Don't drop them, even if just into the sink.
Ceramic knives chip easily and will break sometimes into pieces. And that crap about them never going dull… total BS.

    • +4

90% never go blunt the other 10% the ones that haven't broken do go blunt

    • Even better is if you've tried butchering meat with them and notice a chip that might not have been there earlier…

      Ceramic shards for alllllll

I saw these the other day but can only go in the dishwasher when it's not on

    • +10

So, just store them there then?

    • +2

How do you even fit in there?

  • how to sharpen this? can i use usual metal knife sharpening?

    • +1

      Cannot

  • +11

If it was just the knives, it wouldn't be appealing.

  • “ Stick the blade and handle together manually“

    Sounds safe.

  • I’d a pair, stayed in my kitchen for a month, then was sent to final destination- dustbin!!

In summary it can easily chip when dropped, not dish washer safe, and cannot be sharpened? Hmmmm

  • Got this exact set a few years ago for around $12 from memory and got about $12 value from them for 2-3 years before they dulled beyond an acceptable state. Alreasy had a good set of Globals so these were just used for odd jobs and put through the dishwasher whereby the Globals are hand wash only. OK but nothing amazing. Look good though!

    • Are Globals actually good knives? They seem pretty expensive for what you get.

Yeah, we love ours! They're obviously nowhere near 'the best' but if you treat them well, hand wash & dry them off & return to the block after each use and sharpen them with a good water wheel type sharpener whenever they get noticeably blunt then yeah they'll easily outlast you and still be as good as they were the day you bought them even when you're on your death bed! Of course this could be said about lots of other brands too as it's really down to never putting them through the dishwasher that's key but the 10-20 second hassle of hand-cleaning after each use is far outweighed by the absolute pleasure when using them. A set of seven in a block with a water wheel type sharpener can be had for around the $250-350 mark depending on which style you want but I can guarantee if you look after them they'll literally be the last set of knives you'll ever need.

Thanks for that detailed reply, you seem really happy about yours so I'm sure they are at least decent. I'll look at buying a set the next time I see them on sale.

I know all about the hassles of hand cleaning and sharpening knives. I was stupid enough to get a set of Japanese artisan style knives with the whole stone sharpening blocks…. then a diamond grinder for the stone block. Just too much effort. That's why I'm looking to replace them and they can just sit there on display.

@Smol Cat: Yep, only ever buy them when on sale but definitely be sure to get one of the stone water wheel sharpeners as they're excellent! Gentle on the blade and keeps the proper angle… you literally just put a bit of water in, pull each knife through a few times then empty the water out and pack it all away. The sharpening session takes all of about 2-3 minutes once every month or two. Again I'd say the same would go for many other brands too inc the similar priced Furi etc. but I kinda like the simplicity & feel of the one-piece Globals.

            • @SteveAndBelle: You've convinced me on that water wheel, will pick it up next time I see a set thanks!

              • @Smol Cat: Yeah, one like this

                • @SteveAndBelle: Here from a known seller: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Global-2-Stage-Ceramic-Water-Kni…

There are others $2-3 cheaper but they look like different models.

I'm curious, but I don't think sharpening (my) Furi Pros (20deg blade angle) on it would be a good idea as they ceramic wheels are set to a 15deg angle for global knives (10-15deg factory).

                  • @Lukian: Yeah, not sure. Maybe the Furis need a different sharpener? I dunno as I don't own them but the general cleaning & maintenance of such knives is all the same and really isn't as much hassle as many think.

  • Is this brand pig latin for…. ?
