I went to a Spotlight store for the first time last weekend and their prices are on the sky, that's why the discount. Store was also unorganised. First and last time.

    • They're always packed though, must be doing something right.

Little-to-no competition really. At least around NSW, it's either the occasional small-time shop, Lincraft or Spotlight and Lincraft has been closing stores all over the place for years.
So what they're doing 'right' is being the only major B&M reseller of products where a lot of people prefer a tactile approach to shopping and/or need a bit of fabric or yarn quickly. Or where you need home furnishings for the weekend project and want a slightly broader range than Bunnings…

    • Fabric and textiles in general. Look up the price for custom sized curtains! $1000's !!

the "Exclusions list" look like everything…except their overpriced items!

  • I think they just changed "Sales price" to "VIP price"!

What are our thoughts on Mondo bakeware?

Any recommendations on a jelly roll pan? Wondering if I should just use a normal baking deep one, but not sure if that'll work for swiss rolls.

  • I agree, their prices are horrendous. Missus was complaining the other day about sewing materials being so expensive… unfortunately it's one of those things that online is hard to grasp (lines, lbuttons, etc). She asked me to search for yarns online but I'm not as good as for electronics heheh

Craft is such an expensive hobby! You can find really nice buttons, elastics, snips, sewing machine feet and other sewing notions on AliExpress for a few dollars each. At least the same if not much better quality than Spotlight.

Yarn, it depends on what you want to work with. Spotlight is horrendously expensive for whatever fibre you choose. Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury is a nice 100% wool yarn. I'm not a huge fan of their Classic, it's a bit old fashioned but I think their other stuff is ok. I also like KnitPicks, they are based in the US & have very affordable, reasonable quality yarns.

Basic brand names that Spotlight sells (or used to sell) like Cleckheaton and Patons are much, much cheaper online. I also just ordered some DROPS Nepal from the UK which is surprisingly good quality for the price. The UK has some good yarn offerings in general that are quite affordable. Obviously I could talk about yarn all day but Spotlight's poor range and high prices really shit me so I feel for your partner!

      • Where do you buy from overseas? The one I buy they no longer stock hence looking for subs, but only overseas and no idea where to buy from.

        • Most recently, Purple Sheep Yarns. Their shipping times were quite good. Ysolda is another favourite.
