Found these at the Highett OW. I think someone was after some Handheld radios for kids. 7km range. Good for anyone really that needs a set. More than 10 when I saw them this afternoon in discount shelf near keyboard sections. May be cheaper elsewhere. Just saw them in discount section.
Not in all situations. 2-way radios can be much better.

Look for something with a higher wattage, and interchangeable aerial might be useful for in the Grampians, unless you’re only after short distance comms.

@burningrage: As long as you’re not expecting 6-7km range in the hills they might be ok for your use. If they’re not just return them and say that the 7km range is misleading. Besides, compact devices are handy to throw in a pocket if your only planning on heading 500m from base and don’t want something hanging off your belt.

While these are much better than 0.5w units and certainly have their use, don't expect anything on the upper end of the range. 7km will basically only be reachable if you're standing in a perfectly clear field.
