No but this doesn't even offer 4k according to their website.

    • +2

Deliberate business decision I think. Only offer 4k (at extra cost) to the 'premium' satellite customers. Everyone else has to make do with lower resolution.

  • +22

Hopefully 2 weeks isn't enough to finish GOT, but just enough to finish season 7 and you'll be saved from the horrible end

    • Season 8 was ok. Rushed for sure but ok.

  • +2

I'm sure in the not too distant future there will be longer free trials probably along the lines of kayo & betting apps etc

  • +4

I would rather subscribe to HBO Max.

    • Apparently Foxtel has the Australian rights to HBO content for another two years.

      • +2

My VPN provider doesn't know what Australian rights are.

      • Foxtel has all HBO max content exclusively.
Basically the deal prevented hbo max from launching in Australia.
Looking at hbo max it is not worth it as a stand alone product anyways. This works far better as you gets a good mix of content for your money.

      • Five years now,lol.

  • I'm giving it a go just so I don't need to go hunting on the high seas for half of the content.

I'm putting together a family if anyone is interested in cutting costs.

  • How does this compare to Foxtel Go/Now bargain-wise guys?

  • -2

New deal maybe, bargain? Not! Most other streaming services offer one month trial.

    • +2

You're getting something you'd normally pay for instead for free. Sounds like a deal to me.

  • +19

These jokers can't get over themselves and still think its ok to have a tiered system where users choose between SD and HD, let alone 4k not being available.

The dinosaurs that run Foxtel need to be wiped out.

    • +10

Doesnt netflix have the exact same model? re SD/HD

      • +9

Dont let the truth get in the way of a good story

      • +1

        SD/HD/UHD

Binge doesn't have the 4k (yet I assume)

        • I always thought 4K and UHD were interchangeable.. TIL

        • Neither does Netflix in reality at the moment due to the Covid related throttling to protect the NBN.

          • @twjr: Definitely no throttling going on at my place - getting full speeds as expected

            • @TightTerry: Are you getting the full 15.25Mbs streams from Netflix?

              • @twjr: im getting full 4k, ATMOS content the same as what i normally would

  • +4

    Laughs in Plex

    • +8

      You are in plex?

  • +6

I feel this may be the final nail in foxtel's coffin. That and it's key 60+ year old viewership demographic who haven't changed off their $100 a month plans are slowly disappearing.

    • +9

I finally got my Dad to stop paying $200/month for Telstra internet and Foxtel. NBN technician comes on Friday.

      • +1

How’d you sweeten the deal? My old man is stubborn and won’t budge. He likes the idea of only having a small selection of movies to watch at 8:30 rather than being overwhelmed by choice.

        • Aussie Broadband for $75/month. Foxtel Now for $25 + $29 (Essentials + Sport).

Dad bought a new TV so he got a TCL 4K LCD 55” for around $530 that has Android TV, so installed Foxtel Now on that.

If they like it they might get a Foxtel Now box from Kogan for $59 for the other room.

So some initial upfront costs but on going costs of $129/month. And if he’s smart he’ll probably ditch sport during summer (he only really watches AFL) and save another $174 per year.

PS Foxtel Now has both on-demand and live channels.

        • +2

He’ll love FTA then - even less choice!

        • +1

I have Foxtel for sport and bargained the movie pack. I watch more on Foxtel movies than I do on Netflix or from my personal collection. Sometimes I just want someone else to pick the movie for me.

          • +1

@ripoffmerchant: "Sometimes I just want someone else to pick the movie for me."

I feel this. If I spend more then 10 minutes trying to find something new to watch, I end up just starting up an old Survivor season.

            • @ausduckz: Same. I grew up having to share the TV with my family. Living alone now I sometimes miss someone else choosing what to watch funny enough

        • It's because 8.30 is the time he has his cup of tea and his digestive

    • Blanket statement. My parents in 70's do the price haggle every 6-12 months, they were getting better deals than when i had it.

      • +15

It's more the fact that they actively prey on these people, allowing individuals to haggle down to ~30% of the initial price while those who don't, stay on the grossly overpriced, ad-filled channels (much like free-tv, which is free), one would imagine the pension would go a lot further if they didn't need their Sky News Subscription. Their business model is outdated and they know it.

Sorry about the pessimistic rant but i feel Rupert Murdoch has been single handedly ruining Australia's future.

        • +3

I agree with you but I wouldn't just blame him. Society accepted it, so we are partly to blame for it too..
Just like how we will also be to blame when the whole thing comes crashing down :)

        • Well, maybe your inheritance.

  • +3

Not a bad collection of content (hello HBO catalogue), in an ideal world they'd merge with stan and that would be a great value proposition sitting alongside netflix and disney+, shame about no 4K though

    • +1

Also shame newer hbo content will be on Foxtel first and when the series have run their course be moved to binge.
Ok if you want to “binge” not so much if you want to watch each week GoT style.

  • +1

    Does it have West world,?

  • +13

    let murdoch die

    • -1

OooOOh I got SHIVERS reading that

  • +6

Launching without LG or Samsung support doesn't seem too smart … These are the people paying top dollar for a TV and I suspect more likely to pay for this service.

BTW casting doesn't count. Terrible end user experience. Wonder if they even have 5.1 audio?

    • Given Android tv penetration far exceeds Samsung and LG owners I suspect they have made the wiser choice.

      • Who's talking about choice? They should have done both. around 50% of tvs sold in Australia are Samsung and LG, Hisense and Sony are around 15% each, and everyone else in in single figures (according to GFK stats)

        • They will do eventually
Those tvs use proprietary systems and developing for them is not as clean cut. Android tv is simple to develop for and this would be why they are available at launch.
They needed to get the product launched and they did. They would of been foolish to wait until they had every device supported.
Same reason Apple TV + app is only on selected devices they need to develop it. It’s one Samsung and Sony TVs so far only.

  • If you hate Murdoch, sign up and cancel just before it renews.

  • is there matrix movie on binge?

    • No, they're on Stan though

    • On Netflix USA.
      Just use VPN

  • Jeez they should at least merge with 10 all access

  • +2

They might have been able to tempt me with 4K GoTs. HD will not tempt me.

    • +1

Pretty hard when only seasons 1 & 8 are available in 4K. I'm assuming most of the other content they have isnt available in 4K either so doesnt make sense to hve a 4k option yet.

      • They only filmed season 8 in 2.4k resolution edited down to 2k.

  • +2

Is this just a reboot of the failed Presto?

    • +10

Just watch it disappear like magic. Presto!

    • +6

Ah Presto … think I had 3 free 6-month trials, never paid a cent … yet they had no subtitles, a flaky app, their player would randomly stop in some places, it didn't properly remember where you had watched up to, and didn't work properly with Apple TV … and Telstra and Foxtel seemed surprised it struggled against Netflix.

      • +1

I read the word yet as 'yeah' and thought you were listing a bunch of negatives but would finish with a positive but then your post ended.

  • I have the $39 sports HD offer until August. And, everything is unlocked (Movies / drama etc) till end of June. By then, they should have more platforms for the Binge App.
So, $25 (Kayo) + $14 (Binge) = $39 come end of June…. same price, same content, no IQ box though :(

    • +6

I find these open ended comments fascinating. Can you please enlighten us all how this is a bad thing and how it constitutes a negative vote for the deal?

      • +2

Personally, I find that the more streaming services there are, the greater possibility for content to become diluted amongst services. Yes, competition will probably drive reduced pricing for consumers, but is it really that good if I have to pay for 3+ services for the shows I like?

    • +2

Hardly a reason to neg. You aren't forced to subscribe to it.

    • Though I wouldn't agree with negative vote, but Obargain's voting system is Very flawed where alot of people upvote business related reasons & favouritism

    • competition means lower prices.. unless you don't like lower prices.

  • I have tried Hotstar (Indian streaming) costs around $20/Year for Disney+ and premium dramas (including HBO shows) and is one of the cheaper streaming options out there.
The only issue is that they have blacklisted a few VPN providers e.g. PIA and Nordvpn and the only service working now is Windscribe.

Edit: I have not tried all of the VPN providers out there but I suspect the good ones will still work e.g. Express VPN. Best way to watch this is via Android TV (vodafone or xiaomi are your cheaper options where you can simply use the vpn app)

  • +8

Seriously what a load of rubbish. Launching with only phones and Chromecast support.

Where is the PS4, XB1, LG, Sony, Samsung app support?

This will end up dead much like Presto.

    • Works great on my Shield device so this null and voids your comment re only phone and Chromecast support.

    • Works on android tv also.

  • For those who wanted to know. You can cancer the trial straight away and still use it for 2 weeks.

    • +6

Not even worth giving them your details.

    • +3

      Cancer is the right word!

      • +1

        Lol. Oops.

  • +4

Lol how generous of Mr. Murdoch - Dolby Digital…

  • +1

2 weeks? Either like Apple they have so little content they know you can smash it all out within a month or they're just tight. Either way foxtel/presto/binge whatever they wanna call it is dead

    • Netflix has removed trials on a lot of countries. Shorter trials or no trials at all becoming the norm.

Soon it will he pay 50% for first month or something.

      • That may well be the case but in the Aussie market Netflix, Stan, Prime Video, all still offering month trials.

        • yes still.. for now
          that was my point

  • Kind of reminds of presto

  • +2

they needed to wait until they had more hardware support before releasing.
    this is DOA

    • Apple TV and Android Tv make up a huge market share so they have chosen to support the majority first.

  • +2

This is pretty cool in my opinion. It seems to have all the main content that was missing from Australian streaming services like HBO and shows like The Walking Dead. I just hope this has a decent bitrate as the quality was a little poor on Foxtel Now. 4K would be nice but looking at the library I don't think most of these shows have 4K versions anyway. Of course movies could be 4K but even Netflix sucks at this unless it's their own stuff…

I recommend an app like Subby to try to keep track of all the services because staying subbed to them all of them at the same time is pretty costly.

I also recommend the site Justwatch where you can find where to stream the content you want. Binge doesn't seem to be included yet but if it says Foxtel there's a good chance it'll be there.

    • Not sure why you have been neg but anyway… I currently use myepisodes to keep track of my TV Shows but I'll check out Subby.

Justwatch app is awesome. I'm sure the Binge app will be added very soon.

      • Neg could be because Foxtel = Bad.
Which is fairly understandable but I just want this content to be easily available to Australians already. Also I believe this is technically Streamotion on behalf of Foxtel or something like that. Or maybe Streamotion is just Foxtel. I'm not too sure.

    • +1

I agree. I've been trying to get HBO content for a while and was able to subscribe to HBO Now through Google Play, but that's 19 USD monthly. I only need the Android app to connect to Chromecast and nothing else.
I've just started the trial and am watching Westworld, which I have been watching on HBO Now (trial).
The content is pretty good… It they don't make me wait days for the new episodes of Last Week Tonight, Mr Murdoch might have my money after this trial… Or not…

      • Thinking the exact same thing.

      • I checked out HBO Now while it had some free content recently. Pretty cool but I couldn't get a very stable high quality stream over my ExpressVPN unfortunately.

I'd recommend checking out Binge when your trial is over. It could be better for you value wise and it works over chromecast. Last week tonights seems in date to me.

You can always check the library before signing up

        binge.com.au/shows
        binge.com.au/movies

  • can i sign up for this trial if I already had multiple trials with Foxtel Now (the 10-day one)

    • It is all linked to your mobile. If mobile has been used before then no.

    • I had a free trial with Foxtel Now. I had no issues with signing up to a Free trial with Binge.

  • Take it it doesn't have Its always sunny in Philadelphia?

    • +2

      Correct, it does not.

  • eh, got free Netflix from my MCO card. it's good enough for me most of the time, can usually find a stream for specific things that aren't on there

  • Does it include Curb Your enthusiasm?
