    Straight outta Crompton!

I know they're a highly regarded roaster, but there has been some much better deals on here lately.

    • +5

There is a reason they are highly regarded, tastes way better than the others, worth paying ~$10/kg or so more than the other recent deals to get the good good stuff imo.

      • tastes way better than …. what? can you give us some examples and names?

Sunset BLVD from Inglewood Coffee Roasters springs to mind as i just received mine yesterday and its barely even drinkable.
My experience trying maybe 30-40 different cafes in the last few years is that the varieties i bought from Five Senses (Crompton Road & Santo Antonio) were better than all but the best professionally made coffees i have received amongst all the cafes i have been to over the years.
And this is using a pretty cheap little espresso machine iv'e got at home, nothing fancy like those $600-700 ones people buy on here.

          • @lordezekiel: Inglewood are also pretty expensive, although when brewed right (Barlog in Docklands uses them + a Slayer machine) are a great bean.

My point being your Pablo & Rusty, Adore, Fox, etc have all had like 40-50% off in recent weeks. I only have a Sunbeam e7000, but can testify they're all good beans.

Definitely not saying they're bad, but the $42 doesn't get my OzBargain juices flowing.

            • @Oldmate88: I bought the Fox deal and didn't think much of the beans, apart from Dusk blend.

@lordezekiel: So true, lordezekiel. I bought a few dud coffee beans last year from different roasters and more just okay ones, even though they all sounded amazing and some had even won awards! I love Crompton Rd, it's one of my faves.

          • @lordezekiel: Lol if you think $600-$700 is fancy don't even think about looking at Italian E61 machines..2.5k minimum, but the consistently good coffee is worth it, and it will last a lifetime if looked after.

Definitely one of our favourite rosters - Five Senses, ONA, Single O are all in a similar league for us, followed closely by Coffee Alchemy for a darker roast.

Just ordered Dukes who we've tried before in Melbourne, tastes okay but probably should have just saved my money - notch above standard fair, but not mind blowing.

Note: I haven't tried crompton, as we normally grab dark horse and hi-fidelity for blends.

@billbro: Finally someone mentioned ONA! Our number one favorite coffee. A local cafe serves them (and amazing food). Between founder and hitman, we prefer hitman. But ONA never runs special!

Do you know which coffee of Five Sense is similar to Hitman?

            • @aec: I drink nothing but Hitman at home haha. Can’t seem to find anything to replace it with.

Got to be the fastest shipping in the country. I ordered from the last deal and it arrived the next day! Upon checking the tracking I realised it came from W.A

These guys are my go to for coffee. Never had an issue and as said before fastest shipping around.

My favourite roaster and my favourite blend

I do still have an unopened 1kg bag from them

But that is about to be opened in the next few days….

  • +1

Well, ended up buying myself a 1kg bag, it was so good last time and there is a lot of good feedback here about 5 senses and the crompton blend.
Now, what to do with that 1kg bag of sunset blvd…

If you've got a worm farm, they would love to wriggle through sunset blvd ;)

Haha, I'll have to try crompton soon I guess.

  • I'm looking to jump on board and get a decent coffee machine now that I'm working from home. Slightly off topic but can you claim one on tax?

  • It says the code expires in 17 days.. what are the chances they pull it earlier ? I still have quite a bit left and would like to order next week

  • Anyone use these beans with BES870? what grind setting do you have it on? It's about a week since roast date so it should be good to drink but I can't get it right though - every coffee I've made has a bitter aftertaste with milk. Still early I guess.

Their website recommends 22g coffee, 44g extraction over 29 seconds. I don't think our basket can fit that much. Tried 20g over 30s but still bitter, might try a coarser grind and extract it over a few seconds less. Interested to see what others have done?

    • When I've had Crompton Rd I've made a double ristretto latte with it. I have a Breville Pro Smart Grinder (I think that's what it's called) and fill up the double espresso basket with the ground beans and then push the single espresso button on my Breville Bambino Plus so I get the syrupy flavours but not bitterness from the coffee.

My grind is on the 23-24 coarseness/fineness settings on the grinder and I grind for approx 12.8 seconds.

      • Cheers, I’m sure that’ll help someone with the grinder haha! For anyone using the in built grinder with the BES870, I found grinding on 8 to get rid of the bitterness. It’s a slightly faster extraction, I use 20g and get 38g out over 21 seconds. I think 7 setting on the grinder will be perfect.

Odd that I can fit 20g of this bean in the basket no problem but any other I’ve tried it would be overflowing and hard to tamp. I’ve also never had to grind one so course, usually it’s 5 or as low as 3 to get a good extraction.

  • Ordered a kilo to SE Melbourne - sent from WA instead of the Melb office 15km away!

Surely it would be cheaper and better to fulfil Melbourne orders from Melbourne…strange.
