Dell Inspiron 14 3493 (14" FHD, i5-1035G1, MX230, 256GB/4GB) $699.20 Delivered @ Dell eBay

PDELLSAVE

Good price for a 10th Gen i5, dedicated GPU, and 14" 1080p screen in an almost a semi-ultrabook design at 1.66kg. With dedicated MX230 should be able to handle light esports titles well. Listed at $1098 on dell website.

Interesting that there's only 4GB of RAM when you look at the other specs, but according to Notebookcheck for similar i7 model, there is a second ram slot so might be something to confirm.

Other compromises for this price point are no backlit KB and likely no charging/power delivery through it's USB-C port, but at $699 a 10th gen i5/MX230, FHD screen & SSD is pretty impressive.

10th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.6 GHz)

NVIDIA® GeForce® MX230 with 2GB GDDR5 graphics memory

    1. USB Type C (available with discrete graphics only)
    • Sorry meant not sure if able to charge the laptop through its USB-C port / support Power Delivery.

  • How easy to add additional RAM?

What is the point of releasing a laptop with 4gb of ram these days? Wake up Dell!

    • +1

Obviously there is still a market for it. I imagine Dell's marketing department has a far better idea on these things than random posters and upvoters on OzB.

I've built systems with AT LEAST 8Gb for over 10 years now if not longer, but 4Gb is not THAT bad.

I have an old UX31A I carry around in my bag when I go on-site only (over 7 years old) with 4Gb and honestly guys, it STILL puts some other notebooks much younger to shame by quite a margin.

Yes, I believe 8Gb should be minimum but for a bit of Office, browsing, youtube etc. that kind of thing it's actually plenty.

Not saying saving a tiny amount of money in this area of the notebook construction is the right thing to do by Dell, but 4Gb can be totally serviceable.

      We're not running Vista here.

I thought all the 10th Gen Intels came with a integrated Intel® Wi-Fi 6 and Thunderbolt™ 3 technology. Not sure why they are still limiting the ports on these :( :( :(

    • +1

I think that's only on the Ice Lake (10nm) SKUs. Usually denoted by the G suffix.

Although this would be a case of artificial segmentation pw2002au

  • 1.66 kg semi "Ultrabook" design.

    • +1

Yeah i guess calling it a semi-ultrabook by me was a kind of a stretch with its poor build quality and weight, but I've seen heavier and clunkier 14" laptops so it s portbaility isnt the worst.

Only major downside is the 4gb ram. I would rather 128gb ssd with 8 gb ram.

  • Pretty damn good specs for the price, the ram is terrible but does appear to be upgradable with 2 slots accessible (1 occupied).

  • +1

Good specs, shame on 4g ram

This or HP Pavilion 13 (8th Gen i5 but 8gb ram)

    • It is $100 more?!?

      • +1

$20 more ($719) with code. Relevant deal here

        • Check the latest comments but there was cashback on it a few days ago bringing it (the HP) down below $600.

I have mine and it's is a really nice computer for the price. Screen is a bit dim if you are using it outside but otherwise a really nice and relatively 'premium' feeling budget laptop.

          • +2

@pepto: The 10% HP coupon is not listed on any of the cashback sites, so while it may track in the comments, it is very unlikely the cashback will be approved. I would've jumped on it if the coupon was also eligible for cashback. Great to see you are enjoying the HP! I'm currently tossing up between this, the HP, and the Lenovo E495.

Was comparing the specs as needed a new laptop. HP has a smaller screen and is more portable 13.3"/1.3kg compared to Dell 14"/1.66kg. Performance wise 10th gen will be slightly better than 8th gen, but MX230 GPU of Dell will have much better graphical performance than integrated UHD620 of HP for light gaming. HP also has a backlit Keyboard whereas Dell doesn't. While both of them don't have batteries to write home about (3 cell 42wh of Dell vs 2 cell 37.7wh of HP), think Dell will be better, Notebookcheck also notes (for the i7 model however):

In our real-world Wi-Fi test, the Inspiron 14 lasts 6:30 h. In this test, we simulate a web browsing load with the help of a script.

      • So that would make the HP almost 25% lighter, which is a fair bit when both laptops are not real heavy to begin with. I am sticking with the HP, I think it will have a more premium feel, no need to immediately run out and upgrade the RAM, and it has BL keyboard. Not using for gaming though, just office business use. This Dell still feels like a great deal though!

    • Looks like better build quality too.

  • I would try it in person first. Some of the inspirsons I have felt have just felt cheap in hand, keyboard didn't feel nice.

Warning this machine has only 100mbit ethernet, not gigabit ethernet..
But it appears it may have socket ram slots x2 and space for a sata drive and the M2 should be upgradable..

not USB C ports.. despite what the techs seem to say, when you look the reviews of the i7 version….

the ram on the HP unit is fixed at 8gb.. not upgradable..

  • This seems a good price for the spec. Notebookcheck case open shot shows 2 sodimm slots rather than 1 soldered 4gb, so that's good. Possibly also space for sata ssd as well as nvme?(Mrs one has WD nvme not toshiba). Cup and integrated looks good. Mx230 indicates throttling so not the best but for that money it looks a good uni/school machine. Shame on no usb c

Bios on both our Dell's was…interesting on second ssd install though, rather random fix but it's working now.

That screen resolution on a 15.6'' display in 2020 with that price?
Instant no regardless of the rest of the specs

  • The dedicated GPU gets a pretty poor rating when tested by Notebookcheck.

  • Has anyone ordered any dell on eBay? Have you received delivery dispatch email? I'm thinking to order it but it says it will get delivered by 14 Feb.. need it by 8feb.
