Dell G5 Gaming Desktop, Intel Core i7 9700 8 Core, 16GB / 256GB / 1TB HDD, GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER $1903 @ Dell eBay

1360
PDPC20

Hi guys,

I love playing competitive video games and I normally build my own PC and upgrade parts as I go, and I normally detest buying pre-built PCs. Especially true with Dell and custom motherboard and terrible upgradeability.

However, this deal for a Dell G5 seems to be the best on the market for a well-rounded gaming PC so I thought I'd stop lurking and share.

Key points:
CPU: i7-9700 ($580)
Graphics Card: 2070 Super (approx $1000 online, also the best bang for buck GPU imo)
Storage: 1 TB HDD ($70)
Storage: 250 GB SSD ($90)

Want to upgrade later on but limited by Dell's sh*t custom motherboard? Just salvage the above parts and move on. That's already 1740$ of value that you can carry over.

Ram: 16 GB 2666mhz ($140)
(the Mhz is on the low side so you wouldn't want to salvage this if you're an gaming enthusiast, but it will still get the job done for most people.

Motherboard (shit but has decent Wifi capabilities) - ($180)
CPU Cooler ($50?)
Power supply ($100)
Dell 1 year Warranty ($?)
Windows 10 ($200)
Keyboard and Mouse ($60)
Case ($120)

The above numbers are close to current market price or conservative estimates. There's over $2500+ worth of value here imo and this PC will be a beast out of the box.

Glhf!

@Stalker: Yeah I had the same mindset, its a bit too much for my requirements so why splurge and kinda glad i did because of the apparent cooling issues.
            Two week wait :(

  • Very tempted… Thanks OP

    This deal absolutely kills Techfast!

To be fair Techfast is great if you want cheap unbranded/unrated components from China that gets delivered to you LATE and DOA.

By the time you upgrade the components it’s no longer a deal. And don’t forget there is no activated OS with Techfast.

Finally customer service with them has been terrible recently according to some. Check the comments on the past deals it’s all there.

    • +2

I think they have very different product offerings but the Techfast deals are a bit of a lottery in terms of whether you get the specific brand of parts you want - I don't think it's any different to how Dell's stuff is a combination of known brands and OEM stuff with some very low grade aspects (eg cooling, proprietary motherboard).

That being said, for the average Mum/Dad buying kid a gaming PC for their birthday kindof thing, I'd probably suggest the Dell just for peace of mind and knowing Dell's excellent post sales support. Techfast wasn't bad when I bought something from them but granted I had some idea what I was doing and I also didn't mind communicating on "their" timeline rather than just my own.

      • Thanks - You helped me make up my mind. Dell it is! Cheers!

      • -2

Yeah, my Techfast deal has a Thermaltake Litepower PSU which is one of the models that won't blow up and actually has PCIe power connectors. My MOBO is Biostar B350 B45M2 and gets the job done, with VRMs that can handle a 3700x (stock). Also Thermaltake Versa H18 case. My RX 5700 is DOA, kinda, junction temp skyrockets and they're putting in an RMA now. Memory was 2666Mhz but it's B-die so I got it up to 3400Mhz CAS 16. You're right it really is a lottery, but if you wanna play it you can win big.

Excellent example of how to "explain why you think its a good deal" from the posting guidelines.

  • +1

if only it was a 3600+5700xt for cheaper

  • -2

What's the mobo's VRM? Any debug code LED? Now is not the best time to buy a PC if you can still use your older PC. Ryzen 7 3700X would be better too if you use your PC for more than gaming only. 2060 Super was probably the best bang for the buck 'high-end' GPU but I guess it's 2070 Super now? Both have 8GB VRAM just different CUDA cores and clock speed. 2070 S is SLI-ready but SLI is almost dead (2 x 2070 Super will be expensive) and you'd probably be better off getting a 2080 Ti instead.

    • -1

The people who care about any of the points you've raised are probably not the target market for a Dell prebuilt gaming PC.

    • -2

5700XT best bang for the buck 'high end' GPU. You could build something for less with a 3600 and 5700XT that'd probably outperform it as the 3600 has 12 threads over the 8 on the 9700.

      • -1

Yeah but no Ray Tracing (yet) depending if AMD is going to possibly enable it with new driver updates. Sure 3600 is almost as good as 3700X for gaming purpose only, but I said 3700X because it's at similar price with 9700 and has even more cores and threads than 3600.

        • Yeah but ray tracing is a gimmick on these lower end cards. Need a 2080 Super to get satisfactory 1080p perf. I think RDNA2 is gonna get RT but not RDNA.

  • Keep posting stuff like this op!

  • Great deal !!

So did anyone order this? I want to live vicariously through your purchase…

    • just phones up work to make sure I can claim. got the all ok

      • Claim what exactly?

        • Salary sacrifice

  • One of the best features about this PC, albeit small, is the front mounted USB C port. Makes a real difference for me.

  • Hey all, I'm tempted by this offer too but not sure if I should. so many good comments, almost too good as I'm a little lost for the best option. My needs arent too heavy - Play Football Manager 2020 alot (always seems slow with a large database with matches jottery), COD and usual streaming eg netflix and common uses such as lots of web browsing, ms office suite. have a verygood samsung curved monitor and decent keyboard so no need for those. Have a budget around $2k. is this a good option?

    • +2

There is a g5 with 1660ti for near 1200. You should add 8gb ram more and you will be fine. The left amount is for a nice 2k monitor and anything else.

    • +1

Hey man, this PC might be a bit overkill for you. COD seems like the only thing you do that might demand a good cpu. I'd probably get one of the cheaper ones on offer. You can just turn down the graphics a bit for COD if its lagging too much and you'll be fine!

  • +2

Four quite similar options they have, choices choices.

    $1902 for the i7-9700, 16GB, RTX2070 SUPER
    $1631 for the i7-9700, 16GB, RTX2060
    $1427 for the i5-9400, 8GB, RTX2060
    $1155 for the i5-9400, 8GB, GTX1660ti

A real dilemma as I'm upgrading and clueless on the i5>i7 and 1660>2060. My poor i5-46xx and 750ti is floored in Lightroom and Handbrake converting 15 years of photo/video. Also not a serious PC gamer but RDR2 is what I'm aiming for at 1080p, and it would be nice not to upgrade the card for a couple of years. I'm guessing the prices reflect that 10th Gen Intel lands in the next 30-90 days…

    • +1

I know right - and I tried to make sense of the 'value' between each choice for hours yesterday. Ended up cheaping out and getting the i5 1660ti, but will bolster it a bit with a different CPU Cooler, case fan and extra 8gb of RAM. Should do the trick for 1080P gaming for a few years. (I hope!)

    • +1

R2D2 is notoriously known as one of the most graphically demanding games on the market atm. I'd say you'd at least need 2060 to have a pleasant viewing experience. i7 would be noticeably better for Lightroom and photo/video editing too. For your requirements, I'd pick number 2

    • 1660ti is quite similar with 1070 so u can play 1080p high or ultra settings every games now. If rdr2 is your favourite games, another option is purchase a ps4 ( many excellent exclusive games ) or Xbox one x with rdr2 in its game pass library.

Motherboard (shit but has decent Wifi capabilities) - ($180)

    You could buy a half-decent B450 for $120, then add a $60 802.11ax PCI-e wireless card.

  • +1

What are the recommended upgrades? PSU? RAM?

    Cheers

    • +3

I'm still using this XPS 8700 which I found on Ozbargain back in Dec 2013. I had always intended on upgrading PSU, mobo, GPU etc but truthfully the machine has serviced my needs as a casual gamer.
About 2 years ago I upgraded to include a 1TB SSD for the OS and a few weeks ago my machine started overheating and turning off, so I've replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and haven't had any issues since.
Overall I've been really impressed by the Dell. I'm not saying that for hardcore professional gamers that this would be the case, but for the majority of people I'd guess it's enough and you could get by without any upgrades for a long time.

Now that my machine is old enough and I've just bought a 1440p monitor I'm looking to get a whole new machine as pretty much everything I have is incompatible with new motherboards and components! I'm probably going to hold out until end of year when the RTX 30xx series become available.

Keen to hear from anyone else though.

      • Thanks very much for the detailed response

        Cheers

Received mine today, much quicker than the expected June ETA!

    • woah congrats. I better get a move on on the GL850 LCD then!

    • Did you get any Auspost tracking number from Dell? I ordered my on 7th but haven’t received it yet.

      • I ordered on 5th. Still waiting, with a Dell order number provided and the estimated delivery date in Ebay of Wed 27th. My fingers are crossed.

        • My order is shown as Shipped - in transit to local hub. Not sure what it really means.

    • Did it end up with a stock CPU cooler or the pictured Dell one that looks larger?

      • it was stock

  • Mine arrived last week :)
    GL850 coming on Monday :))

  • Noticed a few people having to upgrade the cooler on this. I have an old gem of a heatsink - Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 from 10 years ago.
Is it possible to get that onto this i7 9700?
