  • Lol @ PASTA5.. Should be HORDING5

Can this drive be shucked easily without having to worry about the pin plug work around?

    • +2

      Yes

    • +2

I shucked one of these recently to put in my Unraid Box, no work around required

      • Can you put it back in the enclosure or does shucking void warranty. Considering purchasing one from Officeworks as it's roughly the same price.

        • Enclosure smashes apart and inside you need to peel off a connector.

    • +7

Did one yesterday, shucking virgin and took all of 5 minutes.

      • shucking virgin. Lol

        • +8

I was gentle for the most part, don't worry

          • +2

@Chickenleg: I did the same yesterday and lost my shucking virginity. Took a bit of effort trying to figure out how to get it in but then I realised I needed a stiffer tool to bust it open.

Everything is installed now and works wonderful for storing my uhh… Linux Distros

            • +1

@Menzoberranzan: My first shuck was on a 2.5" 2TB seagate plus and its been running great inside my PS4 ever since.. was harder creating a PS4 usb stick and reinstalling the PS4 OS then the 2 minutes it took to shuck the drive because i rushed it and i wasn't gentle.

  • Thanks for the shucking info purchased one.

Thanks to you as well OP.

  • Will this work as DVR/NVR surveillance storage? I'm looking for an external usb disk for a USB 2.0 NVR

    • +7

This is an SMR hard drive which i don't think will be good for constant writes which would be required on a surveillance system. You need a HDD designed for dedicated surveilence use.

Seagate Skyhawk is an example of one.

      • Eh, I think unless you're doing a huge amount of cams, you'll probably be fine. Just make sure you have a backup.

  • These 4TB drives are so much cheaper, per TB, than 8+TB drives

    • +1

      Probably because it's EOL.

    • +2

8+TB Seagate are not SMR so they're worth premium

      • Yeah it's a helium drive isn't it. Worth the money i suppose.

  • +1

thinking of buying a synology NAS in the near future. would i need the drives from one of these seagatees to fit into it?

    • same boat, not sure if these are NAS specific drives to be on 24/7.

      • +3

These drives aren't designed to be used 24/7. People don't like to hear it but majority of these external drives have not passed the QC and are SMR which means they are louder, take longer to copy and aren't as reliable especially if they are constantly on. There's a reason why they sell so cheap

        • what drives would you recommend for NAS then?

          • +1

@zzzz99: WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf

          • @zzzz99: Seagate 10 TB should work fine, if you're lucky you might even get 8TB PMR in one of these enclosures.

          • +1

@zzzz99: Depends what size you're after. Different companies have specific models made for NAS use. I've used Ironwolfs, WD Ultrastar & Blacks. Read & write speeds are not too far off SSD many times with high end HDDs. They also have much better warranty and sometimes even data recovery included if you need it. Don't go cheap on a NAS setup, it will hurt you later on

@Whisper Quiet: my SSD copies files at 500mbps from another SSD that can do 500mbps.. :) never seen a HDD go over 250mbps average.

Cashless SSD's can drag down to 60mbps after like 5 minutes of copy time if your moving large files making HDD's the king of large file storage.

Also the hard drives I've used over the years are like immortal :) lol they just go and go.

              • +1

@vid_ghost: The burst speeds of my Ironwolf and Ultrastars can reach 2gb/s. When empty those hard drives are crazy good. Sometimes a 2-3gb movie will copy instantly with no loading bar. Average about 220-230 over longer copies. All depends on what drives are being used with each other. My Samsung M.2 has unbelievable burst speeds when copying to an SSD, has done a 7gb file instantly. Burst speeds of my Samsung SSD 860 are very close to my Ironwolf and Ultrastars.

need to find us a deal on the DS420j!

  • Would this be good to go with Xbox one ?
    Thanks.

    • no

      • You can use it with 5 minutes setup via xbox one. Set it up as game drive. Xbox will ask you anyway. Not sure about reliability though.

    • Yes

Same price at JB Hi-fi and Officeworks now

    • Did you have to price match? still says $99 on officeworks website.

    • -2

Called up Officeworks. Still $99 and they dont match ebay deals. Thanks for wasting my time with your uneducated comment.

I've shucked one into my PC, for photos, videos, documents etc.
Not loud at all. Sustained write speed is fine.
As far as reliability goes any hard disk lifespan can be pretty random, that's why you need backups.
I'd guess this one for it's purpose has ok reliabilty odds given it's only 5400rpm so less stressed and goes to sleep when not used.

So it comes down to the purpose you need it for.

    For Windows use an SSD.
For modern large PC games where you need fast loads, use an SSD.
For tons of heavy writing like video editing use a high performance HDD.

But for most storage like videos, documents or photos this is fast, efficient and cheap.

    • good post.
