating this every day but handy for backup when I have no time to cook.

    📷 Photo 1 – Exterior packaging
    📷 Photo 2 – What you get

    • Is there meat in the Thai yellow curry? The previous poster mentioned that it's vegetarian. But I thought it's the $2.50 pack.

      • Lunch/Dinner Packs include a variety of chicken, beef, vegetarian meals, and more.

That doesn't answer your question as to whether there is meat in the Thai Yellow Curry, but it does suggest that it may not necessarily contain meat.

      • Vegetarian, same as previous poster.

    • Which city is this?

Edit: nevermind, saw mascot nsw on the cover. Thanks for sharing the photos.
