Hi y'all.

Was looking for a new digital cordless home phone for our property (yes some people still use these), and in the true ozbargain spirit I looked online to see what deals I could find, when I noticed Jaycar were discontinuing and clearing out a chunk of their Panasonic digital cordless home phone range.

Some examples are as follow:

Panasonic Single Handset Digital Cordless Phone KX-TGD320ALB $35.97 (Was $69.95)
https://www.jaycar.com.au/panasonic-cordless-telephone-with-…

Panasonic Twin Handset Digital Cordless Phone KX-TGD322ALB - $47.97 (Was $79.95)
https://www.jaycar.com.au/panasonic-twin-handset-cordless-te…

Panasonic Triple Handset Digital Cordless Phone $59.97 (Was $99.95)

Panasonic Triple Handset Cordless Telephone with Mobile Link & Repeater KX-TG7883AZS - $113 (Was $189)
https://www.jaycar.com.au/panasonic-triple-handset-cordless-…

In addition, Officeworks carry's some of these units also (e.g. KX-TGD320ALB (First Example noted above))
https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/panasonic-…

As a result I was able to get a further 5% off through Officeworks price-beat (FTW!)

NOTE: Most of these clearance items are in-store at selected Jaycar stores only so will require a store nearby with stock on hand if Officeworks is to price-beat it. Refer to the store stock locater on the site to see if there is any stock near you.

SEARCHING TIP: Using Jaycar's website search box, I wasn't able to easily find the models. Recommend searching via google.

Enjoy!! :)

I remember when these first came out and were $400 a pair.

  • Im assuming they arent NBN ready? Need either an adapter or the router with phone facility?

    • Yeah, either plugging them into a VoIP router, or of you have FTTP the NBN breakout box should have phone lines integrated so you shouldn't need it on your router.

Finding VoIP ones that are out of the box ready with NBN is practically impossible.

      • Wait, what does NBN ready mean? I thought it was a marketing gimmick.

Recently got NBN ready phones and they are plugged into my router. My 20 year old corded one worked as well when plugged into my router as well hence the reason I thought it was a gimmick.

BTW I am on HFC NBN.

        • Exactly, it is a marketing gimmick. I didn't make my point clearly earlier, by out of the box ready I meant that it would work without a VoIP router on a connection that isn't FTTP. Nearly no landline phones fit this description.

Since nearly all landline phones don't have VoIP on board which means the router needs to have it if you're not on an FTTP connection. Most aftermarket routers don't have this causing the problem with the branding, if you've upgraded your router to one without VoIP then your "NBN Ready" phone won't work on the NBN.

For clarity, I take no responsibility for people and business abuse of 'NBN ready'… much like 'digital ready' TV and set top boxes…

But… to this deal… Not sure for different connections, but FTTN, you need some added hardware to translate from whatever normal phones use to NBN specific 'pings and bings'… thats either…

          • A router with voip built in and then any old or new phone can plug in to said modem router and it will translate so to speak. The modem router natively knows the right pings and bings to use, and it 'speaks' old phone tech.

          • If the router does not have that, mine doesnt, then theres a puck sized bit of hardware that knows the right pings and bings, which plugs into an ethernet port on said modem router and converts non NBN usable phones to NBN usable (about $70).

          • And then there are modern phones that have the necessary hardware built in, no puck or voip ready modem router requried.

Either way, some part of the hardware has to have the ability to make with the voip, at least for fttn.

Im also assuming without all this you could use software phones and sit at the pc with a headset or whatever. Im just referencing in regard to using this type of phone in the deal. Plenty of people prefer it.

The model I purchased (Panasonic Twin Handset KX-TGD322ALB) says that it has been NBN Tested on the box.
I don’t think they are VOIP phones, and will probably need a voip router (if you don’t have a FTTP connection).

I remember seeing a pair in the museum just before they closed down for the lockdown…

Living 30 minutes from Sydney CBD and get no cell phone connection. Was with Vodafone we moved here. 5 towers within 1km of me, their support kept stalling and said it was due to upgrades. Noted friends and family on Telstra and Optus have the same issue.

      Back to using Landlines now.

Friend recently bought a unit 15mins from Sydney CBD. Has the same issue. IDK how they are constructing these new buildings

      • Back to using Landlines now.

Our mobile switches to wifi-calling when reception is bad.
