  • Anyone know If these portable SSDs be able to be plugged in and powered by a TV USB port?

    • Shouldnt be a problem they are powered fine by normal 500ma USB

      • That would fall back to USB 2 speed.

If you want USB 3.0 speed it requires 900 mA. So really you need the 900 mA power if you want to be at least running at USB 3.0. But hey if you are content with only USB 2.0 then 500 mA on the TV would do just fine.

        • +2

This should run at full USB 3.1 speeds on 800 mA. The device is rated for 0.8 A (P22 product specs)

          • @fastnet: Yeah so long as the TV supports USB 3.1 it should be fine. But i don't think every TV supports USB 3.1 but most more modern TV should support USB 3.0 which is fantastic. But you might have one of those older TV which only supports USB 2.0 but i suppose you can still stream video perfectly fine with that speed even.

        • Yea but still works, which means its gonna work on USB3.0 etc too

    • It should work without issue
But if your TV USB port is a USB 2.0
the read speed will drop significantly

Also, I would not recommend always plug in the T5 to the TV
as most TV USB port only get power when the TV is on
better to plug-in T5 when TV is already on (and when you need to use the T5)
otherwise for turning on/off the TV it will re-powercycle the T5 drive everytime

      • But if your TV USB port is a USB 2.0 the read speed will drop significantly

Hmm, would a TV need to read faster than 40MB/s anyway?

better to plug-in T5 when TV is already on (and when you need to use the T5) otherwise for turning on/off the TV it will re-powercycle the T5 drive everytime

Isn't it better to switch the drive off when the TV is off, rather than having it run 24/7/365?

        • What I mean is just plugin the T5 when you need to access it (eg. watching a movie)
Otherwise, for example, if you turn on the TV by mistake, and turn it off straight after
The T5 will still powering up and then it turns off
not really ideal for any drives (while T5 is solid state so should be more durable than old mechanical drives)

Oh, right. That could certainly be a problem with mechanical drives, but with SSDs it's not really a problem as there are no moving parts to wear out.

        • I thought USB 2.0 was more like around 30MB/s in the real world.

          • @hollykryten:

I thought USB 2.0 was more like around 30MB/s in the real world.

I've had closer to 40Mbps. In any case, 30MB/s is 240Mbps. A 4K Bluray ranges from 72-144Mbps, so there's plenty of headroom even if you don't transcode.

    • They're rated at 5V/0.8A so shouldn't be a problem.

    • those were the good times

Downvoting your comment as I don't agree with a neg based on a previous low price, it's a good deal at the moment.

    • You serious try and find anything that’s a tech deal now days… they are selling out dated tech like Wii U’s for $400+ ffs

    • +1

@motorhead was the aussie peso also sitting at 60c?

    • Still expensive last time of last time it was $79

  • Very tempting for the PS4, but shouldn’t spend money on it now that tge 5 is so close…

    • Why wouldn't you just use this with the 5 as well??

      • True. But I suspect a 500GB drive Will be fairly laughable to next gen titles. And they’re likely to use USB-C / thunderbolt for external storage …

      • PS5 game storage expansion is via NVMe SSD's only and only fast ones at that.

        • Ta. Had missed that. That will be quick indeed.

$79 ebay deal for the 1tb was the best if you were lucky enough.

    • +4

My best deal on one of these came free. Had a small dent on the 1TB variant, and all i wanted was a replacement. The gave a refund and told me to keep the unit. Win-win.

    • +3

      $79 for the 1TB?! wowzers

      • Yeah pretty sure it was during flash sale for first 100 orders.

        • Yep, a lot of angry people that day. Luckily I was not amongst them :) Great product.

    • You sure it's SSD?!

      • It definitely is.

Good day for those of us who were patient and got lucky.

        • Aghh right it was one of those hourly deal things like with the airpods. Have the be extremely lucky to land one of those, especially against all the bots.

        • +1

Lol the amount of negs on that deal tells me not to even bother waiting for that price again.

    • I was lucky to have snagged one of those, use it almost daily with my BMPCC4K camera and it's served me really really well. Was also able to sell my 500GB for more so pre much-made money on the upgrade process ;)

  • Thanks for this! Was literally just about to get one from JB

  • +2

Thanks for this! Glad I didn't pull the trigger on the WD deal yesterday $129 for the 512GB

  • Good price, grabbed a 500gb for $129 a few months ago and been using as a boot drive on an iMac with no issues

Be aware the T7 was released not long ago, twice the price but uses an NVME drive instead of SATA so miles faster

    • out of interest do you just use USB2.0 or how've you used it as a boot? i've got a clapped out 2011 imac that i'm looking to freshen up but can't be bothered opening it up

      • +1

Looks like the 2011 iMacs have USB2. Would be faster if you could get a FireWire 800 enclosure but no idea how expensive they are and if they work with SSDs.

      • +1

        It's a 2015 so it has USB3.0

TBH wouldn't bother opening it since the screen glass needs to come off and that's no fun; I'm getting around 420MB/s reads and writes on Blackmagic's disk speed test using USB3

  • Anyone know if the T5 drives are shuckable? Also any ideas what drives are inside? I've found articles from 2017 so hoping things haven't changed.

    • +3

I think you could find bare SSDs of the same speed for cheaper than buying a T5 and pulling it apart.

  • Fyi the 1tb is cheaper on Samsung epp with the $50 off $250 coupon applied. Around $200 from memory.

    • +1

Looks like they are not there any more. There is the 1tb T7 touch for $280 which isn't bad

  • Out of stock for following:

  • +1

does anyone know if the red or blue drives are better?

    • Same, one for man and other for woman

      • +1

thought so, but figured it would be worth askin!
        thanks for quick reply

    • +1

Hex code for the color blue is #0000FF and the red color is #FF0000. You can clearly see that red is superior as it does not start with a 0.

      I'd go for red.

    • +1

red is always the fastest colour,

but for real, they should be the same, the colours are just your preference.

    • +1

Best performance is achieved by buying the blue one then painting it black.

But don't do this with the red one, you'll get terrible slowdowns.

  • +3

Only $10 less than officeworks for the 1tb drive.
I've got a couple already and they're great but not cheap enough to buy extras to have spare.

    • +1

yeah, I have 2 already, lightning fast , but need a killer deal if I was to buy more.

  • Seems to be all sold out

  • Those were some good days when I got the 1TB one of these for around $160 during eBay deals last year.

  • +1

I don't need one, got plenty of storage… but these keep getting upvoted on OzB makes me feel like I'm missing out.
