    • yea man. I am happy to get XPS now.
Last comment at 2.30 am and first comment at 6.00 am. I think we both dont sleep :)

I think we both suffer from this:

ozbargainitis n. The constant fear of missing out on a good deal while sleeping or performing other necessary daily activities.

        • +1

          lol true.
But the day, I dont check ozbargain, the best deal of the month is gone.
My other half does not like me looking for deals here. I already have bought things, which I dont think I need, but could not resist with such good bargains.

        • the mrs bit sounds like a typical day in the life of an ozbargainer :) which was the deal of the month that you missed out on? Lenovo T420?

        • yes. Can you believe, I missed them both. But Happy, as I need USB3 and Full HD Screen.

        • touche!

    • +1

don't you have to be eligible for family tax benefit to claim via education tax refund, otherwise you cannot claim it?

  • +2

back on the deal, I think the 9 cell upgrade is totally worth it, works out to only $18ish more after discount - though not a big fan of protrusions from closed laptops… hmm…

    • +1

But, dont that make Laptop more bulky, its already quite big.

    • +1

No it's not. You want battery life, get a different laptop. Getting a bulky battery that takes the battery life from two to three hours and makes the laptop even harder to carry around is pointless. These aren't portable laptops by any stretch of the imagination.

      • the 9-cell takes battery life past 8hrs with wifi off and screen on low brightness.

i actually like the extra 'bulk' of the 9-cell…makes it easier to grip the laptop with less chance of it slipping

        • +2

          8 hours? You're dreaming.

  • +3

"Very Good deal for the Best specs in a Laptop, you can imagine"

    hmm I can imagine a lot :p

    • +1

I thought that was a pretty bold claim from the OP as well :)

      SSD
      higher resolution screen as standard
      light in weight
      maybe even 13.3" form factor

these would be nice to have to make it even "bester" specced IMHO :p

  • +1

Laptop very heavy, but fast and the fhd screen is great, sound fantastic. My only complain is the keyboard, this is definitely the worst keyboard I tried in laptop.

  • Check out the dell outlet m plenty of XPS 15's going from $899 with the same specs - http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

    • I dont think so. They lack : Full Hd , Blue ray writer & 8 GB Ram are missing.
In my case, they lack Win Prof. 64 bit and 2 years warranty.

    • They're not the same spec. And they have 1366x768 screens. The only reason to ever buy a laptop with that resolution is if you have a budget of less than $500 or want an 11" screen.

  • +2

    Thats on fast HDD

    • +2

Thats what I am thinking! 72,000rpm, it might take off…

    • youre telling me! i wonder what it sounds like

    • +1

LOL! Thats what I was thinking as well 72,000 RPM HDD :O

Think the OP meant 7.2K :)

      • yes. u saved me :). Corrected.

  • Definitely nice :D

Though just pointing out while the XPS 15 has the GT540 the XPS 17 has the GT555 card; quite a decent bit better. The 540 isn't shabby though, I've got the XPS 15 and can still play quite a few games at full HD, Assassin's Creed can even have fully maximised settings :o

Also note that they've upgraded the processors recently, the base models now have a 2670QM rather than a 2630QM - it's got more fasterer ;)

    • true, I got the base 2630QM last time and it was quite good. I was thinking Dell to have deal on XPS15z too. They look sleek and sexy.

  • How does Dell stack up to Asus in terms of reliabilities? Should I get more warranty on the DELL? (if I buy one that is….)

I'm tossing this up with the Samsung RF711 or even Asus N73SV-V2G-TY533V i72630QM…or should I wait for the post Xmas sale…decisions decisions…

    • I find dell of better quality. I had an old inspiron laptop still going strong after 4 years. But i decided to replace it with an Asus N61J. It was a floor model and the ram gave up after about 3 weeks. Had it replaced for a new one. The trackpad gave up after about 6 months on the new one, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt and the battery just lost the ability to hold charge (only lasts about 15 mins on full charge now). Just got frustrated with the lappy and sold it to a friend.

I replaced it with a dell studio xps 16. Havent had a problem since, other than the ram popping out and somehow corrupting my registry. I got a 3 year warranty on mine since it was being phased out when I bought it (might replace it with a newre model down the road :D).

The screen on the Dell is just leagues ahead of the Asus. I find the Asus screen just too washed out.

      • cool, thx for the info! :)
But I wonder if there will be loads of discounts coming after xmas…

        • Playing the waiting game is an endless cycle.

I bought mine around about the same time last year. A week later it went up massively in price.
The by xmas the laptop would have gone down by about $100 and the deals would probably include $100 off or free 8gb ram/bluray/FHD screen. If youre in the market for a new laptop id say this is a pretty good time to buy.

    • They are with i72670QM and u have a choice with FHD screen, operating system, ram, backlit keyb, wireless card, etc… I like Asus too, but they cannot be customized like Dell. XPS are known to be very well build machines. But that said, problems can come in any laptop.

      • yea that's what I thought, u can't customise Asus or samsung like a buffet…lol

  • Do DELL normally give out any more discounts than this?? ie. more than 30% off??

    • 30% Dell discount is the largest Dell discount I have seen. Normally, it is only 10% or 15%.

      • Yep 30% is BIG. Theres always 8% from NRMA and usually 15% on "SALE" days. You probably wont see prices like these until 3-5 months later.

  • +1

After the 2 lenovo thinkpad deals this one's crap value in comparison.

    • I like Thinkpads but don't they have crap screens?

      • +1

        1600 x 900 on a 14" isn't a crap screen (last lenovo t420 deal)

        • It's crap compared to Dell's 1080 B+RGLED screen.

  • Do these laptops have "switchable" grahics? (to save battery and run on intel graphics)?

    • yep!

      • thx, but it doenst say on the dell website tho…

        • All 2nd gen i7's have them.

        • cool, thanks mate!

  • Good luck with new Dell OP, Hibernation problems can be unbearable.

    • what's this hibernation problem about?

      • It was restarting and not switching off, when hibernating. Dell told me its motherboard defect and needs to be replaced, I asked for a new laptop or refund. They gave me refund.

  • -1

This is so cheap. I bought an XPS 1730 in 2008 for 3 grand.

  • Wow, what timing. I've just started looking for a new laptop that is 1920X1080 capable and the XPS were nice but more expensive than the ASUS or Gigbyte ones I was looking at. I even priced them this morning, but I guess not via this method.

  • The Dell Outlet has some nice XPS 15z for sale atm with full HD screens. Slimmer and lighter than the normal XPS. If only I hadn't bought a new lappy in February….. argh.

  • very good deal…maxed everything out and gets Discounted Price - $1,768.40. This is much better value compare to macbook pro. :(

  • This deal is one of the best i've seen on XPS. The 30% is counted on the TOTAL price (incl. addt config). Much better than last time!

  • You returned the last one due to hibernation, so how do you know the new one will not have the same problem? Same line of CPUs and same chipset.

  • Any thoughts on the display options:
    HD+ WLED TL (1600x900) +$0.00
HD+ WLED TL (1600x900) with Multi Touch VS +$147.07
FHD WLED TL (1920x1080) with 3D glasses +$284.13
    FHD WLED AG (1920x1080) +$56.21

    • The last one, anti glare + full HD is useful.

3D is gimmicky and too expensive.
Can't see the point of multi touch in this device.

For the 15" get the B+RG LED, almost the best screen available on a laptop

      • Is anti-glare really that good? I think I might be weird as i think a glossy screen looks more vibrant…lol

        • If there was a full hd trulife without 3d option then you oculd pick glossy, but the full HD resolution is definitely worth it. AG looks slightly less vibrant but it's a godsend when you are working. For the 17" all the screens are average LCD panels anyway , you're not going to get great colours out of them.

        • Also would you actually notice much difference between full HD or not on a 17" laptop screen??

        • +1

Yes you would, it's a massive difference. It's not about full hd movies or games, it's about having 20% more pixels vertically, so you have to scroll less with documents and browsing and with full hd screens you can have two browser windows or documents open side by side. For $56 it's the best value upgrade of all, it affects the thing you will be looking at all the time.

        • I think that makes sense :)
But I'm still a bit unsure about the $1400 price tag tho….Do I have any cheaper options that has 17.3" FHD and discrete graphics???

        • Maybe https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=3397&typeID=23

          Look around.

Though do you really want the 17" for any particular reason? The 15" with the full HD screen upgrade is $12xx.

        • thanks scynaz! I will think about it… :)

    • I went for FHD WLED AG (1920x1080) +$56.21, as I wanted the 1080p but the 3D isn't worth the cost IMO.

    • Is there any difference in picture quality between the FHD 3D TrueLife and Anti-Glare?

I'd much prefer the Anti-Glare, but 16GB is only available with 3D :(. I spoke with a Dell Sales Rep and unfortunately they use a different chassis for 3D, so if you order without the 3D it comes with only memory slots.

      • +1

Upgrade the ram yourself, seriously, it takes 5 minutes and takes no skill.

Though to be honest, anyone who actually needs 16GB RAM would probably know how to upgrade RAM themselves, why do you need 16GB RAM?

        • The problem is that without 3D there are only two slots so you cannot upgrade the RAM.

I develop software and run multiple VMs, so I'll easily use 16GB of RAM.

      • I see, never realized that, that is very strange.

      • You can head over to the metabox links I posted below, come with 4 nice dimm slots and will be cheaper than a 3d dell and less useless.

  • It is a shame the memory maxes out at 8GB, otherwise brilliant.

    • Add your own memory it's easy. The 17" has 4 dimm slots.

    • From memory, if you choose the 3D screen, and then head to the memory page, there is an option for 16gb and 12gb ram.

Once you select your RAM, go back to the display page and change it to whatever you like.

      • Doesn't work.

I spoke with a Dell Sales Rep and unfortunately they use a different chassis for 3D, so if you order without the 3D it comes with only memory slots.

Remember, for anyone thinking of buying these for gaming: THESE ARE NOT GAMING LAPTOPS. The 15" has a mediocre graphics card and the 17" has one that can best be called adequate. For decent gaming performance your only option in this price range is to buy from http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/d418_meta… or logicalblueone.com.au which offer real high end graphics cards. Don't be fooled by the 3GB memory in the 555M it's still a mid range card.

If you remove the windows license from the laptops linked above (they can be had cheaper form elsewhere) the price of a metabox laptop is similar (once you upgrade the dell to a full HD screen, and if you don't , you sohld jsut buy a cheaper laptop, you're wasting your money) and you get a GTX 560M which is a decent gaming graphics card, far better than the GT 555M.

    • To get the same as the XPS 17 with TV Tuner, 17.3" -> 15.6", 9 cell -> 8-cell, 1.5TB -> 750GB, GT 555M -> GTX 560m you pay $1,466.35 over the Metabox brand $1,797.00.

Not sure if it's worth the upgrade from a mid-range GFX card to a high end card, and miss out on some other features like better audio and TV tuner, etc.

      • You can get the Metabox P151HM1-M without windows for $1300.
USB TV tuners are cheap if you really need one. 15.6" is easier to carry around and it's full HD - did you count the cost of that upgrade on the Dell? Does the dell really have better audio?

As I said, if you're buying to play games, the metabox is a comparable system with much superior graphics. If not, the Dell's alright.

        • Audio on XPS is good. They have a sub woofer at the bottom and it has quite amazing sound. Out of curiosity, why you need a laptop without windows. you want to load linux or pirated windows?
For gaming reviews, there are a couple of videos for that to check before buying.

        • Yes, I included the audio upgrade in the price comparison. Yes it also can be about portability. I do see the performance differences between GT 550 and GTX 555. My current one is using a Radeon HD4570 512MB … so even the 550 is an improvement :)

        • A lot of people have a windows license from work or as students and students and teachers can get license for much less than $100.

      • Yeah, I will be more concern about the display panel as long as you are going to use it for the life of the laptop.

For "real" gaming with laptop, a free hand sauna comes with it. Use a USB keyboard then, a 15" screen is far away and too small. "Real" gaming, no choice but a desktop please.

    • Your 'mediocre' graphics card is an average person's 'awesome,' this is a very good 30% off a known and trusted quantity with good service and return policies. It's simply a click > basket > purchase without the worry of having to tinker with anything (eg dropping the Windows License option) to squeeze a little bit more gaming performance that will be negligible to 99% of people out there.

      • -1

Wow I got voted down for that comment. I love this site, any comment not catering to the lowest common denominator is voted down, I get voted down for telling how you can get a better gaming laptop for $1300 with a full hd screen.

  • how hard would it be to upgrade the graphics card later on these units specifically? anyone with experience?

    • +1

      It's soldered on, it's impossible.

      • challenge accepted!

    • +1

It's a laptop. What you buy is what you get.

  • I bought XPS a month ago and I've been real pleased with it.
The 1080p looks great, build quality is good and games run really well

    • yes. they dont look that good. but works well..

  • good deal..better than previous deal 1 month back where they offered free upgrades to 8gb RAMS(default was 4gb) and Blu-ray. still wondering whether if was it a mistake for not upgrading to Full HD, money was one of my concerns anyway. :/ overall, good good laptop! a screw came loose though 3 weeks after use, would make noise if i shook the laptop. eventually i got it out, dell couldn't help me identify where is was from. does makes some fan noise that your skype mates might not like, esp when graphics is on high performance.

  • How does this moneyback co works? I've already signed, how will they know what I've bought?

    • Go to moneybackco -> Dell -> Click here to visit this merchant and earn moneyback…
click this link to go to dell and purchase normally like you do.
Moneybackco tracks cookies and orders you make from them and it takes 2-4 months, but you can see amount in your account and can get it back to ur bank or paypal ac. They do have 10 dollars a year fees, I suppose.

  • This is the 3rd time this year Dell has had their 30% off sale. The 17inch model with 1080p display & BR burner is very tempting.

Does anyone know of a 17inch 1080p PC notebook with aluminium unibody similar to the MacBookPro? There are few 15inch models but i have not seen a 17inch one. Don't want to buy the MBP to run Win7 on it. Plus it is double the price of this one.
    tks

    • No, they are not like macbookpro. They are a bit thick and ugly loooking. Good to have them as an alternative to your desktop. You can see various videos on youtube playing games on them and they are quite good in performance.
Rest of the body of XPS is plastic. XPS15z is comparable to macbook.

    • Dunno what macbookpro looks like…never been a mac fan. but this may be close to it:

      http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/detail/productPreviewRead…

    • HP Envy 17. You pay a premium but you get top end graphics in a slim package. The XPS 17 ios a heavy beast next to it.

  • Got this last time and graphics card has been an absolute nightmare. I can hardly do anything that requires use of the card. For instance watching YouTube vids.
