$386 for Acer Iconia Tab A500 16GB Wi-Fi Only @ Harvey Norman

670

Hi. Saw this on Harvey Norman website today. I checked last night and it was still $488 previously.

I then went to Officeworks at QV Victoria to beat the price by 5%. The guy working there didn't look happy about it but yeah, I think they'll lower down their price soon too..

So yup, this is should be a good deal for people who have missed out on Harvey Norman's previous deal which was at $386.

  • They have a for this price not long ago and back to normal and $386 again.

  • WOW! great deal, tab prices are coming down pretty quick these days, hope this one may ended up another $99 like HP or mytab

    • That's if ACER decides to drop out from the tablet market. HP will dump their PC division soon. That's why all their PC related products are heavily discounted!

  • yeah, hoping to see and grab a better tab which is under 150$ :)

    • +6

doubt a dual core tab will be $99 unless you wait another 1-2years.
Most companies don't give away tabs like HP does. lol

  • theyre coming down fast due to new Tegra chip out by end of year with promises of 5x performance

    • Exactly.

      Kel-Al looks phenomenal.

Also quite possibly because they are not selling. The Tegra 2 itself is fantastic system but there is quite a bit of talk that all non-Android tablets are doing very poorly.

The demise of the Touchpad is one sign.

There are some amusing articles out there on the subject:

      http://toucharcade.com/2011/08/12/creator-of-instapaper-post…

The question is how low will the current generation go?

      • I think the most should be around $300. While the Kal-El tablets should be around $500-600 if we're just talking about the price of WiFi only tablets.

I think the price of iPads may play a part too. If Apple can sell their new iPad for a higher price others selling Kal-El tablets might sell at that price too or slightly lower to compete. But when you compare the specs, Kal-El tablets to have the right to be more expensive…

        • +1

I still hope iPad 3 come sooner than later

all for the right reasons that Kal-El re-sellers are unable extort us :)

        • +4

Haha I hope NVIDIA won't sell their Kal-Els to Apple so that Apple have to develop their own or get from someone else. That should make it more competitive.

And NVIDIA should learn from Samsung what happens when you supply to Apple to make their iPhones and iPads..

  • whats the go with the 100 dollar e gift voucher?
is that another 100 dollars you can use one something else bringing the effective price of this tab down another 100 bux…?

    eGift Voucher
    $100 Acer eGift Voucher

    Conditions of eGift Voucher
Bonus is by redemption from the supplier. Various postage and handling fees may be applicable in order to receive the bonus and are dependent on the supplier’s offer. Terms and conditions apply, see in store for full details.

    • That's for apps, music, and videos if I remember correctly.

      • +3

Music and books - not for apps.

    • You will have to do the cash back on Acer's site. Then print out the form to stick in your receipt before mailing them. They also say they are not responsible if the mail is lost along the way (-.-)

Then only you get the $100 worth of eBooks and music.

  • +4

Got one form OW with 5%beats at $366

  • Their (HN) website showing correctly at $386.

  • +4

this means OW have to change their price again soon LOL

    so much work for them

    • +2

Yup. The guy doing the price beat for me was surprised and complained to another staff asking why Harvey Norman put the price up and now decreased it again.

Maybe it is their tactic to make OW reconsider their price beat policy….

    • +5

At least, they still earned after beating 5%, unless Harvey make their profit less than 5%.It doesn't matter what price it is,OW earned the money and Harvey helped advertise the product.LOL

      • Oh yeah that is very true, haha!

  • hmm, which is a better tab overall? the Asus Transformer or this Acer Iconia?

    • +1

in a few words, transformer has a better screen, iconia has built in full size usb port. my 2 cents..

    • +11

I would say the Iconia Tab.

      PROS:

      1. You get a full size USB port for example, that you can use to put in a wireless keyboard, mouse, (or both if you have a bundle, though I have not tried it yet). You don't have to pay extra $$ to get the keyboard dock in order to get the full size USB ports.

      2. Better camera with LED flash (I have not actually compared the two before but read from reviews that Transformer's is not so good)

      3. Cheaper :D?

      4. Personally I do find the Transformer a bit weird to hold. The back looks and feels nice but when holding the whole thing, not as solid-feeling compared to Iconia Tab.

      5. Better build quality. As long as you got one that does not creak at the right side or the left back panel (it happened to me twice, respectively, to the Tabs I got from JB-HiFi before the perfect one I got from OW today), Iconia Tab feels very well built and I personally like the cool metal feel when you pick it up.

      CONS:

      1. Transformer's screen IS slightly brighter. And better viewing angles too because of the IPS. But you usually won't look at screen from such angles anyway.

      2. Transformer's keyboard dock gives extra battery (another 6hrs I think). But I suppose with Iconia's full USB port you should be able to find a power pack to recharge your Tab without adding weight and thickness to it.

      3. Transformer already has Android 3.2 while Acer's just got delayed, according to Acer Malaysia.

OK that's all for now. Just my thoughts…

      • i'm sure i've read somewhere that you can't charge the iconia through the USB.

        • Really? I thought I read about that for the Transformer instead..

But here I meant about getting those power packs you see available for iPhones, iPods, other phones, etc.

        • Oops my bad, apparently all tablets still can't charge over USB like phones. Something to do with the 2 cell battery, power needed, etc:

          http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104417

      • Oh one more Pro for the Iconia is its speakers! Can't believe I've forgotten about it. It's loud, clear and gives you the surround feel, compared to Transformer's. Iconia Tab's speakers are also Dolby-powered so it should be even better using the headphones (i've yet to confirm this because I haven't tried using headphones yet).

      • Lol I keep replying myself.

Another Con for Iconia Tab is the apparently infamous short charging cord. Not sure about the Transformer's.

You'll just have to try charging the Tab when not using. Or try find a longer one. I saw today at OW they used a very long cable to charge their Tab so it shouldn't be too hard to find one? Maybe I'll ask them the next time I visit OW.

  • Another PRO to Transformer is that its brand is more reputable than Iconia.

    • +1

Yeah, ASUS computers are built better than Acer's right?

And also, there's the rumour of Transformer 2 with Kal-El…

  • Lol it's interesting that only 2 people that have +'ed this deal commented. While the other 29 did not…

    • Ok sorry! I was just amusing myself…

  • +3

waitin for transformer2, but i cant hold anymore. Everyday I look price of transformer1. I'm doubting if I can keep my pocket till transformer2

    • Exactly. I am also currently holding out for transformer 2. Cheapest is still 599. I reckon that when transformer 2 + keyboard comes out it'll cost 768 like when transformer 1 just came out.

      • but atleast transformer one prices will be slashed ;)

      • Same here. When will transformer 2 release? Thinking to get one on amazon.

        • maybe around OCT well Hopefully

        • By the end of the year since that's what NVIDIA said about Kal-El powered tablets.

      • Currently the cheapest transformer 1 + keyboard dock in aus is 540+ i rekon

        • Are you sure? Not the price of the tablet itself?

        • Now where did you obtainthat price? is it for 32gb?

      • Yeah should be around that price, hopefully. As long as they don't end up marking the price like HTC's latest one in the US..

        • its price for tablet 16g plus keybord, just saw ozbargrain$ 600 which is tablet 32g plus keyboard.my point of view, 16g is more than enough consider tablet itself has microsd slot and keyboard has 2usb slots. Using mobile, can't remember the exact web address

        • $540 compared to $570 (after OW price match) seems not that good of a deal.

        • Huh? Where is it being sold at?

  • +4

I got the Kogan.com.au model last week for $199. Would not recommend it at all and seems to be a lot of trouble to return it.

    • You need to pay the delivery although they have 7 days satisfaction guarantee. If you return you ended up lose about $30-$50.I sold my 24"LED after few days having it, as the quality is not what i expected.

  • Seems to be a great price for this tablet, they keep getting cheaper. Thanks OP!

    • Yup! No problem! Did you get end up getting one?

      • Not yet, debating whether I should get one or spend $400 on the next decent Lenovo/Asus laptop deal w/ Core i3, 4GB ram etc.

        • Oh I see.. get a proper laptop then if you don't already have one. Because laptops are able to do more than tablets.

  • ARGH! I cant decide between the iconia and the transformer, Seems in the review the Acer is a little better (especially with the USB port) but the Transformer with the keyboard and 16 hour battery would be better for work use…What would ozbargainers get if it was 75% for work and 20% for play, and 5% just to tell people I have a tablet :P ?

    • Doesn't the transformer dock have a usb port as well? You can just use that port while working =)

      • Yeah 2 actually. Hmm I think the Transformer it is.
When is Dick Smith/JBs going to join in the price drop fun I wonder..

        • Here's a recently posted one from the good guys for $429.
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/52630
Then you just have to find a cheap keyboard dock somewhere.

        • I think OW is the best to buy from with their satisfaction guarantee policy. I have learned not to buy from JB Hi-Fi now because I have gotten two Iconia Tabs from them that creaked. And third time's the charm, got a good one from OW after JB refunded me.

        • Also found the price of Transformer 32GB WiFi + Keyboard dock for $599 too at GG. Cheapest!
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/52636

    • What kind of work is it that you will be using on the tablet? Do you need to type?

  • $299 NEXT month?

    • At best, next year.

      • it will be the same price as samsung galaxy tab on previous telstra fire sale few months ago

        • Maybe, or maybe not. At any rate it (the Galaxy) is selling for 350 bucks on Ebay atm lol.

        • +1

You mean the old Galaxy Tab? Maybe because Telstra is trying to get rid of them because it will be forever stuck with 2.3 and not upgraded to Honeycomb?

        • @nanoronline

that is absolutely correct, the new tab is called 7.7, has super amoled+ and exynos

however, the old tab is still wonderful to use if you managed to grab it for less than 250. It outclasses ALL yum cha tablets from China at the same price range.

        • @nanoronline, you must be an optimist, Galaxy Tab owners would be over joyed if they are stuck on Gingerbread. (whenever Telstra decide to get off their bum and actually releases it)

        • +1

          @annoynimous:

True, the Galaxy Tab is much better than all the other Android 2.1+ cheap tablets from China.

          @garratt:

Oops, I did not know that Gingerbread is not yet available for Telstra Galaxy Tab users. But you should be able to root and flash one, no?

  • Officeworks has dropped their price too to $386

  • What about a refurb unit (pretty much brand new, Acer Australian stock) for $349 delivered? That a good deal? Looking for an Android tab better then the orginal telstra Samsung galaxy, I find that clunky.

    • +1

anything below $400 is a good deal mate.

the tegra 2 can still perform like a champ despite all the complaints from casual users. It needs more tweaking just like how we would tweak our PCs.

    • @zhenjie where are the refurb units?

    • I think it might be better to just pay $37 more and get one from OW since their policy is better and you can easily return it for a new one should there be any defect, especially if it is a refurbished unit. You get one year of manufacturer's warranty too. Win-win!

  • Is Acer going to provide free upgrade to Icecream sandwich for this tab?

    • Not sure. It just all depends on whether Google's hardware requirements for ICS is supported by the Iconia Tab or not. But seeing how the recent news say that ICS may not be as big as we have expected, perhaps Iconia Tab can support ICS then. Just not sure about Jelly Beans..

  • can you connect bigpond wireless USB stick to this tablet to connect to wireless?

    • nope. I don't think so

    • If you mean that the USB stick just need to be powered to provide a WiFi network, then perhaps?

Otherwise, just get a Pocket WiFi. That should solve your problem!

    • huawei and vodafone modems apparently work. BUT… you have to install a custom rom.

      • Then I suppose it is better to just get a Pocket WiFi then, which can connect up to 6 devices. Pretty handy and doesn't drain extra battery from your Tab.

  • I bought it from H.N. $386.
Upgraded OS to v3.1 over the air

  • Price gone back to $578.00

  • The deal is back….

  • Thanks for telling me that. But how do I edit this? Is it a new deal must be posted instead?
