[Refurb] BenQ 4K Projector TK800 $1039 + $18 Shipping or Free Pickup NSW @ BenQ

60

This is the cheapest I've seen it. Still about $1600 new from Costco. I would get one but I really love the bright colours on my Epson but I believe this projector gets its high ANSI from its bright whites instead. I would love to hear feedback from others who might own this!

  • I'm sure people know this from the price tag, but "True" 4K == XPR in this case.

    • Yes, also known as faux k.

It's like the Lossless BT codecs (they're not lossless).

We're on our second one. Our first one failed after about 3 months. Costco replaced it. Second one is just coming up on a year. Lost 1 pixel.

Really is quite good value for money, but doesn't compete with the 5000$ 4K projectors obviously. Blacks aren't terrific. Is a little bit noisy but we sit directly under it unfortunately.

Having said all that, I think it is a good buy at 1500$ new. Refurb for 1K$ sounds pretty good to me.

    • Have you tuned or optimised your settings? Do you find a noticeable difference between HD and 4k with hdr?

    • thank you for the insight :)

  • If you're noise sensitive, this projector is not for you.

  • Really close to pressing the button on this one. In the process of building out a theatre room at the moment. Only 4.8x3.6m, so not a lot of room to work with. Me being the greedy guts I am, wants to get as large a screen as I can and research has shown that a 4k projector shortens the optimal viewing distance.

    So questions:
    - Will this XPR projector look blurry if I'm pushing the boundaries of optimal viewing distance?
    - Given I have a smaller room, is the sound of the projector bad enough to disturb us if our primary content is movies / tv shows?

If not, what sort of price range do I need to look at to get a reasonable looking picture, and can someone recommend a model?

Very new to the scene and as with most things, the more I research, the more confused I get with options! So any advice is good.

    Thanks!!

Look into a short throw projector. This would take out need for longer throw distance.
Leave some $$ for a decent surround sound system.

    • I don't think you are going to have a problem. If the projector is at the back of the room, you'll get an almost 3 m wide picture. This projector is a light canon and the picture is likely to be bright and clear. I doubt that focus will be an issue. Check calcs below.

My three biggest issues with this projector:
      - Rainbow effect that I can see, due to being a one wheel DLP
      - Loud in 4K (but near silent in HD)
      - No Lens Shifts functions, so you must be able to mount it in the correct position.

      • Thanks mate. The alternative I'm looking at is the Optoma UHD50, which apparently receives good reviews and has lens shift to give me a bit of flexibility in installing it.

Cheapest I see it on OzB is $1800, but currently 2200+ around AU stores.

Any experience or views on this? and in your opinion is it worth double the price, or should I just pull the trigger on the TK800?

        • If you are building a dedicated home theatre room, I assume that you will be mounting the projector on the ceiling and thus can adjust and centre the projector pretty well. This means that lens shift should not be a critically important function to you.

I think I saw a you tube side by side comparison video of the UHD 50 against this projector or actually it may have been the less bright brother of the TK800 and it was clear that the UHD50 had better colour. With that said, I wouldn't pay $800 more for the difference.

If this is your first home theatre projector experience then go for it. You will be blown away. My only caveat would be to check to see if you see rainbow effect on DLP projectors. Apparently most people don't see it. Then of those that do, many don;t care. I'm trying to see if I can live with it but it does annoy me. Other family members can't see it.

What content will you be playing? 4K UHD blu-rays or rips or what?

    Carb’n copy?

  • Can anyone help me with a few questions please?
    1. How much better would this be than my trusty old w1080st ? Big difference ?

    1. Mainly using for ps4 pro 4k gaming. Ive heard this is not true 4k, what does that mean?

    2. Tk800m much better ? Seems that one has HDR and this doesnt?
      Cheers

      1. It means nothing. It runs 4k, you still need a strong graphic card to run games in for 4k. The quality is amazing.

2.tk800m is better but not much. It is a revision. If you could take the tk800m go for it. They have different lens however less zoom (1.2 Vs 1.1 tk800m).

I had this projector for 1 year. You can't go wrong with that.

  • Tk850 is due out soon. Much better and has lens shift but will be pricier. Costco have the tk800m for $1599

  • How well would this upscale the 1080i channels from the tv tuner? Or would i be better off getting an upscaling tv tuner?

  • How is this for ps4 pro? I heard it doesn cover all the hdr modes?
