Optus 5G Coverage maps available here

    • +5

Those maps are so wrong. Optus has a crapload of blackspots where you’ll be lucky to get 1 or 2 bars of 3G.
Anyone that travels on Sydney trains near Homebush/Strathfield or near macdonaldtown can confirm. And I live a couple of km away from Parramatta, no 4G signal here, let alone 5G.

  • seems legit.

  • -5

    No thanks to 5G

  • Unlimited?

    • Says so

  • +1

    Targeted?
5G available to .02% of the population?

    • +20

      Targeted?

no , anyone can move to the 5g area

      • +2

Ah, so it just costs $70/month and a NEW HOUSE… bargain

        • It can be cheaper though. Find a friend living in the 5G area and offer to pay for their 5G Optus connection. Then find a spot outside their house where the wifi signal is excellent

    • It isn't just Optus 5G coverage. It is a subset of that. I was surprised how small the coverage still is even after the latest map update.

    • Like nbn I guess

  • +1

you just need an address in a 5g area to get the 5g plan/modem. it will fall back to 4g if 5g is not available.

    • Not on this deal, if you look on optus's website you might find some ;)

  • Where are the 2500 sites turned on by March 2020? Cannot find any information on future sites.

    • I been looking for this as well, heard a number of sites being turned on for March 2020, and then haven't heard a peep from Optus since then.

    • +5

They’re right next to the finished NBN by 2016

  • +3

Be aware that the modem/router is very restricted in what you can do routing wise. Also there is no public IP address, so again this will restrict some people.

    • Are you saying Optus keep you on an RFC1918 private subnet?
If be very surprised if this was true.

      • I am not sure that Optus operate their network the same way as ABB. However the end result is no access to your home network remotely even with dynamic DNS. The only option is reverse VPN, which adds a cost, loses reliability and adds complexity.

        • Maybe not exactly but they do employ CG-NAT and I can confirm it’s a PITA if you are used to having remote access into your own home network.

  • +2

I have it. My place in nbn ready mid this year. There’s no way I’m getting nbn

    • +1

      Wise choice… NBN sucks!

      • I did in 2/2 places I've lived. Currently getting 98mbps with no issues. Drops to and 75 during the worst peak

    • +1

Even their 4G home wireless blows nbn out of the water any time of the day. I am extremely content with mine for 68 bucks.

  • Interesting, no 5G in Brisbane CBD but there is in a few suburbs.

  • +2

    checks map

    Easily in zone.

    checks address

    Nope!

    • I had the same thing. I called up Optus and they confirmed I was good. Had 5g for 6 months and no regrets to turning off NBN.

      • What’s your average speed and minimum?

        • +2

Average is about 200 - 250. Best was 350. Doesnt go below 50.

They annoying bit is the 5G dropping out and having to reset the modem.

  • +1

cant get this if address is not in 5G zone. I am ok with 4G while waiting on 5G roll our but Optus won't let me sign up

    • If you have a friend or family member you is in the 5G zone you can sign up with their address.

      • Be careful on this though, from what I've heard online, it may not be the full 4G speed, just on the 4G network. If its wrong I'd love to be corrected as otherwise I'd love to jump on it just for 4G

  • What sort of speed people have been able to get on the 5G broadband network, is it speed limited to 50mbps?

    • 50mbps is minimum.

5G speeds are very fast and approach or exceed 1Gbps or higher with most real world speeds being more like 200-500mbps

    • +4

On Average, I get around 380mbps down, and 40mbps up.
      On a bad day, I get 150mbps.
I Live very close to the tower. I can physically see it from my window.
The issues i've been having, is response times are quite bad.
On my phone, it struggles to load things fast, so i tend to use 4g on my phone…. kinda weird.

      • 5G is line of sight, so you should always be able to see the tower from the modem.

        • I don’t have line of sight and get 410 / 35

      • +2

OzJason: I Live very close to the tower. I can physically see it from my window

Do you glow in the dark?

      • -1

Any side effect with radiation living so close to the tower?

    • I average about 150mbps down and 40mbps up. Located in Brisbane.

Had the service for about 30 days now. Found it to be reliable and the equipment easy to use. Previously had ADSL2+ (our place was skipped during NBN roll-out) so enjoying the honeymoon period of 'super fast' internet.

I have a plaster wall and glass window between the modem and the line of sight to the tower which is about 500m away. I can see the tower from my balcony at the pub on top of the hill.

I have had speeds of up to 400mbs down at 3am in the morning.

Optus provided a month of 'intense' support where I had a dedicated customer service agent. We played around with a few positions for the modem in the house but I settled on one which may sacrifice a little bit of speed to keep the modem in a more accessible and convenient location. Hope this info helps.

      • Hi perko87,
Can I ask, have you experienced any issues connecting to random https sites from your Optus 5G service. The reason I ask is that there are many users on the Optus 4G wireless broadband service who are having this issue as per the following forum (which ironically I cannot access unless I go via a VPN service):

        https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Broadband-Telephony/optus-h…

The problem appears to be MTU fragmentation related effecting one or more Optus routers.

        Interested in your feedback. Cheers

        • Being new to Optus and not being across the details of the problems in that thread, I can confirm I just opened that link you posted from my mobile (Telstra 4G but which is currently connected to the Optus 5G home wireless router).
And I did the same from my PC connected to the wireless via Optus 5G supplied equipment and no issues at all.

I can honestly say I haven't noticed any issues connecting to any websites…been smooth sailing at my end.

    • +1

I get 150mbps down at all times.

And unlike others here, I can't see the tower from my window!
Google maps suggests I'm about 800 metres away from it.

      • How do you check where the optus towers are in google maps?

        • Download the optus@home app, go to support and you can go through the 5G setup guide. No account required, shows the location and distance to towers

  • only issue is not many places have 5g and they won't sign you up. i called. Even though the map seems to have it for me i cant seem get it.

  • I find it funny that an address on the opposite side of the street in a different suburb has 5G but I don't.

    • my office is next door to the Telstra exchange in Parramatta and we can't get it lol

      • +3

What would make you think that being next door to a Telstra exchange would offer any advantage in getting an Optus mobile broadband service? Do they have an Optus 5G tower in their roof?

        • the Exchange has most of the towers on it

          • @Limboz888: I would be surprised if an Optus tower was on a major Telstra exchange.

      • We are in Parramatta CBD George St and cannot get NBN. Stuck on two ADSL2± connection which is load balanced.

        • i'm next to the exchange at Parra CBD and can't get NBN either LOL

  • I wonder what 5G will be like for gaming considering ping on 4G is not great when compared to your typical home connection.

    • +2

This was the first thing I tested. The speed was very similar to cable.
Didn't suffer from any connection drop outs either.

  • +4

So considering $200 start up fees, and taking into account the 1 month free, it is more like $75.42/month.

  • How ridiculous. I'm in a 5G zone and it's not available to me, nor is anywhere in the suburb! Are only certain 5G zones authorised for home broadband?

    • Dont stress too much about the map. Just call up and they can verify. This happened to me and I pushed back and they confirmed I could get it.

      • +5

Rep: "Sorry you don't have 5G anywhere in your area right now. You can sign up to alerts on our website for when it is available"
Me: "How can that be? I'm using it right now? My phone is literally on 5G"
Rep: "…..I'm not sure what to say to that Sir but there is no 5G service in your area"

Really…it's not worth the effort lol. I tried an address directly in the middle of their coverage map for the suburb and surprise surprise 'not available'.

        • +1

Yep I had the same thing. I said your website says I can get it. The rep said, im just going off my screen but I can get the technical team to look into it. I told them to go speak to the technical team NOW. 5 mins later they came back and said I could get 5G.

Like signing up to this service was an absolute CLUSTERF&*K but im happy I have it now.

          • @nedski: Might give that a go. I've been as far as I can tell, in the area since the very first day, but it says not available. Tried my whole street and all not available. I figured it was due to poor LOS with the tower since we are in a bit of a gully. Will give them a call. Even if I could just trial it for a month would be nice.

edit: Tried online chat. No luck. Might give them a call if I get a chance.

            • @[Deactivated]: Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
I just sat here on my Note10+ connected to Optus 5G, and just for the hell of it after today's shenanigans I thought I'd ask their fb team whether or not their was 5G service in my suburb, whether that be home broadband OR just for mobile, whatever existed.

"No sorry, there's no 5G service available in your area".

              Idiots.

    • It's only certain 5G zones according to Whirlpool.

      • Yeah someone from Adelaide just called me up to say it's only certain 5G zones and other 5G zones such as my suburb they're only authorised to do mobiles.

  • So you get unlimited and faster speeds for 2 dollars more per month compared to their 4g. Sounds fair….not.

    • It’s a great deal, super fast and very cheap.

  • Another Pr1ck tease deal from Optus I still give positive for those who can get it which was stated

  • +1

It seems my address is in the zone, can the Nokia modem they supply be bridged ,so I can just connect it to my router ? I have a 4G Huwaei now but that won't work with 5G. I tired a little Googling but all I seemed to be able to find was marketing speil

    • Should be able to. The Nokia comes with Ethernet, just disable the wifi or go on a different channel.

      • Yeah, I saw it had ethernet but that doesn't necessarily men you can bridge it ?

        • Run a cable, turn off the wifi of the Nokia… sorted. No need for wifi bridging.

  • So will 5G replace NBN? Is this gonna be the to-go internet at home?

    • No, shitty as the Australian NBN is.

    • I get 400/30 speeds. I’ve got FTTB NBN also, but about to disconnect as it’s far worse.

  • Both my neighbours on each side have this plan, I cannot get 5G home at my address.. their reason.. they don't want to slow down everyone else, because they guarantee 50Mbps, so its only offered to X number of houses..

  • is this mmWave 5G? or fake 5G?

  • Is the start-up fee refundable if the speeds don't meet their guarantee?

  • So is this portable guys? So if I get it, I can take it to my folks place? (anyone doing this currently? Will Optus care?)

Not fussed if I get 5G there or whatever it drops down to, just want internet there as they have major issues with their telco not fixing the adsl line in due to incoming NBN which is a few mths away at least.

    • No, they will kick you off.

    • NO, get the 4G deal if that's what you intend to do.

      • Thanks guys!

    • It's portable. My friend signed up with a 5G address but using in an area with only 4G and consistently getting 50/20 or higher.

Unlimited $70 month, first month free, high quality Nokia 5G Wifi 6 Modem router. Better deal than NBN 50 so why complain.

In the future if Optus happens to install a 5G tower in his area, then it will be a bonus - icing on the cake

      • Very relevant!

  • What sort of ping do you get from Optus 5G? Telstra 5G provides around 20ms.
