OP's one works out to be cheaper per month but if you need it now then this is a better purchase. Luckly mine runs out in November.

Bought a 12 month off ebay for $40 last week, code via email within 24 hours BUT sill no email code after 6 days.
Not happy, could be a paypal claim i think.

people considering purchasing xbox live gold membership need to search previous posts on ozbargain about this product before buying. long story short, if you arent careful MS will keep charging you even after you think your membership expires. happened to me.
you really need to be wary of this ongoing subscription…. regardless of whether you give credit card details or not. because later in the future if ever decide to upgrade again, they'll try and charge you for all the years you havent 'paid up' and effectively hold your gamertag (and achievements) to ransom.
i wont neg this deal because it does appear 'cheap', but once bitten twice shy with Xbox Live…. trust me.

yes much safer to buy "prepaid" rather than "plan", its a bit like mobile phones.
Anyway my kids use it so i am "lucky" enough to buy it for them.Much better than retail shops.

For $49.99 I can buy 3 brand new games. Beats me how people having to pay Xbox live just to play online when it's free on the PS3 and PC.
