Google Nest Camera IQ $299 (Was $479) @ Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys

220

This is the IQ version of the indoor Google Nest Camera, not to be confused with the non-IQ version (which has also been discounted from $279 to $228: see eg. Officeworks ). From looking at Pricehipster this unit doesn't seem to have been reduced in recent history (December).

IMO a great price for the IQ version of the camera.

Also available at TGG and JB Hifi.

Officeworks has free delivery for orders above $55 in Metro areas.

Reading the description feels like living in '1984'.

Can you set it to wake you in the morning by saying:

    "Good morning, Dave."

Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

People who care about others and vulnerable people download the app.

Yeah a half working app is going to help people, you're delusional

It's true, the evidence isn't there that COVIDSAFE will actually be beneficial. On the other hand, the source code for the client app is released, so it's not hard to see what data is being recorded. And in general, why does it matter if a list of Bluetooth handshakes are recorded?

          • -3

@ozbking: That’s what they thought in the 60-70s before AIDS was discovered :P

            • @SmartCover: I'm not sure what your are referring to for 60-70s

I'm speaking from a scientific perspective, there hasn't been experimental data to show Bluetooth handshakes can manage contact tracing better.

Bluetooth also wasn't available in 60-70s

I think it seems sound to say it will likely work, but there is a risk of false positives/negatives, false sense of relief, and incorrect use of the app that can make contact tracing actually worse.

Just feeding more data to google.

  • Was waiting for Google to release the new Nest Aware plan
Google originally announced a new plan will take in plan in early 2020
but till now there's no further news
Probably postpone due to the virus

it is now active , as we speak! check your nest aware account :)

      • Oh, didn't know that
        Thanks mate
        Just subscribed the new plan

The old plan is not making sense that each camera needs a separate subscription
New plan covers all cameras in same account

        • Just be aware that the new plans don't provide 24/7 recording history, they are only 'events based'.

  • +1

Do you need to pay for a subscription for this to work properly?

    • To utilise most of the functions yes, subscription needed.

    • +4

no subscription = no recording. (Free only = Acts just as a live view only device)

  • Is this a good substitute for a baby monitor? Been trying to find something decent…

  • If it is Indoor, consider Kasa KC110 where you can place it on ceiling.

It's doing free cloud recording at the moment up to 7 days I think. There will be Kasa Care for subscription but for now it is free.

I think it's a good camera too. Fit for purpose.

    • Love the Kasa cameras quality wise it shits all over my Google Nest Camera, howver I was unable to stream the display for longer than 10 minutes (onto a Google Nest Hub) it's a common issue unfortunately which made it useless as a baby monitor.

I switched to the Nest Camera, it's laggy and blurry compared to the Kasa unfortunately. But can stream straight for days.

  • Wonder whether this is a permanent price drop. Nest/Google announced new pricing for cameras in the US overnight.

  • A bit off topic but you should aim the IQ Outdoor Nest Camera which seems to get good reviews.

But again, subscription would probably deter most.

  • +1

New subscription just came out. Been waiting for awhile but good for me as I have the iq outdoor X2 and the best doorbell. May look at an indoor iq as well …

    • Are the IQ outdoor available in Australia yet or did you order online ?

      • +1

Technically in Australia nothing is allowed to use 5Ghz outdoors, that's why it's not officially available here.

        • +1

          Bhphoto in the US

          • @EnergicAU: Thanks, that's where I got my Nest Hello, might have to look at them again. Shane the exchange rate sucks right now 😬

            • @cook99: Yeh having had Xiaomi cameras for awhile and annoyed at reliability and issues of footage being useless after 2 breakins thought I'll get a better quality cam. Tossed up between hikvision and Google and the ai won me over

  • https://www.droid-life.com/2020/05/12/reworked-nest-aware-su… To get more folks to buy into its hardware, Nest is also updating pricing for select products. Nest Hub smart displays now starts at $89 and Nest Cam Indoor now starts at $129.

  • Can I put this inside the window at the front door point outside to do facial recognition? If possible I want to use this in conjuntion with IFTTT to open the front door for the right person :)

    • Don't think the new Google nest cams have iftttt integration. Under old nest yes, but migrated accounts or new accounts lost ifttt

  • Why would I get this over a Google Nest Hub Max?

    • Depends on where you are going to put it, the angle of the Nest Hub Max is pointing slightly up.
