Buy and hope they won't go belly up

    • +6

There's absolutely zero chance of that happening. Etihad are the national carrier of the UAE and wholly govt owned. They make losses every year and it's just paid for by govt for posterity (and Abu Dhabi's reputation vs Dubai's Emirates airline).

In 2016 the airline lost USD$1.87 billion.
In 2017 it lost USD$1.52 billion.
In 2018 it lost USD$1.28 billion.
In 2019 it lost USD$870 million.
They hope to breakeven in 2024. Maybe.

What will likely happen though is they increase prices by 50% anyway. Nothing's a deal in the Middle East.

They already have. Checked the December Syd-lhr run it’s about $600 more than usual

        • -1

of course flight prices are different ATM. these are abormal times and December is a Peak period

          • @theblake: more than usual, included on top of the peak period

      • It was more of a smarta$$ joke than a serious thought

What if CoVid19 keeps going for 2 years? Expired voucher makes a good collectable in a frame

  • Love how people find new ways to promote things

  • Is something wrong with this deal? Can you please explain if there's any risk because I am thinking to buy some vouchers.
I have an overseas trip planned once this COVID situation get bit normal (which no-one knows how long it will take, I know that risk).
But otherthan that, it looks a good deal to me as it has 2 years validity.

    • Depends if it's valid for flight or just for overpriced travel packages.

    • Risk? Company going bankrupt and not having to pay you a damn cent.

      • Doubt that will happen as the national carrier subsidised by a very rich country

        • Oil rich country when oil price at rock bottom. What if the country broke?

The risk is that Etihad could be charging really high fares to the place or dates that you want to go to. This voucher takes away your choice of choosing the airline or travel agent offering the best schedule or price for your needs.

    • As an airline, there is no risk as its operated by Abu Dhabi Government, during 2008 economical crises, not a single person lost Job in Abu Dhabi.
I would try to negotiate for 5years validity atleast under current conditions.

    -Maximum voucher value US $65,000

Good I was worried they would restrict the value for a second.

    • The did. You can only buy about 100k aud.

    • the tickets for Etihad Suites (above first class) sell for about that

With Etihad it's more likely to be your dream nightmare holiday.

Would this come under the minimum 3 year expiry period for gift cards? https://consumerlaw.gov.au/new-gift-card-laws

    • +1

was thinking the same. pretty sure if they market it to Australian consumers, then yes they must comply

      • +1

Yes and no. True they must comply - but the rules also allow these exemptions, which they fall under:
        - sold for a particular good or service at a genuine discount (e.g. $50 card for salon service valued at $100)
        - part of a temporary marketing promotion (e.g. customers buy a certain product from Business A, which provides a $50 voucher to use at Business B).

Thus, they comply and are allowed to be excluded from the 3 year expiry.

  • If your worried about the airline going under…. use AMEX to pay….their cardholders charge back period protection is the longest

    • +1

But if you got the voucher, what's the criteria for a chargeback? You got exactly what you paid for.

  • I wouldn't be concerned about the airline going under as much as not having the options you want for the next 2 years and having funds tied up with that in mind. Can be worth a punt if you have the spare cash and travel a lot.

  • +1

I would be worried about AU government restrictions on travel, which I think may apply for longer than people think. Flights to anywhere on Etihad will need to transit UAE which isn’t handling the virus so well.

  • Dupe post

    • They recently changed their policy for Australia (under some pressure from ACCC), so your parents should get a full refund now if Etihad cancelled the flight. But yeah agree I wouldn’t book with them again.

      • That was with Flight center. Etihad refused. I called them and they said it was as per their fare rule. No refund even though they cancelled their flights. They refund in the US and the UK but not in Aus.

  • +1

Etihad are pricks. Won't give refund even though they cancelled the flight on my elderly parents. One of the few airlines that refused refunds. Will never fly with them again. This is how they treat customers.

    • They offered alternate flight option or just refused to payback and alternate flight aswell ???

Look at their reviews before yo commit.

Does anyone ever take this into account? I would never go out of my way to write a review on that site unless I had a bad experience, and the same goes for many others - hence mostly negative reviews.

I will say I have flown with Etihad numerous times, and I've had a great experience with them (apart from that one time they forgot my suitcase in Abu Dhabi. Did get like a $100 and my suitcase the next day thought).
