Annual Fee: $0 for the first year, $395 p.a. ongoing
$100,000 spend every 12 months from card approval to get the 50,000 points business loyalty bonus

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion cardholders are eligible for this offer

Offer expires: 3 June 2020

American Express is offering 75,000 Membership Rewards points plus no annual fee for the first year for new Card Members of the American Express Business Explorer until 3 June 2020.

The card is very similar to the personal version of the American Express Explorer but with a few key differences which gear the business card toward consistently high spenders looking for high points return on their spend.

There is a requirement of $3,000 minimum spend within the first three months to trigger the bonus points. Also, offer eligibility criteria states that no previous Card Holder of an American Express-issued card within the last 18 months are eligible for the bonus. If you have held a bank-issued American Express card, such as those from ANZ or Westpac, you will still be eligible for the bonus.

Membership Rewards points convert at a ratio of 2:1 Membership Rewards points to points in most frequent flyer programs. They also convert at a rate of 2:1 to Hilton Honors points and at a rate of 3:2 to Marriott Bonvoy.

This means the current 75,000 bonus points offer is equivalent to 37,500 points when transferred to frequent flyer programs such as Krisflyer, Asia Miles and Etihad Guest Miles. We cover the transfer rates to different programs in more detail further down in the guide.

Do you need an ABN to apply?

    • +1

YES AND YOU need to be gst registered i believe

  • No $400 travel credit each year or smartphone screen insurance.

No it's not worth to get it.

Find a credit card that offfers points + travel credits + no fee for the first year.

      • unwind a couple of years

    • cancel card before first year for free reward points?

      • yes you can do that. if you dont plan chasing up new sign up bonuses for amex promos in 18 months time and to avoid credit check file entry's and a new application i think its but best to try and transfer it to a no annual fee amex card if allowed ie intl business USD no fee card or a personal points earning card like the discovery or escape ones.

  • i never got my 100k on last offer i think because i had personal amex cards. id prefer to get the $400 travel credit ON the personal card. does anyone know if they allow you to change from a business amex to a personal explorer without doing a new credit check and new application?

Amex phone supports always been really good for me. I’d just call and ask. If it’s possible then they may be able to kick that off for you.

    • Do you find you get value from this card?

I signed up last year to try out given the free annual fee. I have fee-free personal cards, so not eligible for the bonus points. I just wanted to see if I can get good value from the higher earn rate.

Turns out I don't get that much value from it, so not sure if I will renew. Coupled with HSBC for 2% cashback, 5% Wish Cards, and other alternative venues for discounts. I guess businesses that buy lots of stock, supplies, etc will benefit big, but not my situation. Besides the free Amex cards still give points, just at a lower rate.

Even the $400 travel credit, my friend on the personal Explorer was disappointed when booking via Amex, the routes to their destination were limited (compared to alternative travel agents). But they still had to go through them to use the $400.

I am undecided whether I will renew in a few months' time. But you are right, if I do, being able to swap to personal Amex Explorer seems to give better value.

Still a good offer, at least I got the chance to check it out for myself.

I’m considering the consumer version of this card along with the Virgin one that has the free return flight, should that card become available again and the Virgin scenario sort itself out.

Value on this card would consist of the following for me:

        1) I would use the travel credit but as you note options are limited. I’d probably say the $400 credit has about $300 value for me, given options outside the program are more flexible.

        2) Phone insurance for displays would be a nice perk

        3) the point earn rate is appealing. I have a platinum edge that gets 3 points for petrol and groceries. Combining with this card for shopping everywhere else would be a good combo in regards to point earn.

The caveat is most of my Amex redemptions have been towards the Velocity program. It’s a bit of a wait and see as to how the rewards stack up in a few months from now. Our trips are all domestic and Qantas isn’t an option with the two cards that appealed to me so I’m not sure if those cards will be significantly less interesting a few months from now. Here’s hoping not.

The Velocity card with the return flight would have probably been my preference as it goes the routes I need and would likely get me flights in excess of the cards annual fee. The point earn rate was quite good too, although limited to the Velocity program. I do miss the return flight that the Platinum Edge used to have. Travel credits just so much less useful for me, and at $199 a year that was an amazing benefit.

        • As soon as you mention flights are useful for you, I can see the rationale you layout is sound. After all, they seem designed for the traveller. I could be wrong, but it is called Explorer, maybe as a reference to this(?) The card with return flights is also a great deal, especially if your routes match.

But once travel/flights are no longer a priority, their values drop significantly, such as in my case. The devaluation in April 2019 also wipes out some great value point transfer programs. E.g. transferring to the Marriott/SPG Program used to be such good value, and I am glad I transferred the bulk of my points to that before the devaluation. But after that, with the change in transfer ratio, it is no longer worthwhile.

I also value the phone screen insurance, and the free Essential card already gives me that. It also still gives me 1.25pts/$, although lower than Explorer's $2pts/$. So harder for me to justify the annual fee.

Definitely sign up with one or the other, if it gives you value. Cheers.

      • not much value to me, prefer the personal one. im in same boat just spent over $3000 to see if i would get 100k but never did since i had lots of personal cards which they made me close the DJ and explorer cards before approving the business one so it was a tough long application process to get approved . let me know if they let you transfer to a personal card etc i plan to try it at end of august when annual fee is due.
