  • Nice.
Weird thing happens when I change the quantity to 2. The total becomes $23.98 (so 11.99) each. Not sure it its because I am a Kogan First member.

what's different about it apart from the price?

        • -5

looks, discount amount? with that attitude why bother getting any other version of other product, just get the cheapest everything.

          • +2

@yoba: So your one is better ?

            In what way?

            • @jv: aesthetics was enough in this case, not to everyone I get it.

  • +5

Looks cheap and tacky even from the photo.

I just happened to install the Bunnings one yesterday. Claimed 8hr runtime; was dead after 1-2hrs. Don't waste your money.

    • +2

Did it have time to charge up the battery fully do you think? Also did you happen to notice the included Rechargeable AA battery what's it rated at as if it's a low capacity one I might consider swapping it out for something larger perhaps but I would think it should last more than 1-2 hours on the included battery hopefully? Cheers for sharing your findings..

      • 600 MAH for the Kogan one (and I assume Bunnings will be the same). OzB's favourite Eneloop AA's are 1900 MAH, so yes swapping it out would likely yield better results.

        • +3

@mouth I'll give that a go and report back if anyone is interested

        • What technology? Check it is NiMH first.

Better solar lights use LiFePO4: https://www.bunnings.com.au/solar-magic-3-2v-600mah-14500-li…

          • @bargaino: these are not a drop in replacement for 1.2v NiMH batteries, please dont expect them to work better in lights designed for NiMH. Also upgrading the 600mah cells to higher capacity will have limited results depending on the solar panel and orientation and direct sunlight

@Jonc It said to charge in sun for a day before first use which i did.

It was too hard to get the battery cover off and the cheapness of everything inside was screaming out "i'm going to break any second!" so I gave up pretty quickly before i could find out haha

The light was really low after a couple of hrs and they might just count that as still being on to get their claimed 8hrs? YMMV though, just my experience so far.

        • @theoldbladerunner thanks for sharing your findings and confirming those details, looking forward to your findings over time and if you do decide to swap out the battery to something that is larger in capacity. All the best!

        @Jonc @mouth @Ice-Eyes

So i swapped out the battery with an Ikea LADDA rechargeable and it ran full brightness all night as expected. The battery was fully charged in my Nitecore D4 so the battery was in it's optimal state before going in.

I'll monitor it over the next few days to see how it now goes running off the little solar charger inside to see if it keeps its charge over time and maintains that runtime.

I'm in it for a total of $15.75 @ $12 for the unit + $3.75 for battery so i'll be happy if it continues to run at this level.

    • My bunnings one goes for ages, it gets a lot of afternoon sun though, so I'd say you either aren't getting enough direct sun on it, or the battery is toast.
My only problem was using the template for mounting as it was not the same spacing as the holes on the light!

      • @nafe They sell 2 different version at Bunnings. A $12 one and an $18 odd dolar one. Both around the same size just from different comapanies.

Mine didnt come with a template and had to make up my own so maybe you got the $18 one?

        • I honestly don't recall how much it was. The template was on the box itself.

          • @nafe: Just checked my box and no template. You obviously got a different one to me. I should've spent the extra $6! Haha

            • @Villainous: Only had the one type at my Bunnings! Was a spur of the moment purchase. Got sick of people not being able to find my house (even though there's only 6 houses in our street!).

              • @nafe: Yeh I bought for same reason.

The $18 one was in the letterbox section. The $12 one they keep in the solar lighting section in a completely different aisle.

                • @Villainous: That makes sense. I assumed they were the same. I went to the letterbox section to grab some large numbers, and then decided to go the solar one instead!

  • Have had same (from bunnings) now it's rusty and the light doesn't work at all. Had about 4 years. Still displays the number ok .

  • I purchased it from Kogan..Battery died with in an year

    • Can you replace the battery?

  • It is really good but took one month to arrive Blame COVID

      Blame COVID

      Blame Australia Post…

Will only be good for people who live at number 36 :)

    • If you live at 9E, you could install it upside down

      • hahaha, Just in case anyone does need letters I don't think the Kogan one includes letters BUT the one at Bunnings does :-)

        • says 1 x A-H letters included. No love for those past H!

          • @yoba: If you live in a place that goes past H, you either can’t afford it, and/or there’d be no room on your collective mailbox wall to fit it! And you’d spend 4yrs trying to get body corporate approval. Who’ll be jealous and say N-O-O-O

          • @yoba: Ow dear, how did I miss that… I think I need to just go home and enjoy the weekend.. hahah
